relia replied to the topic Writing the Climax in the forum General Writing Discussions 3 years, 4 months ago
I wrote an entire post before realizing that it all could be summed up into “I just gain momentum and go where the mood takes me because I am a pantser”. So not very helpful.
Actual stuff that helps me, though…
– Having photos and music as “reference” to the mood, location, etc. It also keeps me fully immersed in my…[Read more]

Lol, I went way over my time, but that’s a good thing!
One hour, 900 words, and half a chapter – great considering I didn’t think I would get any writing done today.
Favorite line: *WHAT WAS THE WORDNUMBERTHING I USED IN CHAPTER ONE AGH GO CHECK IT WHEN YOU’RE EDITING*
Real favorite line: He paused to muse a moment before murmuring, “Because w…[Read more]

relia replied to the topic Writing a series where the books aren't technically related…? in the forum General Writing Discussions 3 years, 4 months ago
Sounds super fun!
Hm. I haven’t read many books like this, but my instinct would be to say that the books should tie in to each other in some way. It could literally be a tiny cameo, or “Remember ___”, or whatever, but I think that even small connections like that make it much more satisfying as a reader.
Also, realistically, events in…[Read more]

For those who asked, my current WIP is like an adventure/fantasy/retelling-inspired-by-the-peloponnesian-war… yeah that sounds confusing, I need to come up with a better way to describe it lol.
And also thanks so much for telling me about yourselves, I may not be able to keep names straight but your writing seems so awesome, your hobbies and…[Read more]

First of all – that was really good! It was interesting and engaging, and I was hooked
why did you leave us on a cliffhanger I am so curious now lol!Ember is quite likeable. I agree with what some of the others have said, seeing her emotions a little more clearly would be nice, but overall, I thought she was a great character. She…[Read more]

relia replied to the topic Short Story Contest in the forum General Writing Discussions 3 years, 4 months ago
Yay, just submitted! The level of editing is awful since I’ve been gone all week 🙁 but I’m happy with the story itself, so cheers to that!
After the contest is over, all the entrants should consider posting a link to our stories on here, cuz I really wanna read everyone’s 😀

relia replied to the topic Self publishing or traditional? in the forum Publishing & Platform 3 years, 4 months ago
For me, traditional publishing has always been my end goal. This is mainly because…
The genres I write in are marketable (at least now lol). If I get my writing quality up to snuff, I should be able to get into trad pub, because people buy the sorts of books that I write. If I were writing, say, a conservative commentary on…[Read more]

@kathleenramm I love that story! So cute
I ship itHere’s one that related to my latest WIP:
Last year I was running laps, nothing unusual, normal fall day, and then I pass this group of kids.
They were probably… idk, 12, 13? But there was this one kid, super short with super messy strawberry blond hair, super freckled, who was being super…[Read more]

relia replied to the topic Real-Life Skills and Abilities? in the forum Mission, Calling & Ethics 3 years, 4 months ago
@typewriter77I think it’s totally fine to portray these elements (as long as they aren’t overly gory or whatever), and they are often very fun to read and write about. I’m actually writing a manuscript that does involve lockpicking, explosives, etc., so here’s what I’ve done. Ok. To be blunt, 99% readers simply won’t be able to do the things you…[Read more]

I’m currently about 1/4 of the way through writing a duology. I’ve plotted the first book extensively and the second one… kinda extensively? Not as much as the first one, but still pretty thoroughly.
But now that I’m nearing the end of draft one of book one, I can’t decide whether I should edit it at all before starting book two.
I strictly…[Read more]

relia replied to the topic In Search of Book Recommendations in the forum Book Discussions 3 years, 5 months ago
A series I recently finished, The Queen’s Thief by Megan Whalen Turner, was very interesting and amusing as a casual read – beautifully written, with wonderful characters and captivating plots. The author did decide to go woke in the last book, but most of the first ones are quite a good option for someone who wants a lighter fantasy read.

I’d love to read over it! I’ll try to write up a comment on it before the weekend! And like Jodi said, what exactly are you looking for critique on? Totally ok to literally just want any comments that come to our minds, but if you wanted historical accuracy, or more specific stuff, lemme know so I can read through with that in mind.…[Read more]

If you had the choice to write full time, and be fully supported in terms of cash flow, would you still choose to have (an)other job(s)? You could still write and be paid, but you would have to balance writing with non-writing work.
In my opinion, having personal experience with jobs has helped my writing become better, because I have the…[Read more]

Tolkien forevaaa… I actually got fairly far in learning Sindarin (elven language), and o_o it was tough… eventually gave up and just learned how to use the tengwar (elven scripty thing).
Out of those three… Ella Minnow Pea is a very amusing read, told through postal correspondence, where letters of the alphabet are progressively…[Read more]
