Hi! Awesome to have you here!
I’m also a big LotR fan, have you read any of Tolkien’s other books like the Silmarillion or the Hobbit?
Do you have any favorite poems or poets? I’ve recently been getting into poetry and kinda don’t know where to start when it comes to finding good poetry.
It’s great to meet your acquaintance! Catch…[Read more]

@avacoulter Welcome to Kingdom Pen! I’m Jodi, I mostly write fantasy these days, though I also write dystopia and historical fiction when I feel like it XD. And I’m also a big Marvel and LOTR fan!
Some questions:
What were the inspirations for your WIP (if you have one right now)?
Do you listen to music while writing or do you prefer silence? I…[Read more]

Jodi Maile replied to the topic Have you ever considered quitting writing? Why or why not? in the forum Topic of the Week 2 years, 11 months ago
@trahia-the-minstrel Yes!! It’s so hard for me to move into writing a new book, editing is one of my favorite parts. I feel like it’s easier to see the light at the end of the tunnel when I’m almost done editing, you know? Like all the effort is about to pay off, because I’m almost done with the project, and it’ll be published soon or something…[Read more]

@kathleenramm Yes. I actually have quit writing before. I just thought I was never going to measure up as a writer on my own, since I’m always so harsh on my own work. I lose faith in it and just hate it and then delete it or abandon it entirely. That had been going on for about seven years before I tentatively stepped into writing again last…[Read more]

Have you ever considered quitting writing? Why or why not?
For me, writing has always been something I’ve wanted to do more of, so I don’t think the thought of quitting has ever crossed my mind.I absolutely love writing with my siblings, I love writing by myself, there’s so many stories untold and so many areas where I want to improve. So I…[Read more]

Kathleen replied to the topic What's a story that you worked on for while but completely scrapped later on? in the forum Topic of the Week 2 years, 11 months ago
Ah, yeah. I think we’ve all have written stories all too similar to the traits you described.
Out of all the things lacking in House of Mages, what area do you think you’ve improved the most in writing since then?
@anatra23
Haha, that’s hilarious. It kinda reminds me of the first story I wrote which was literally just the story of…[Read more] -

I’m a tad bit late to the party, but um… here I am.
I tried reading The Wingfeather Saga a few months ago because I thought the cover was pretty epic and a lot of people on the forum liked it, but ummm…
I couldn’t finish it. And for pretty much all the reasons you listed in your essay. I can see why people…[Read more]

House of Mages actually sounds pretty cool. What was wrong with that made you not go through with publication?
Woah, that’s a cool idea. I don’t think I’ve ever heard of an idea like that. It sounds like a tricky story to write, but you should totally try going back to that story when you have the…[Read more]

Hmmm… maybe I’ll go back to Beatrice and her cow one day. Because yeah, now looking at it there’s a lot of cool ways I could direct the story.
lol. Nothing like a movie or book coming out with a premise oddly similar to the one you are working on to crush your motivation, haha. That’s happened to me at least once before, but I…[Read more]

What’s a story idea that you worked on for while, but completely scraped part way through the writing process? Why?
I have MANY. However, the one that sticks out to me most was a story I wrote when I was nine to ten-years-old.It was about a girl name Beatrice who lived with her Grandma in an un-mobile mobile home. The entire town despised…[Read more]

@devastate-lasting
True. Where do all those Eastern Dragons be tho?True. True. I actually liked the three introductions when I first read it too. I thought it was a deliberate poke at all the fantasy clichés. I hoped the story would be a somewhat fun yet heartfelt parody of the common fantasy stories. However, the rest of…[Read more]

Not-So-Secret Secret Assassin replied to the topic How do I make a non-cliche escape scene? in the forum Plotting 2 years, 11 months ago
I have written quite a few escape scenes in my lifetime (the very nature of my stories require it to be so), and cliche escape scenes are one of my pet peeves in stories, so I think that I have a few tips that I can help you with.
First, what constitutes a “bad escape scene”?
1. It’s super easy, and it makes the villain look weak
2. It’s…[Read more] -

Phil is great. My favorite character would probably Rei, but Norman is just a thread behind. I really like both smart and complex characters who are a lot more than what they appear. I kinda expected Rei in the beginning to be the typical emo kid with black hair and Norman to be the typical smart kid who never breaks the rules.…[Read more]

@elanor Great question! I wrangled with this for a long time in one of my stories. Here’s what I figured out from all that research and whatnot:
Think of the environment and how you can create environmental obstacles. In Avatar Volume 3, there are two episodes where Sokka and Zuko have to escape from a high-security Fire Nation prison surrounded…[Read more]

Which story took you the shortest to write and which took the longest? Why?
So for me the shortest amount of time it took to write a novel was 5 months and that was my siblings and my “Cliche Story”.Yuh, yeah. That was the working title that never got change because we wrote it mostly to have fun. Heh. We purposely wrote it to be as cliché as…[Read more]
