@thearcaneaxiom is it ok if Snake notices your character slithering up the river? (as I assume he–or it?–is doing right now) He doesn’t have to fight him, or even point it out to the others or anything, just notice that there’s something there.

I think it would be more helpful to think of this in terms of momentum than inertia. Momentum equates to the velocity of an object times it’s mass (which is equal to inertia).
