I mulled over this. Two children in the labyrinth. This was starting to get worrying.
The new girl–clearly also human, or at least a human-dominant hybrid like my brother or the Mann twins–left Sniper’s side and hugged the crow, appearing shy. Or, y’know, scared of an Argonite and Ornithiform.
Lucy picked up some rocks and started hitting them together absentmindedly. I would’ve done that too if i were….nine? Ten? I couldn’t her exact age but she was definitely under twelve.
I came up to the new kid. “Hey there….Mel? That’s your name, right? We’re not gonna hurt you. Well, okay, We’re not going to try to hurt you on purpose. If we do it’ll be by accident. But that’s not gonna happen.”
Why did I say that? That sounded kinda stupid.
It did get her to take notice and pay attention to me.
The crow squawked and tried to peck at my hat. I jumped out of pecking distance. “Hey! Stop that!”

Mel smiled as she gently grabbed the crow’s beak and pushed him back. He must be hungry, she thought. Then she faced the woman who had approached her and stuck out her bruised chin, trying to look tough.
“I’m not scared.”
Tired? Overwhelmed? Maybe. Confused? Sure. But scared? Never.
Runt tried to peck at Mel’s pocket again and she finally relented, fishing out a scone and feeding it to him.
“This is Runt,” she informed the woman. “He’s not scared either.”

“I’m not scared.” Mel tried her best to look tough. She reminded me a tiny bit of me at that age.
She fed the giant bird a pastry she had in her pocket. “This is Runt. He’s not scared either.”
He cawed softly and pecked at the pastry.
Kind of impressive that a girl that young was able to tame a bird that large. A little odd for him to be named Runt, though….he was huge.
Soldier screeched as Runt poked at him again. “I think he thinks you’re one of his kind, Soldier!” I called to him. I turned to Mel and grinned. “Maybe if he stopped getting close he wouldn’t get pecked, don’t you think?”

“Yeah.” Mel giggled, watching Runt continue to follow him around curiously. Despite the fright he had given her in the sky, she liked the bird man. He was silly. As she watched though, her smile slowly faded back into a look of confusion. She looked up the nice lady.
“What, um… Who are you guys?”

Mell giggled at Soldier as he tried to avoid Runt.
She then turned to me. “What, um… Who are you guys?”
I wasn’t exactly sure how to tell her what we were without freaking her out. “We’re, from, uh…a a galaxy really far from here.” I finally explained, trying to make it decently easy to understand. “We were fighting in a war. That’s why we all have red clothes. The bad guys had blue ones, so we had to be different from them of course.”
I pointed to Soldier again. “There are lots more bird people where I come from. They’re called Ornithiforms. Not all of them are that loud though.”
“Really?” She looked up at me with curious eyes.
“But if you really want to know something cool, ask Sniper about his kind. He’s special. He’s an Argonite, and the only one left from his planet.” I told her. “Now, there are a lot of Argonites on the other planets, but he’s different from all of them. See those scales on his arm? He’s the only one that has those.”
“What’s this about my scales?” Sniper approached us, his tail winding back and forth as he walked.
I have more of this interaction in mind, but I’ll let Mel react to this new information before continuing.

“Oh, okay…You don’t look like aliens…” Mel pulled her coat tighter around herself. She glanced over at Lucy just as Lucy and the other man glanced back at her.
She felt weird. She wished people would stop looking at her. But she also wanted a hug. Or a way back to her duck pond. Or a warmer coat. Or a cheese stick. She didn’t know.
She stared down at her boots. “Do you, um…” Weirdly, the words started to catch in her throat. And why were her eyes stinging? “Do your special scales give you special powers? Cuz you’re the last Ara… Argro… Ar…” She trailed off. Still looking at her feet, she sniffed and wiped her nose on her sleeve.

He didn’t know what to think of Mel, he was never around children very often before. He still couldn’t figure out Lucy most the time, what about Mel? Was she like Lucy? What would he do with two rash girls with little self-preservation skills? He hoped she wouldn’t wander off, or try to play catch with monsters. She already had befriended a crow, which, in Gabriel’s mind, showed she has a soft place for animals that could potentially be dangerous. He had no intention on leaving her to the labyrinth, but he also couldn’t help thinking about the trouble this new addition could cause.
He was pulled from his thoughts when he noticed her crying. All his thoughts about how much trouble it might be watching over her vanished. He approached her carefully, kneeling in front of her. His mask swung around his neck on its scarlet ribbon. “Hey, hey it’s okay.” He dug into his bag, looking for a handkerchief he had grabbed at the mansion. He handed it to her. “I’m Gabriel, Lucy’s…” He paused. What was he to Lucy? A Friend? He considered her one, he thought, but what if she didn’t return it? Would it be right to say so? “Protector,” he defaulted. “You alright? Want to share what’s wrong?”
In reality, Gabriel probably considers Lucy as a daughter or a little sister, but since he’s never had either and isn’t very familiar with family relationships, he hasn’t yet labeled his feelings correctly.
