Keilah H. replied to the topic What come to you first? Plot or Characters? in the forum Topic of the Week 4 years, 6 months ago
@kathleenramm Depends. 90% of what I write is fanfictions*, so I already have several characters–and can just work out a plot and maybe a few more characters.
But for my original story, I got a plot and main character at almost the same time. Right now, I’m working more on creating characters and the world than I am the plot.
*The fanfiction…[Read more]

Keilah H. replied to the topic Fairytale Retellings in the forum Genre-Writing 4 years, 6 months ago
@madelyn Ooh! I haven’t read any fairytale retellings, but a few friends of mine told me about a show they watched which was basically about all the different fairytales mixed together. Like, the descendant of a character from one story was a character from another, etc.
I’ve read the original Rumpelstiltskin story (a few different versions,…[Read more]

So @karissa-chmil I don’t know if this qualifies as very short bits of our books, but here are some excerpts from a conversation between Braxton Redoak and Destiny . . . (I don’t have a last name for her.) They are both foxes.
(Spoken by Braxton)
“You have it wrong. Not ‘join our cause’. It’s no longer ours. It’s only yours.” He lifted up before…[Read more]

@abigail-m It’s very cool! I like the fact that the story’s about animals (rabbits in particular), yet there’s a bunch of battles and cool stuff in it. Also that it’s not super violent even though it’s about a war–the author wrote it for kids.

@abigail-m I don’t mind Fitz, but I can see why people might. I’m just happy that you’ve also heard of the KOTLC series…..I like it, and it was funny when they told Sophie to “make him look pretty in pink.”
Sam is awesome! He was a great character, that’s for sure. And he’s kind of forgotten in the corner most of the time, which makes it all…[Read more]

Okay, that makes sense.
So, do you have any ideas for your antagonist? What are your characters’ goals (especially the MC)? How does your antagonist oppose those goals?
I also love how you’re using some ideas from the Wingfeather Saga!
And I’m also SUPER curious what happened to their dad…

I hope you don’t mind if I pop in here!
1. Yes, I felt that way about Imogen from the Ascendance Series by Jennifer A. Nielson. She was nice, I guess, but I didn’t really connect with her. I think part of the problem was that she had like zero personality.
2. I’m going to go with Orion from my WIP. I would pick 2 or 4 for him. I absolutely hate…[Read more]

@karissa-chmil The Green Ember was great! And I totally get the “depends on the time in his character arc” thing. There are characters I only liked because I knew they’d turn good later. Otherwise I would’ve been like “That guy? Seriously?”

By a strong church I mean one where God can move unhindered, the people are unified as the body of Christ, and the pastor preaches the Word and the congregation backs him.
We do actively worship if that’s what you mean. We dance before the LORD in praise, but nothing such as Jewish ring dancing or stuff like that.
My favorite…[Read more]

Ah yes, Wentworth’s letter. That scene (besides Louisa’s fall) is probably one of my favorite in the book. And I usually don’t enjoy romance books…

Very interesting! I’d read it. I like human/humanoid characters with animal abilities, but to be honest I usually end up making them humans with cat ears or dragon wings or whatever.

@lydia-s It is great! I recognized Helmer instantly when I saw him, before his name was even mentioned, thanks to all the chatter about him on here. I think he’s cool. And i liked Ember’s End the best too! (I don’t know, I tend to like the last book in series…..)
