btw it is fantasy and is not an allegory any more than Lord of the Rings is. I instead strongly incorporate lessons like loyalty, honesty, and forgiveness in my stories. This guy sounds fascinating!  His backstory is awesome, and he sounds like a genuine character.  For likeability, you could:

1)  Give the MC and Ridley something in common (a hobby, a genre of music, a favorite food, etc)
