Jodi Maile replied to the topic Themes for mystery/thriller? in the forum Mystery 3 years, 5 months ago
It kind of depends on your characters, I think. A couple of the themes I’d be interested to see in a detective short story would be loving enemies, and trust. I feel like there are some unique ways those themes could be explored in a short story.

Jodi Maile replied to the topic To edit or not to edit… in the forum General Writing Discussions 3 years, 5 months ago
@relia I agree with Jenna and Lexi, you should probably edit the first book before you move on to the second one so that you have a solid foundation with the first book. Besides, sharing the first one with your family would be so fun and might even give you some useful feedback to incorporate or just keep in mind before you move on to the second book!

Jodi Maile replied to the topic WIP First 3 Chapters in the forum Novel Critique Requests 3 years, 5 months ago
Hey there! I’d love to read your first three chapters! It’s super brave of you to put your writing out there.
If you don’t mind my asking, is there anything specific that you’re looking for feedback on? Or are you trying to get a general impression of reader interest?
Anyway, I’m super excited to read your chapters!

Jodi Maile replied to the topic In Search of Book Recommendations in the forum Book Discussions 3 years, 5 months ago
Ah, I totally understand about college reading lists. And I would recommend The Book of Three by Lloyd Alexander but you’ve already read that series…
If you like historical fiction (and are okay with a legal thriller) I would suggest The Trials of Kit Shannon by James Scott Bell! It’s a series about a girl in 1903 who is trying to…[Read more]

Jodi Maile replied to the topic Writing and Jobs in the forum General Writing Discussions 3 years, 5 months ago
I would write and choose to have another job. I’m a firm believer that you won’t have many good experiences to write about if you don’t go and experience them in the first place. Having another job can introduce you to new tasks, new team dynamics, and new personalities to observe and learn from. Also, having another (interesting) job can…[Read more]

That’s so cool that you love ASL so much. I love Jo March too, and I loved the 2019 Little Women movie! Have you watched that version of the story?
The World War II era is so interesting! There are a lot of possibilities for writing in that era, which is what makes it such a popular historical fiction setting I suppose.
Welcome again! 🙂

Sure thing, and no worries! I totally understand why two endings would be difficult. I’m excited to see what you come up with in the end!

Jodi Maile replied to the topic Not sure if I should add an idea to my book in the forum Novel Idea Critiques 3 years, 5 months ago
Hello! It sounds like you’ve got a really interesting cast of characters. I’ve seen that it can be a bit challenging sometimes to add in a new sibling to an already well-established group of siblings, but with that being said, here’s a couple ideas for you to consider:
If you’re introducing this new character at the very end of the story…[Read more]

My favorite character from Pride & Prejudice would be Lizzie. I just really enjoy the character development she goes through from the beginning to the end of the story!
Oh thank you! Dystopian is challenging and I don’t do it much anymore but I still have some story ideas I’m interested in pursuing in that genre.
I’d love to be…[Read more]

Jodi Maile replied to the topic How to make your plot more exciting? in the forum Plotting 3 years, 6 months ago
This is the story of my life. I’ve struggled with this during so many stories. My best advice to renew your interest in the story would be to do any of these things:
Up the stakes
Let some characters encounter the consequences of their choices and have to navigate those consequences
Give the protagonist a specific amount of time…[Read more]

Hey there! I love a good mystery, and some of my favorite novels are legal thrillers XD
I have some ideas for you:
What if Jocelyn wasn’t the main suspect at first? What if there was another suspect who was the main suspect until they were killed, and then Jocelyn was framed for both deaths?
What if someone important/close…[Read more]

Jodi Maile replied to the topic Map Making. in the forum General Writing Discussions 3 years, 6 months ago
Oh no! Maps! Haha I am definitely not the best at making maps. What I usually do is draw them on a whiteboard, then take a picture of that rough drawing, then do my best to actually stay true to what I have drawn (since I sometimes switch locations around, so it gets difficult to just stick with one basic landmass until I’ve…[Read more]
