*sighs* Yes, I have.  Or rather, writing is something I’ve always wanted to do… it’s the type of writing I do that I’ve doubted.  And whether or not I ought to pursue writing as a career.  But writing is a part of who I am.  And whether I write in my journals or on my blog or get published and become famous, I think I’ll always write.

I write because I realize God’s given me a desire and a gift… and I don’t want to waste it.  I want to steward it well for his kingdom.

I write because I have been touched by the truth in powerful ways from non-fiction and fiction authors alike – Tolkien, Austen, Piper, Ferguson, Washer, MacArthur, etc.  Somehow, some way, God has used the words of faithful men and women to present the truth – his truth – in fresh, concise, convicting ways that struck deep in me, even changed my life.  I want to be faithful to use my words for the same, knowing that God in his faithfulness is able to use my wayward pen to exposit his truth.  As God has become more beautiful to me through others’ writing, so my prayer is that he would become more beautiful to others through my own.

I write because I love the challenge of crafting something beautiful, meaningful, humorous, sad, touching, etc. It’s an art, really, and I love it.

I write because I have a story to tell.  It’s mine, no one else’s exactly.  And yet it belongs to God, not to me – really, it’s mine to take care of, to share for his glory and the good of others.

I write because others need a voice, too, and I want their stories to be told.  My mom’s story, the story of the Hiroshima church, the stories of believers in hard places, the stories of the faithful who are not famous, but who have been used by God in beautiful, encouraging ways.  Honestly, my goal is to be able to write some of these stories, my mom’s in particular, and to touch people’s lives with the beauty and truth of God’s work in her life.

I checked out both of your articles, and what you shared is super helpful.  I’d never thought much before of the Pinterest idea, but I’ll definitely be trying to take that up… have a bit of work to do first, though, cleaning up my boards 😉

@e-p-writes There’s so much commentary here I’ll keep this short, but welcome to the kingdom 🙂 We’re so glad you’re here! (Also, the color blue is beautiful in all its shades, I agree).

@kathleenramm I’ve been meaning to tell you for a bit, but I read The Hunger Games and all books in the series this summer based on your suggestion… and they did not disappoint.  In the least 🙂 I have a new favorite author, and rereading (which I did in my non-existent spare time) definitely meant more to me than the first read (though that was quite the experience!).  Thank you so much for the recommendation 🙂

Also, I loved The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes… but maybe that was just me 😛

@kathleenramm The premise of my story is a little shaky right now, but it’s about a boy who gets thrown back in time (from the future to now) and who has to find his way home (at the most basic level).

@devastate-lasting I wish I had tips to give you… I’m just a baby sci-fi writer myself.  But something that’s helped me is to read a lot in the sci-fi genre.  And to not stress over getting all the science right, since it’s fiction.  But also to put enough work into the sci-fi aspect to make it seem fleshed out enough for the believability.  But yeah, I’m afraid there’s not much I can give you besides that 🙂

Most of my story ideas come from dreams that I have… super bizarre, but generally I daydream about them and add and add to the story until I realize, hey, this would actually make a pretty intriguing book.  Usually, I’d start writing without any planning… so I have a lot of unfinished first drafts :'(

Recently, my process has evolved a bit, especially as I’m working on a book I’m serious about getting published.  I basically had an idea (I don’t remember how this one came to be at the moment), thought a ton about it for weeks, talked with a person who had some helpful ideas, and gradually drew my plot from there. Right now, my life is more busy than I like, which leaves me with precious little time to write.  I’m taking my time with this novel and really milking the process of getting to know my characters, creating Pinterest boards, adding little by little to their pasts, their fears, their motivations, what’s influenced them, who they are at the core.  As I go through that process, the plot deepens and grows.  When summer comes, my hope is to get into outlining (something I’ve never done before, so…) and then writing while I can.  But yeah, I think it’s just a lot of thinking for me.  I have an imagination, though it’s not terribly good (I’m working on that, haha) and I use it while I’m passionate about my idea, as well as getting inspiration from Pinterest, and the whole process generally revolves around fleshing out and getting to know my characters.

That’s an example of long and rambly for you : )
