Linyang Zhang replied to the topic What aspect of writing have you grown most with as a writer? in the forum Topic of the Week 3 years ago
@kathleenramm I think for me it was probably plot and themes. I remember when I first started writing I didn’t really know what themes I wanted to write about, how to incorporate them, or if I even wanted a theme. Now I think that everything I write has multiple themes woven throughout, though I can’t quite tell what they are. (This is why I…[Read more]

That sounds really interesting! Something I would check out of the library. I love the Rouge One idea honestly. It doesn’t sound cliché at all. I also love all the internal conflict being presented in such a short synopsis. It attaches me to the story.
Faith does bring up a lot of good points, however. Why would a rebel group want to help her?…[Read more]

Ranting about my new novel idea to myself in the depths of my soul. Will I share anything more than a few cryptic words? No.

Linyang Zhang replied to the topic What’s an unexpected place you got a story idea from? in the forum Topic of the Week 3 years, 1 month ago
@kathleenramm Plenty of places that I don’t even remember. Probably something similar to your waffle house experience. If I remember I’ll let you know.

Jenna Terese replied to the topic Planning out a trilogy! in the forum General Writing Discussions 3 years, 1 month ago
That’s so exciting! 😀 I’d definitely recommend figuring out how you want the whole series to end. Ask yourself, at the end of the last book, what do things look like? Where are the characters? What has been resolved? What hasn’t? In regards to plot and character arcs, think of the series as a whole one big character arc, or one big…[Read more]

Linyang Zhang replied to the topic What's something you thought was necessary in writing, but actually wasn't? in the forum Topic of the Week 3 years, 1 month ago
@kathleenramm Oh, almost everything. That you had to follow prose conventions taught in school or plot outlines that followed a specific formula, that your character had to go through a very specific and obvious development, that you had to write something that followed all of these things with a reasonable and expected ending…
None of those…[Read more]

RainyEmily replied to the topic What's your biggest strength and weakness as a writer? in the forum Topic of the Week 3 years, 1 month ago
The plot itself is still being developed but this should give you an idea of the story concept:
Your name is special. It is who you are, giving you identity and individuality. It also has a meaning. It was often said that children live up to the meaning of their name. But what if it went beyond that? What if your name was the source…

Linyang Zhang replied to the topic What's your biggest strength and weakness as a writer? in the forum Topic of the Week 3 years, 1 month ago
@kathleenramm I pretty much just practiced writing for a while, then I took a couple of courses on style and things, and then I just wrote a ton until sometime last year when I felt like my style is more like what it is now. And it’s still developing, though right now I’m finally finding it satisfactory.

RainyEmily replied to the topic What's your biggest strength and weakness as a writer? in the forum Topic of the Week 3 years, 1 month ago
My weakness is that it takes me a long time to become confident in a project I’m working on which leads to me having a hard time being consistent since I lose motivation. I’m learning to overcome it though.
My strength…I’d say I have a lot of originality. My imagination drags up some very unique ideas and I just want to write them all down. My…[Read more]

@kathleenramm My biggest weakness is probably editing. Editing is the thing I’ve spent least time on. It always makes me feel like I’ve never edited enough lol.
Biggest strength? At this point, probably my prose. That’s the only thing I get consistently complimented on.

@kathleenramm I’m not sure if I’ve ever read something and thought, “That was strange.” But if I had to choose one I would choose Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? I was pretty confused throughout it, haha. I like it ok, but definitely not my favorite. Fahrenheit 451 all the way. Also, the way I read the synopsis and the way I thought that t…[Read more]

Linyang Zhang replied to the topic How to know if your book should be a standalone or series? in the forum General Writing Discussions 3 years, 1 month ago
Me: I want to write a five part series. Let me come up with enough plot to fill it.
Also me: This plot idea feels like it’s gonna be a three part series.
That’s basically it haha. Depends on how much plot idea you have.
