Sniper
She asked if my scales gave me powers, then trailed off tryin’ to pronounce my species’ name.
My tail flicked worriedly as I realized I’d made her start snifflin’. Gabriel tried his best to comfort her.
I kneeled down on the other side of her and curled my tail close to my legs, makin’ myself smaller and hopefully less threatenin’. “My scales don’t give me powers, sadly.” I explained. “Actually, come to think of it, I was the only one on my planet without any powers. Bu that ‘ad nothin’ to do with my scales.”
I reached out and slashed two circles into the ground with one claw, runnin’ a line through one of them like the ring around a planet and drawin’ shapes inside to symbolize landmasses. “There’s two large planets in my home solar system. I was born on Staten but grew up on Australis.” I pointed to the smaller circle, then the larger one. “The Argonites on Staten were tall and thin, like me. They’re…they’re gone now.”
Not sure why I hesitated. It’s not like any of the Statenians actually cared about me. Not even my own parents.
“The ones on Australis, though, they’re bigger, stronger. ‘Built like a brick house*’ as we say over there. Not like me at all. …You could say they ‘ave powers, sorta.”
Gabriel and Lucy seemed more interested in this than Mel was, admittedly.
I nodded to Huntress. “Now, , if ya really wanna see powers, you should ask her to show ya what her kind does. She’s a Changeling. They can change color like chameleons.”
*a legit expression from his country, I looked up some slang he could use. Interestingly in all the sources I read it was tempered with what would be considered profanity here in the States; Australians are apparently a lot more lenient about what constitutes a swear than we Americans are. Obviously I removed that bit for the sake of KP roleplaying being mostly PG and the fact that he’s addressing a child, but besides that this is exactly the kinda thing he’d say.

May 15, 2026 at 3:50 pm #212047@keilah-h I’m so sorry she’s not paying attention. I love reading the backstory/worldbuilding stuff, but Mel is a very tired and overwhelmed neurodivergent seven year old who doesn’t know what to do atm. She would find it so cool any other time. @whalekeeper @rae I promise I’m not trying to write a dramatic scene, lol. She’s just a tired kid.
Mel
Mel looked up at Gabriel, surprised. She took the handkerchief and held it, unsure what it was or what to do with it. The crocodile man crouched down and tried his best to answer her question. He might have been trying to distract her, but it didn’t work.
“Now, , if ya really wanna see powers, you should ask her to show ya what her kind does. She’s a Changeling. They can change color like chameleons.”
Mel looked up at the nice lady. All she could say was, “…Oh.” And that’s when the tears came. She wiped at them furiously, but they came too fast. What was happening? She didn’t feel sad.
All the attention was on her now, and without any crow feathers nearby to hide in, she buried her face in her hands. The worried adults tried to ask her what was wrong, but her only response was a muffled “I don’t know,” on repeat between hiccups. This is the most embarrassing moment of my life, she thought, and wished that the ground would eat her again.

May 15, 2026 at 4:43 pm #212049Huntress
Mel hid her face in her hands, looking very stressed.
Sniper appeared tense, as if he thought it was his fault she were upset. He stood up and backed away as Gabriel asked Mel what was wrong, leaping up to sit on a rock and watch where he couldn’t interfere.
I sat down next to him. “I don’t think she’s upset cause of you, Snipes.” I reassured him, placing my hand over his. “I’m pretty sure she’s probably just freaked out from the surroundings. I mean, look at how small the poor kid is. She should be at home with her parents or playing in a forest somewhere with friends from school or something, not…..here.”
“Ya think?” he hissed, looking me in the eye. “None of us should be ‘ere, Jaylen.” He snarled. “If we see any more of those little labyrinth creatures again I’ll take a gun and blow their heads off for keepin’ us stuck in this blasted maze.”

Gabriel
He didn’t show it on his face, but Gabriel was both stumped and upset that he couldn’t figure out what was bothering Mel. Were all little girls so confusing? How can you break down and not know why? Last time Lucy seemed emotionally overwhelmed she wanted to be alone, but then she got taken away. He couldn’t leave her to get lost, but he stood and stepped back. “Let me know if you need something, okay? I’ll try to help as I can.” He glanced at Lucy, checking to make sure she wasn’t taken again.

Lucy sometimes found herself making fists, pinching herself, breathing quickly, or screaming – without any control. Without knowing why. As if feelings blew through her body or pounded on her skull just because they could.
As she saw Mel trying not to cry, something clicked. Her parents sometimes took her aside to hold her. If that worked for Lucy, it might work for Mel.
She dropped her things, walked past the grown-ups, and put her arms around the smaller girl.
“You all have to close your eyes,” Lucy commanded, trying to keep her stutter at bay and speak clearly. She glared at each other person, one after the other. “Shhh.“

I’m glad he didn’t disappoint XD.
The poor boi, he’s trying. He’s trying so hard, but he’d feel more comfortable in the middle of a knitting group than here lol.

I’m thinking about adding a character who loves to knit, so this amuses me all the more. He might factually have the option to join a knitting group instead

May 15, 2026 at 8:33 pm #212062Do any of your characters still have guns? Just curious to know how many guns they carry on their person at all times

May 15, 2026 at 10:11 pm #212065It’s probably a good thing that Rallascant doesn’t actually know what guns are

May 15, 2026 at 11:20 pm #212068Mel
Mel stopped trying to hold it in and cried quietly into Lucy’s shoulder. She couldn’t tell if the grown-ups had obeyed Lucy’s command to close their eyes, but she felt comforted by the idea. Lucy squeezed a bit tighter. This was better than stinky crow feathers.
After a couple minutes which felt much longer, her sobs turned into long, shaky breaths. Then those turned into normal breathing with the occasional loud sniffle. She pulled away from the hug and wiped her face, finally realizing what the handkerchief was for. “I’m s-sorry. Now your shirt’s wet.”

May 15, 2026 at 11:33 pm #212069Not that we need this at the moment, but here’s some possible future conflict ideas because I’m in a brainstormy mood.
- The group finds Mel’s door back home and they realize it won’t help anyone else get home except her (Mel and Lucy still think they’re from the same world)
- The group finds the giant’s garden
- The basilisk goes hunting again
- The group looks for food
- The group have to fight some creature for an orb
- Rallascant
- A thunderstorm starts
- Doppelgängers of the characters made out of mist
- A flower garden that has some kind of magical effect on the characters’ minds when they smell the flowers (like the poppy field in the wizard of oz)
- gnomes?
