If you having a hard time reading the books, I recommend finding them in audiobook form. Then you don’t have to push yourself (Which could lead to you not liking the series even more).

What I like about the first book?
- The writing style. It reminded me of classics; something I can’t find enough of.
- The antics. Sure some of the cliches got to me, but they were well written ones. Besides, a cliche is only an overused good tactic.
- The characters. Their troubles were relatable and not overdone. Some of Janner’s mistakes…

@devastate-lasting
True. Where do all those Eastern Dragons be tho?True. True. I actually liked the three introductions when I first read it too. I thought it was a deliberate poke at all the fantasy clichés. I hoped the story would be a somewhat fun yet heartfelt parody of the common fantasy stories. However, the rest of…[Read more]

Not-So-Secret Secret Assassin replied to the topic How do I make a non-cliche escape scene? in the forum Plotting 4 years, 10 months ago
I have written quite a few escape scenes in my lifetime (the very nature of my stories require it to be so), and cliche escape scenes are one of my pet peeves in stories, so I think that I have a few tips that I can help you with.
First, what constitutes a “bad escape scene”?
1. It’s super easy, and it makes the villain look weak
2. It’s…[Read more] -

@faith-q Here’s my ideas:
Like everyone else said, there’s a difference between obeying your ruler completely and respecting them as the Bible says.
If a leader tells you to steal or murder, will you? It goes against God’s law and is therefore wrong, no matter what earthly rulers may think or say. Think of Christians under Muslim or Communist…[Read more]

Wow, everyone has such good, solid answers. All I can think of probably doesn’t apply to your story, so I’ll be brief.
There are christians and missionaries in Islamic countries where all other religions are illegal.
Are those christians rebelling? In a sense yes.
Are they actively overthrowing those governments? Not exactly.
Are they wrong?…[Read more]

And actually, yes. There is a dark past to Podo Helmer for the Wingfeather kids to uncover–but it doesn’t come into play until the second book. You have to keep reading, even if it was the most boring thing you’ve ever read. Finish it, and THEN you can say “This is trash!” or “Hey, I kinda like this” or “I love it.”

And there is one other thing. It was a Christian series, with good dragons. I love the idea of dragons, but since the dragon is almost always the antagonist in European folktales (and is associated with evil in other places–just look at Revelation) I thought Christian writers didn’t like using dragons as good characters or protagonists. But in…[Read more]

@not-so-secret-secret-assassin At first, I was like, “How DARE you call it ‘trash!’ It’s a good series!” Personally, this series is one of the only Christian fiction stories I’ve read, and to me it’s pretty good. But I get what you said with the first book–if you ‘re an adult (which I’m assuming you are for some reason) the first book seems kinda…[Read more]

First book. You either enjoy or you don’t. I liked the writing style, the world, and the characters, but I will admit the plot could have been stronger. (Although I personally enjoyed it.)
Second book. Developes the character flaws we got a glimpse of in the end of the first book. Stepping stone to the next books yes, but this is where the story…[Read more]

Exactly. Sometimes I want to smash the computer.
Ok, I will rephrase that. Thank you! (I enjoyed writing that part. The epilogue is vaguely based off of the book And God Was There.)
Oh good! I love writing transliterated…[Read more]

you didn’t have to cross the “better than a comedian” part out. I’ll take that compliment proudly.
Thanks for the story, the yoda quote, and tips. But honestly, time isn’t my problem. I have several hours of free time a day where I just lay down and stare up at the sky and contemplate my life and daydream about what could have…[Read more]

@devastate-lasting Your silence speaks volumes. You HAVE read it before, Linyang. You just chose to give yourself amnesia so you didn’t have to continue having nightmares about it. Smart choice. Any tips for self induced amnesia? Oh yeah, you wouldn’t remember.
And thanks for your blessing. I’ll need it.

I don’t like anime. It’s too nerdy for me. I’m not a cringe weeb. I’ve moved on to greater things.
That said, I only like Attack on Titan.
And maybe Full Metal Alchemist.
And To Your Eternity.
And Erased.
And Death Note.
And The Promised Neverland.
And Your Lie In April.
And Hunter X Hunter.
But other than that, there definitely isn’t any…[Read more]
