As the adults checked on sleepy Mel, Lucy had an idea. She wandered over to her desk – a small, ash-colored piece of furniture with all of her papers and her typewriter stacked on the side. It was much neater in comparison with the mess underneath it.
A part of her wanted to sit down and do her homework; do something familiar. If only she could bring her typewriter with her. And her bed, and her clothes, and everything.
Was all this stuff real, or was it an exact copy of the real thing? Was it all going to disappear? It was confusing, for sure.
She dug around in a drawer and found what she wanted. A pile of special pins. They had little metal pieces on them, fastened together to look like toy crickets. They were messy and not the best craftsmanship. She had made them herself a couple months ago.
She cupped them in one hand, strode back to the group, and handed a cricket to each person.
The grownups – and Mel – held the crude pieces of jewelry as if they didn’t know what to do with them.
“They’re pins. You put them on your clothes. They’re gifts, because I think you are all… satisfactory,” she explained.

Sniper
I looked down at the little object in my hand. It was shaped like an insect, maybe a cricket of some sort.
“They’re pins. You put them on your clothes.” Lucy explained. “They’re gifts, because I think you are all… satisfactory.”
I stared at it for a second, tryna figure out what she meant by that.
“Thanks,” I finally muttered, not knowin’ whether she heard me or not. I slipped off my slouch hat and pinned the little bug to the upturned left side of the brim, like the fancy gold pin on an Australis soldier’s garb. He looked good there, a cheery little metal bloke.
Soldier took his and bit down on it, apparently completely missin’ Lucy’s explanation, before decidin’ metal wasn’t good for his teeth and put it in his pocket instead. Huntress inspected hers also before showin’ it to me. “These are…pretty cool.” she admitted.
When Lucy looked over at me again, I pointed to my hat. “I think he likes it up ‘ere. Should I name him?”
Sniper being better with kids than his wife is sending me lol.

Mel“I’ll call him Paul… Junior.” Mel fumbled around with the pin for a moment, trying to put it on without letting go of Gabriel’s hand. Eventually she gave up and put it in her pocket.

@loopylin @keilah-h (funny thing, I keep typing your KP tag on Unvale and then confusing myself when your username doesn’t pop up XD.)Gabriel
“I’m supposed to name it?” He questioned, peering at it in his free hand. For a second he had thought they were an earring until Lucy gave an explanation. “I never name things really.” He kept it in his palm, still examining it.

July 25, 2026 at 7:46 pm #212879@rae lollllll yeah I decided to use my youtube channel name across most of my socials now so it’s easier
@whalekeeper he does lol, it’s canonical to the fandom i took his lore from and I thought it was too funny to changeHuntress
Lucy explained the insect’s scientific name. “If you think it looks like a… another species, you can, er… call it anything you want.”
“No, his name sounds fine. I like scientific names. They’re pretty cool.” I said. “I’ve never encountered a Gryllus rubens before. I’ll have to show it to Engineer and Medic when we get home.”
If we go home, I thought, but didn’t say it out loud.
as for who we’re invading the home of next we have four options and three of them are mine. we can pick out of theirs or do Mel’s.

“Can we go to the kitchen now? I’m hungry.” Mel pointed to the door that they had come in from, but it had now changed. It was wooden, and had sun bleached paint that was starting to peel. The bottom had an unused cat door and a few splashes of dried mud from the rain. Mel recognized it. It was the door into her house from her backyard. Beyond it was her kitchen. Her stomach growled.

Lucy started, looking from Mel to the door. It had changed without the rest of them noticing. The stains of mud on the door made it look as if it belonged outside, pulled from a backyard or a porch.
Food sounded good. Lucy’s heart felt tired, in a good way, but that meant her body was tired too. She was a little out of breath for no reason. “Would that be… uh, C-Colorado?”
…
August 5, 2026 at 4:56 pm #213161@whalekeeper not me trying to figure out whether or not my characters would recognize the name “Colorado” because the Spanish language and the name of the river (although it’s largely localized to one state/planet instead of multiple) both exist in their universe
in the end I decided not to bring it up lol
Huntress
“Can we go to the kitchen now? I’m hungry.” Mel said, pointing toward the door.
It had changed when we weren’t looking (and when Sniper wasn’t standing in it); now it looked like a typical wooden door in an ordinary neighborhood. I’m pretty sure I’d seen a nearly identical door once when I was a teenager walking down the streets of a Shawmut suburb. There was a cat flap and a few dirt stains around the bottom.
Sniper came close, reached out and knocked on the door. No one answered, I don’t know why I expected someone to. He turned the handle and the door swung open.
“Is this your home, Mel?” I asked as we walked in.

The kitchen was small, with vinyl flooring and fake marble countertops. It was connected to the living room by a large doorway. In the living room was a couch, an armchair, a bookshelf, and a tv. Toys and comic books were scattered around on the carpet. Some were forced into the living room as the group crowded inside.
“Is this your home, Mel?” Huntress asked. Mel nodded. She let go of Gabriel’s hand and went over to the fridge. It had some pictures on it and a few alphabet magnets spelling out the sentence “Ml is supr awsm.” Most of the alphabet seemed missing. Also on the door, written in a hurry, was a note that had been there for many months. It was in her mom’s pretty handwriting, explaining that she would be working late again and telling Mel to remember to finish her homework. There were leftovers for dinner in the fridge.
Mel pulled open the door and dug into a drawer as the others looked around.
“Do you guys want a cheese stick?”

“Do you guys want a cheese stick?” Mel asked.
I stopped looking through a stack of paper on the table (it was a boring stack of paper anyway) and looked up. “Cheese stick?” I repeated. “Where?”
She gently pressed one into my palm. I bit it in half. Delicious. All too soon it was gone.
I shoved through the fridge. “Are there any more?”
Sniper pulled me away. “I don’t think you should be goin’ through their food like that, mate. We don’t live ‘ere, y’know.”
I growled in disappointment. The food smelled good, and that made me hungry.

Gabriel Mai
Gabriel took the offered cheese stick, trying to open the packaging. It felt so weird to his fingers, smooth and cold without texture or the same crinkle as paper. He eventually ripped it open, but hated the texture of the cheese. It felt a bit slimy to him, but he didn’t want to offend Mel, so took a tentative bite. The taste was much more mild than he was used to, and he wasn’t sure if he hated it or loved it. He had had mild cheese before, but those cheeses usually had a softer, looser texture, not this solid smoothness.
Instead, he smiled at Mel, eyes straying over all the oddities in Mel’s house as there were in Lucy’s room. His own cabin had felt familiarly sweet despite all the memories, now he felt like he didn’t belong where he stood.
Gabriel has been introduced to mozzarella, and since I don’t like it much, he probably won’t either XD.
