Hmmmmm. . . a brother-to-brother relationship (or just a close friendship that makes it feel like brother-to-brother) is definitely up there. Not sure exactly why. . .
I also love the master/apprentice-ish relationship (or noble and servant, or mentor and mentee, or whatever. . .) just because having on character clearly in…[Read more]

How many sibling duos have I written? Oh boy, here we go …
*rubs hands together while chuckling*
So, I have a pair of fraternal twins in my current WIP, a girl and boy. (The boy is one of my main POVs.) Then I also have a pair of side characters who are brothers — I think they’re some of my favourite to write. Then my other main…[Read more]

@kathleenramm I like master/servant relationships, maybe like young lady and her butler, or something similar. Or I like the idiotic duo who share one brain cell. That’s just really fun to see.

I love sibling relationships — I’m particularly fond of brother-brother relationships. Which is kinda funny, seeing as how I’m a girl.😂 I did have to two brothers, though, so it’s not like I have no experience in seeing this relationship play out. I also know a lot of brother-brother pairs in my friend group.
But yeah, I really…[Read more]

Mallory O'Bier replied to the topic Does writing energize or exhaust you? Or both? in the forum Topic of the Week 2 years, 8 months ago
Writing energizes me and fills me with joy. I’m truly happiest when writing. I can get tired while writing, but it doesn’t usually exhaust me. It’s only really exhausting if the words or inspiration or whatever I need just isn’t flowing as it should. :/
But if I’ve turned my light off and I get a sudden spark of an idea… I may turn the light…[Read more]

@kathleenramm Hmm unless you count the time I couldn’t fall asleep from like midnight to two in the morning because I kept getting writing ideas to jot down haha. That was pretty energizing.

If the word are cooperative and characters are caught in the midst of some dilemma or moment of humor, then I think I get excited. However, most of the time I’m kinda neither. It usually settles me into a quiet bit of daydreaming/brainstorming. Like I said, if everything’s working, then I can get excited and want someone to read…[Read more]

@kathleenramm Boi, your profile picture sure looks familiar, although a tad bluer haha.
I think writing will always drain me. I don’t think I’ve ever walked away from writing without feeling a little more tired than before. Unless I’m in the middle of a load of homework and I needed to write a paragraph or something as a pick-me-up or a…[Read more]

Okay, y’all, so I recently finished my YA fantasy novel.
*cues the high-pitched screams*
But my next project is a middle-grade novel featuring a 12-year-old MC who gets herself into all sorts of scrapes.
The problem is, I’m not naturally a humorous writer. It’s something I’m trying to work on in this story, true, but a very not funny writer…[Read more]

Elishavet Elroi replied to the topic What come to you first? Plot or Characters? in the forum Topic of the Week 2 years, 9 months ago
Characters.
Usually I think of a character in a setting, with a bit of their backstory. That backstory and setting then point to what may happen/ what the plot will be.
However, they don’t always communicate perfectly, so I often end up with only a vauge idea about what the plot actually is.
I used to say that all my books were…[Read more]

The plot usually comes to me first, although it is shortly followed by characters. For my current WIP, the plot kind of came at the same time as the characters since I had always wanted to write a story with triplets who possessed special talents. My plot ideas, however, are what made me actually start writing the story. In general,…[Read more]

Hello, one and all! For those of you who are newer, we used to have some topics called “Writer’s Corner” or something like that, but I’m far too lazy to search for the previous ones or consult how many of these we have been through, so we can just start a new one.
This thread is just a place for off-topic chats, where we can talk about our day or…[Read more]

Linyang Zhang replied to the topic What come to you first? Plot or Characters? in the forum Topic of the Week 2 years, 9 months ago
@kathleenramm I’d say both. Sometimes I have names and character ideas and I want to flesh out a plot around them; other times I have a plot idea and I make up quick characters to fill in the blanks. But if I had to choose one, it’s most likely characters first.

Keilah H. replied to the topic What come to you first? Plot or Characters? in the forum Topic of the Week 2 years, 9 months ago
@kathleenramm Depends. 90% of what I write is fanfictions*, so I already have several characters–and can just work out a plot and maybe a few more characters.
But for my original story, I got a plot and main character at almost the same time. Right now, I’m working more on creating characters and the world than I am the plot.
*The fanfiction…[Read more]

In my most recent story idea, I still don’t have a plot.😅 But I do have a bunch of really cool characters, and an awesome world. So yeah. Just need a plot now.
I think in most my stories the characters come first for me … because the way I write, often the characters are the plot. Or, more accurately, while there may be ext…[Read more]
