I think someone has already said this, but the best way I can think of to start a plot is to create some conflict. Make something go wrong and figure out how the characters can fix the problem. Except prose can be poetic (for the record, there is no such thing as a ‘prose poem’), so as with many simple things, it’s not easy. So essays, stories, novels, lots of plays, letters, if they’re the kind of thing that uses paragraphs, they’re prose.
