SeekJustice replied to the topic What's your favorite type of villain? in the forum Topic of the Week 3 years, 5 months ago
I must say that I go against the grain and like the powerful villains who don’t have sympathetic backstories and are just evil. Jadis is by far one of my favourite villains because she gives me such chills, particularly in The Magician’s Nephew in the city of Charn. Villains like Mother Gothel from Tangled who are powerful and com…[Read more]

valtmy replied to the topic Themes for mystery/thriller? in the forum Mystery 3 years, 5 months ago
I think the right theme would emerge once you have a general idea of the characters and how the plot should go. For a short story, perhaps you might want to avoid some of the bigger themes which would require an entire novel to do justice (pun intended).
Since your story is to be a mystery/thriller, one idea that came to me is to…[Read more]

Oh yes I love it when the antagonist and protagonist mirror each other thematically.
I like unexpected villains (e.g. killer being a child or sweet old lady). I’m also fascinated by villains that have unique and interesting motivations because the power-hungry, petty-jealous-rivalry, s…[Read more]

@kathleenramm Oo, foils! Gotta love those.
Mine is probably the villain who knows what he’s doing is wrong but does it anyway either for a higher reason or to prove a point. Basically the villain who has a conscience but has higher ideals. Not sure how to phrase it quite right. You don’t see it often.
Also, I like the secondary villain who…[Read more]

@faith-q I can do the alphabet in ASL as well, since it’s very occasionally used over here, but that’s about it! And ASL people sign so fast! Auslan is much slower than ASL is 😀 I also very much relate to your feelings on sign language. I adore it as well! I recently spent a whole weekend at a “voice off” event and it was blissful, I loved it and…[Read more]

Aw thank you so much! I’m so glad you liked it. That story is probably my favourite work out of everything I’ve written. I actually entered it in a short story competition several years ago and ended up winning the overall prize. It was published in an anthology, but to be honest I’m not sure what copyright laws apply now so I…[Read more]

Linyang Zhang replied to the topic Self publishing or traditional? in the forum Publishing & Platform 3 years, 5 months ago
@joy-caroline I’ve also always wanted to go the traditional route. And right now I still do, although I’m doing a variety of other things. I’ve been working on trying to make an online presence on some web serial platforms, and this summer I also want to experiment with Kindle Direct Publishing. All this, of course, is so that I can hopefully get…[Read more]

@abigail-m Very much looking for an opportunity every chance I get. It’s just too good to pass up.
@lewilliams I’m with Kathleen on villainous ice cream trucks. You should definitely include it in a story. Like, where do ice cream trucks even come from? Are they even stoppable?
@relia Ah, yes, I’ve done this myself several times. It’s awesome,…[Read more]

Linyang Zhang replied to the topic Real-Life Skills and Abilities? in the forum Mission, Calling & Ethics 3 years, 5 months ago
@typewriter77 From the posts I’ve seen about how to pick locks or shoplift at the beginning whoever wrote it always puts a huge disclaimer that these tips are for writing purposes only and not for in real life.
I myself am usually too lazy to go into detail about anything, lest I mess any details up, or, perhaps, accidentally teach someone how to…[Read more]

Linyang Zhang replied to the topic Themes for mystery/thriller? in the forum Mystery 3 years, 5 months ago
@typewriter77 A lot of those themes seem to work, in my opinion! God’s Justice vs Man’s Justice I’m not sure could be written in just a short story…maybe a longer work. Courage, trust, and Truth vs Deception could be in any work, I think, and Sin & Salvation as well as Loving Enemies both propose great story premises.
Good luck!

Linyang Zhang replied to the topic Introduction in the forum Start HERE 3 years, 5 months ago
@typewriter77 Hmm…I would say it is possible, since a lot of anime and manga are based off of Japanese light novels.
Both of those projects sound awesome! I’d love to hear more about them in the future!
I think I’ve read the first book of the Ascendance series. It was pretty good. And I’ve yet to watch either of those movies, but I should p…[Read more]

I’m a big believer in Doing Whatever Works For You, however, I’m personally going to go against the grain here and say that for me personally editing a duology together is what works better for me. I’ve written a duology and I’m currently in the process of editing it (or I’m pretending to edit it rather), and for me the best way to do it…[Read more]

@relia I’m waiting till I finish most of my series to edit…or maybe all of it (probably because I hate editing) but also in future books I might decide to change things that happen in previous books so when I go back to rewrite or whatever I can change accordingly. Also because my writing improves the more I write.

Jenna Terese replied to the topic To edit or not to edit… in the forum General Writing Discussions 3 years, 5 months ago
I’d recommend editing it before you move on to book two, because sometimes with editing things change around with the plot and characters and it’d be easier to have those things at least somewhat set in stone before moving on to the next book than to have to do even more editing with the second book. It may have been confusing the way I…[Read more]

@kathleenramm It was one of those homeschool minivans, which is lowkey funny to me. That would make a great device, as well as a way to introduce a character.
