      @gracie-j Thanks for starting this thread! It’s been super helpful for me as well to read through the comments :))

      I’m echoing @devastate-lasting that handwriting, although time-consuming when you have to type it all out, is distraction free + portable + forces you to keep going and produce something. It’s also much more enjoyable than staring at a screen, and you feel very accomplished when you see pages and pages of your handwriting!

      – I also write around 500-600 words an hour

      – My rough drafts (unless handwritten) tend to be pretty neat in terms of prose, and lacking in plot + character development, because my writer’s self is unfortunately skewed that way. We all start somewhere though!

      – My novel’s first draft was part once-in-a-while, part Nano, so it took me ~5 months to complete. I tend to write less during school/work, though, and do it more during breaks.

      – What keeps me from editing… refusing to read what I’ve already written (hard to do though). Also setting my own goals on the Nano site has helped me focus on word count and not perfection, which definitely is helping me get much more done.

        Wow, I’m really thankful for this thread — I didn’t realize there were so many people out there doing similar things as me 😀 (although, really, as a Kapeefer I really should have seen it coming…)

        @writerlexi1216
        I guess I’ll just share a bit of my current WIP…my protagonist starts out in the “real world”, where she ends up getting sucked under the ocean for the purpose of saving someone she meets there. So in a relatively loose metaphor, the ocean is God and my protagonist is Christ, and the guy she saves is all of us lost souls.

        I wasn’t expecting it, but the Bible also appeared in the form of a cave full of glittering sea runes. I’m still hashing out how this is going to play into the story. I know a lot of people have already given you more specific advice and that what I’m doing is more of a loose metaphor than yours. But the way the Bible appeared in my story when I wasn’t originally planning for that to happen…I think that’s super cool, how our stories demonstrate our faith more than we realize.

        So there’s a less specific example for you (and the rest of us this thread is helping lol) 🙂 Good luck with whatever you do!

          @gracie-j For poetry, I recommend Across the Miles by Annie Douglass Lima!

          She’s an indie author that teaches at the main campus of the international school I attended. The poems range from fantasy to spiritual to life anecdotes, and they’re not just really good, but they also made poetry as an art form feel really accessible to me (as someone who barely writes it haha).

            @gracie-j Your tips to @devastate-lasting about kiss scenes were super helpful! I meant to ask about a kiss scene I plan to rewrite because I was in a rush (aka NaNoWriMo) and it basically turned into a lot of YA fluff. I think I know how to approach it better now, thanks 🙂

              @scoutfinch180 Hello there! I’m a high school graduate who’s in a gap year now, and as a result I have time to do National Novel Writing Month. My WIP is a Beauty and the Beast retelling and I’m very happy with it 🙂

              Also, I hope to be a speech therapist, so I expect to work a lot with speech impairments in the future, but I haven’t really been exposed to a whole lot of that yet. Why did you give your character a speech impairment?

              I’m not sure why the tag thing exists unfortunately :/ Don’t worry about it, it doesn’t affect anything I think.

              Welcome to the Kingdom!

                @lewilliams *returns solemn handshake* Hey there! Eeek, good luck with finals. I’m doing Nano this year primarily because my close friend decided to do it and we have a habit of getting each other excited about things 🙂 Secondarily (but probably a lot more important), this is probably the least busy November I will have in my entire life, since the pandemic’s kept me back from attending school.

                Also, I love that you used Eowyn’s quote in your signature!

                @devastate-lasting
                Yeahhh the word count xD I’ve managed to do it for two days already though, so hopefully I can keep it up. I think I’m fortunate this year (gap year because of COVID) to have quite a bit of time, but it’s still a hard pace and can be pretty exhausting. And thanks for pointing out that it’s okay to not make it! I can get quite obsessed over my creative endeavors, haha. Thanks so much!

                  Ah dear :/ Best of luck to you as you decide about that. You could always do a smaller goal, like Kathleen. Also, do you have any tips based on your past experience in Nano? Because I can really obsess over my work to a point where it’s unhealthy, and I want to avoid that.

                  @godlyfantasy12
                  Thanks! And good luck with your draft 🙂 I’m finishing my first draft for NaNo as well.

                  @kathleenramm
                  That’s super awesome! And it’s entirely possible that I’ll end up at around 25K at the end of the month, too, so let’s say I join you and see how far I can go 🙂

                    @merieshenanigans My retelling is of Beauty and the Beast! It’s contemporary fantasy, and I am actually handwriting it this time because that helps me get things done instead of stressing about what I’ve already written. So even though I still write slow, what I write stays there instead of getting deleted, lol.

                    Yes, being a TCK is always complicated, there’s no question about that xD

                    (If you go back to older posts, there should be a button called “edit” where you can edit that post!)

                      @merieshenanigans 你好! I’m Grace and welcome to the forum! I also enjoy fantasy, and my current WIP is a fairytale retelling 🙂

                      Your soon-to-be-named WIP sounds really cool. Can you tell me more of what it’s about?

                      Also I’m curious why you feel like you’re not an actual TCK… because I think it means different things for different people. Like if you wanted to get technical, I’m an American born of Taiwanese origins whose lived in Taiwan most of her life… and whose first language is English. So even if you don’t technically have a “third culture”, from the sounds of it TCK-dom is an identity you definitely embody. Celebrate it!!

                      *hands you a bubble tea* (which by the way, I also totally prefer to coffee) 😉

                      Finally and very importantly, I’d advise you to please go back to the part where you mention your parent’s occupations and delete the information about your mom. My family knows too many people who have been negatively affected by being found out, and I’m sure you know what the climate in China is like. Even though KP seems very safe it’s honestly not worth publicly saying anything about it on the Internet.

                        @leon-fleming This sounds like a great idea!

                        You’ve been tagging me in a lot of poetry-related things, haha… but I’m not sure I would consider myself a poet, except perhaps in the long-rambly free verse genre.

                        I think for this thread, I would caution that we check our hearts before writing, so that we’re genuinely glorifying God and not trying to write for the ‘audience’ that’s going to be reading whatever we come up with. But yeah, apart from that, let’s go for it!

                          @kathleenramm Yeah, I see what you mean about the incompetent hero being relatable. I think every person is fundamentally insecure about something, so having that played out in a book usually strikes a chord.

                          I like the forbidden love type (Romeo and Juliet, the song Rewrite the Stars, etc). I don’t know why exactly. It’s usually very feel-sy and gives the love something to overcome, and often it’s very bittersweet. Maybe it’s also related to people you love moving away and missing them a lot… something that I experience quite a bit in my own life.

                            @leon-fleming Yeah, after seeing a little bit about your WIPs I figured it was related to Tolkien somewhat. That’s amazing how you discovered a lot of existing things on your own!

                            Yeah, and people even recommend that speech therapists even study linguistics alongside to help inform the work that they do.

                                  @devastate-lasting Okay so it varies depending on the world. That’s cool!

                                  Yeah, I’ve studied at an American school all my life, so even though some would call me fluent in Chinese I am definitely not comfortable talking in it haha. When I move to America in the near future it’s going to be even worse…

                                  Yes, I think a lot of fictional drama really gets at your nerves because people refuse to be decent human beings and tell each other important stuff! But I guess she was destined for it, because in their former spirit lives she did promise to “repay him with tears”, which I find kind of sad.

                                  I’m actually not 100% sure I’m going to continue on this one; I might switch to a novella-sized Beauty and the Beast retelling in the name of familiarity (in a contemporary setting) and also length. But we will see about that.
