Ooh, neat! I have a culture that avoids living on land, too, with more Maori and Hawaiian influence on the language and some Viking inspiration planned for their culture (and their hair, because Viking braids are epic).
That does sound like fun! (I get that. XD I am the queen of cursory Google searches… or else hours-long…[Read more]

This is the reputation I strive for. XD
That’s neat! I’m also intrigued by the Nordic/Slavic inspiration of your world; those are really cool cultures to draw from!

I’VE BEEN SUMMONED.
I pick 2-3 real-world languages to go with each culture I’m developing, pick the descriptors I want to use for the place I’m naming, put those descriptors into Google Translate for each…[Read more]

R.M. Archer replied to the topic Thinking alone vs talking with others. Which gives you more story ideas? in the forum Topic of the Week 2 years, 7 months ago
It’s probably a pretty even split for story ideas. For writing ideas in general, talking with people definitely wins; I get tons of ideas for blog posts and the like when I have discussions. And if I’m fleshing out a story idea I already have, it often helps to talk it out with someone else (whether they contribute ideas or simply serve as a…[Read more]

BTW, I want to clarify I don’t mean anything snarky or judgmental by my last paragraph. It was intended to be solely factual. Just in case it came across wrong. XP

It was not my intention to leave this for two months before responding… Sorry for the delay. XP
Peterson’s writing improved significantly throughout the series. Is it disappointing that the hook isn’t his best work? Sure. But short of him backtracking to rewrite the entire first book so that it’s on par with…[Read more]

R.M. Archer replied to the topic Calling all bloggers! in the forum Publishing & Platform 2 years, 7 months ago
Like Issabelle said, just ask! I recommend having some topics in mind that you could write about for them or that you’d like them to write about on your blog, since a lot of bloggers don’t know what other authors’ audiences would be interested in or aren’t sure what to write about for someone else vs. for their own blog. This was definitely a…[Read more]

R.M. Archer replied to the topic Do you Prefer Classical or Modern Literature? in the forum Topic of the Week 2 years, 8 months ago
I’d believe that. XD I’d intended to write up a compare-and-contrast review between the book and the movie after I read the book, but I never got around to re-watching the movie or writing the review, so… add it to the list of reviews I’ve intended to write and forgotten about. ;P But at some point I think that would still be…[Read more]

The book. I don’t think I knew there was a play, although that makes sense. I knew it was a musical and movie, among other things, so of course there would be a play somewhere in there. XD I actually watched the Emmy Rossum movie long before I read the book. (They’re very different, and each quite enjoyable in their own way.)

This. I didn’t grow up on classics, but I grew up to develop a more “old-fashioned” worldview and I feel like I fit better with classic authors and their literature than with most modern stories.

My answer is pretty much identical to yours! I used to largely dislike classics (or the idea of classics, anyway; I didn’t dislike as many of the classics that I read as I thought I did, lol), but in the past two or three years I’ve read more and more classics and they’ve definitely beat out modern fiction in my…[Read more]

So, perfect timing, Nadine Brandes and Sara Ella happen to be focusing on retellings in their webinar next month! There’s a $10 registration fee, but Nadine and Sara are always super helpful, they answer so many questions… Honestly, it’s worth a lot more than $10, in most cases if not all cases. XD And Nadine has written a couple of historical…[Read more]

R.M. Archer replied to the topic Who has impacted your writing the most? in the forum Topic of the Week 2 years, 9 months ago
Exactly! Long, deep conversations are my favorite, but it’s often hard to find people to have them with (or specific topics for discussion, lol). God has really blessed me with the friends I can have those conversations with, whether those discussions happen often or only on occasion.

There are so many people. My mom (encouraging me to read, allowing me to pursue writing for a good chunk of my homeschooling, critiquing my work over the years, etc.), my dad (he has a book started that I’m excited to read one day, he got me started reading fantasy, he’s also helped edit my work from time to time, etc.), my writing groups…[Read more]
