Keilah H. replied to the topic What come to you first? Plot or Characters? in the forum Topic of the Week 4 years ago
@kathleenramm Depends. 90% of what I write is fanfictions*, so I already have several characters–and can just work out a plot and maybe a few more characters.
But for my original story, I got a plot and main character at almost the same time. Right now, I’m working more on creating characters and the world than I am the plot.
*The fanfiction…[Read more]

In my most recent story idea, I still don’t have a plot.😅 But I do have a bunch of really cool characters, and an awesome world. So yeah. Just need a plot now.
I think in most my stories the characters come first for me … because the way I write, often the characters are the plot. Or, more accurately, while there may be ext…[Read more]

Can we get this up and running again with brand new lines from characters? I still don’t really have many….but maybe we can expand this to be lines of not just dialogue but just very short bits of our books?

I’d have to say my Mom is the biggest influence on my writing. She’s a writer herself, and even just knowing that she was working on her story inspired me to do it.
I wrote a lot of early stories for my aunt, uncle, and two cousins; they are absolutely the most encouraging people you’ll ever meet (especially my aunt), and I wrote…[Read more]

He’s really good at writing more mature stories that I would call YA without forcing them to be anything in particular.
I don’t remember how many heroes he made personally, however, I do remember that he was the one who made Spider-Man. Spider-Man was the superhero that I watched as a kid. (Sadly, I watched a really old version…[Read more]

Exactly! Long, deep conversations are my favorite, but it’s often hard to find people to have them with (or specific topics for discussion, lol). God has really blessed me with the friends I can have those conversations with, whether those discussions happen often or only on occasion.

That’s a great point. We as readers can much more relate to the feeling of pain rather than a specific type of injury. Unless it’s like twisting your ankle or something like that lol.
I think the point is to not explain something that people already understand.
But yeah, stories that take injuries seriously are way more intense and…

I finally started reading the Green Ember series and I love it! It’s so cool how the writer did the whole story with wolves and eagles (rabbit predators) as villains and rabbits as heroes. And the lore behind it and backstory–all so cool! I’m on the third book right now. What did you think of it? Who’s your favorite character? I honestly love a…[Read more]

ooh, I could talk about this for DAYS
I quite like shy, sensitive male characters who do a lot of introspecting. Bonus points if they’re traumatized/have a tragic past. Dark mysterious characters who push people away because they’re afraid of hurting them get me every time. Oh, and the smooth,…[Read more]

@kathleenramm Hmmm most recently probably comes from my English professor. Probably: “If there’s an upper word count limit then it means that this assignment can be done very well and with quality in this word count or under.” I guess overall, length isn’t everything.
Oh, and there was talk about interpolation and sensory description and…[Read more]

I definitely think that given names have more expectations attached to them because people get to know you, and your family, and that results in… expectations. (Unsurprisingly.) And pen names make it much easier to dodge those expectations, I suppose. They also have the advantage of allowing you to live a sort of secret life if…[Read more]
