@tabitha-cassandra Sam is amazing! I personally relate more to Frodo and therefore usually call him my favorite character, but Sam really is an incredible role model. I wish he was my friend!
We went to see the Jonah musical! It remember really liking it, so I hope I get to go again some day. I hope you get the chance to go too!
@nanisnook I used to do something similar!
Yeah, looking back I think I may have pretty much missed the point of this topic and essentially just reminisced about my childhood… oops. Sorry everyone!
@joy-caroline
This sounds like fun! I don’t remember the first things I ever wrote, but here are some I do remember:
Don’t know if this really counts, but maybe you’ll find it amusing. They were “stories” written in crayon on construction paper I’d stapled or taped together, and had many more pictures than words. I actually still have a lot of them, including a story about a man running away from the cameras on tripods that were chasing him (yes, seriously). Usually though, they featured me and my friends and family members going on crazy adventures that hardly made sense. Often I just drew the pictures and got a family member to write down what I told them. I remember making a ton of them.
I also recall a story I wrote in first grade about a bowl of evil pieces of broccoli, which stands out in my mind for some reason. And then there was the Cinderella retelling I wrote for second or third grade featuring my pet hamster and I… I was really proud of that one at the time. I kid you not, it’s still on my bookshelf. My teacher printed them out and made covers for them and everything. Honestly, that teacher made me realize I loved writing. I don’t know if I would be a writer now without her.
I didn’t write them down or anything, but I also spent practically my entire childhood making stories up in my head or even sometimes acting them out with friends or my brother. Can anyone relate? The best one was about about a brother and sister and whose rich scientist father had an experiment go wrong which “turned him evil”. The brother and sister, along with their twin cousins (of which I was one), continually had to face him and his henchmen at different locations. Not to mention each kid had their own special power, for no other reason than we probably thought it was cool. It was one of the games my brother and I played with our close family friends, and it lasted for literal years. We pretended we were a part of that story everywhere we went together for the longest time, and we created a whole backstory and everything. It’s honestly a really happy memory from my childhood, all that time we spent immersed in that crazy story! It was the best!
Sorry for rambling, I know some of those weren’t even stories I actually wrote…
Hi Tabitha, welcome to Kingdom Pen! I’m Wyn, and I write fantasy and speculative fiction in general. It’s nice to meet you!
I also love LOTR! Do you have a favorite part or favorite character? Also, my family and I went to see a Sight and Sounds production once (quite a few years ago now) and we really enjoyed it!
I definitely understand the struggle of actually sitting down and writing consistently. One thing I’ve found that sometimes works for me is writing or creating something quick right before I actually work on my WIP that gets my mind on my story and gets me excited to write. I also sometimes simply have to make myself sit down and write, though. Nowadays I almost feel like I have to write consistently. Anyway, I hope you get to where you want to in your writing!
I look forward to seeing you around!
Good question! I usually avoid listening to music while writing because I find it too distracting, even without lyrics (probably because I just haven’t done it a lot). When I write I like to imagine the sounds of the scene I’m writing, and music can sometimes drown it out and overwhelm the atmosphere for me. However, if I’m trying to write in an environment with a lot of noise in the background (which is not often) I sometimes like to listen to instrumental music to drown that out.
@abigail-m @devastate-lasting @gracie-j @writerlexi1216 @godlyfantasy12 @joy-caroline @lewilliams Everyone has such good titles! It’s so fun to hear about them!
@e-k-seaver Ha, I guess that works too! 🙂Starting a new book is so exciting! I don’t know that I can help you much with rebellions and all that stuff (haven’t written any myself yet), but when I try writing new things like that I usually just jump in like you said and leave the rest to worry about after the first draft is complete. I don’t know if that’s the best possible idea, but it’s worked for me so far. You may also want to check out some other books and resources pertaining to the same sorts of issues that your book does. Your story sounds really interesting!
@lucy I’m sorry you hurt your arm! I’ll pray for you too.
Ah, I definitely relate to being in different moods for different books. Airman sounds interesting!
Yeah, I don’t really know a lot about psychology yet, but understanding people and the way they think and behave interests me. Not exactly all the intricate science behind it, though I know it’s important, but rather why people think and behave the way they do. If that makes any sense 🙂 .
Wow, this sounds both awesome and terrifying! I’d have to talk it over with my parents for online safety related reasons, but I’m definitely intrigued. (So long as you don’t mind the sort of nervous person who usually takes a while to open up to people and prefers to listen a lot more than talk!) Anyway, I can’t promise I’ll make it, but please keep me informed!
Hello Gideon, welcome to Kingdom Pen! My name is Wyn, and I write fantasy and other speculative fiction. Wow, you have a lot of siblings! I also like LOTR! Do you have a favorite book, or specific part or aspect of the books you like best?
You’re interested in psychology? That’s so cool! I don’t know a ton about it, but I’m definitely interesting in learning more some time. And your work sounds really interesting!
It’s so nice to meet you, and I look forward to seeing you around!
@godlyfantasy12 That looks awesome! So happy for you!
Congratulations!!! That’s amazing!!! 😀 (And that notebook sounds awesome!)
@joy-caroline That’s a good point! Thanks for the encouragement 🙂
@trulyyours_karilyn To be fair, I’ve only read the first book in the series and even that was quite a long time ago. I think I remember liking it, but I didn’t pick up the others (mostly because I only owned the first one). My brother got me to watch the Netflix series with him a while back, though. But I think the reason people like to read books like them are because they want to know what happens to the characters, find out more about the backstories that impact the plot (especially in the case of A Series of Unfortunate Events), and just because they enjoy the experience and the writing style. I know I’ve definitely read books or read further into a series in the past just to find out what happens next and what happens to the characters, even if I’m not super invested in it. Then, like I said, I only read the first book a long time ago, so I can’t say I’m really qualified to give an answer… just thought I’d share my thoughts.
