Let me know if anything in this scene feels too cliche! I think you’ll like it.
Nearing the end of July, we were spending a Sunday afternoon at the Culliver’s. Etta and Chester were there; it was the first time they’d joined us all since I’d begun talking to them again.
After eating lunch, Oscar and M…[Read more]

It was a dry, dry summer. The crops suffered, and Pa worried that they wouldn’t grow to full height in time to produce. There was also the constant fear of prairie fires. Some nights the horizon glowed orange, from the wild, consuming flames miles away.
I finally found the courage to talk to C…[Read more]

Okkkk this is one of my favorite scenes I’ve written thus far!
May 1887
I knew Albert would be coming home soon, at least, that had been his plan when he left a year ago. Not that I’d heard anything from him since he had gone. I didn’t know exactly when he was coming back, until one Sunday I saw him sit…[Read more]

Yes, but they probably would have called it courting back then. That’s why Libbie was so upset with Etta to start off with, because Etta started seeing Chester without telling her what was going on. And Etta had already known that Libbie had a crush on Chester.

Here ya go, while I’m here I might as well give you more.
As the winter thawed into spring, I knew it was time to make things right. I crossed the fields to the Cullivers’ house, and as I approached, I saw Etta’s petite figure working in the garden. She didn’t hear me coming until I was about ten feet away.
“Good day, Et…[Read more]

I still couldn’t bring myself to approach Etta as the harvest season arrived. Out of politeness, I attended the cornshuckings with all the other young people, but it felt like the fun was sucked out of them. Every t…[Read more]

Does Kari have a weapon of any kind that she would have been given? I know there was some minimal training, or at least, they planned to. I don’t remember if that ended up happening or if the fire diverted everything.

If any of you have ideas of plot twists I could add, or events that could happen in the story, I’d love to hear them. I feel like I keep running out of new ideas, but I want to strengthen my story and the characters. Maybe I just need to go read some more historical fiction from this time period lol.

That’s great that they don’t bother him too much! It took my brother some time to get used to, because he’s more sensitive to needles. I still can’t imagine being a three-year-old though and trying to understand what’s going on.

I haven’t done a good job of staying up to date on here, but I feel you. Public school is a rough environment, and especially in your case where you don’t have many options to choose from as far as friends go.
I know what it’s like to feel like you don’t have any close friends. In middle school, I had a close friend, and then…[Read more]

I don’t know if you could use this in your story at all, but I had a dream one time about some of the characters in a book I was reading, and in my dream, the main enemy somehow was slowly dying of a deadly disease but didn’t tell anyone about it, to make the protagonists think he was still perfectly healthy when he was not. I think my…[Read more]

I don’t share my writing with my family, either. A while ago (like back in middle school) I would write stories about a fictional family, based off of my family, and re-tell my family’s vacations that way. I let my brothers read some of those, and they were criticizing it left and right, so I stopped letting them read my writing.
I agree…[Read more]

Liliana
As Emmy slipped away from the table, Liliana’s eyebrow rose in curiosity. Where was she going? It was time to eat; the servants would be bringing out the food at any moment. A sharp pain in her shin brought her attention to Adeline, seated next to her.
“It’s not polite to raise your eyebrow,”…[Read more]
