“I mean, what were you guys doing before you got here!” Trevor’s voice was raised a bit higher than it made sense for the question to be.
I shrugged. “Not much to be honest. He was at a job interview yesterday and I was hanging out at home.”
Huh. My friends. I wonder if any of them were worried about us.
Or did they not know we were gone?
Or maybe this weird world was connected with ours using some kind of magic, like the Narnia books, and whenever we finished this adventure we’d come back only an hour or so after we left.
Buuuuut if I brought that up I’m pretty sure the others would have NO idea what I was talking about, so I decided to keep that theory to myself.

“Don’t you guys think it’s odd,” Trevor asked, “That we all were brought here with only one other person, and that person happens to be the opposite gender?”
I hadn’t really thought of that. For Sniper and I, it was obvious. Even before we’d confessed how we felt about each other, we’d often been assigned together on missions. Our skillsets just fit together like that.
But what about the others? What could possibly be the reason they’d been taken here together?
Trevor trailed off his thoughts as the cave stretched further in front of us. Strange creatures glared at us from the walls, but none attempted to attack.
That in and of itself was a bit unsettling, but technically a good thing, because we’d be swarmed if they all decided to go at us at once.

I mulled over this. Two children in the labyrinth. This was starting to get worrying.
The new girl–clearly also human, or at least a human-dominant hybrid like my brother or the Mann twins–left Sniper’s side and hugged the crow, appearing shy. Or, y’know, scared of an Argonite and Ornithiform.
Lucy picked up some rocks and started hitting them together absentmindedly. I would’ve done that too if i were….nine? Ten? I couldn’t her exact age but she was definitely under twelve.
I came up to the new kid. “Hey there….Mel? That’s your name, right? We’re not gonna hurt you. Well, okay, We’re not going to try to hurt you on purpose. If we do it’ll be by accident. But that’s not gonna happen.”
Why did I say that? That sounded kinda stupid.
It did get her to take notice and pay attention to me.
The crow squawked and tried to peck at my hat. I jumped out of pecking distance. “Hey! Stop that!”

“Did you see that white creature too?” Azalea asked.
Emmerich pointed to the opening of the cave, stretchin’ in front of us like a mouth. “That cave is where it went. We were determining whether or not to follow it or wait for its return. Sniper, Huntress, do you have any input on the decision?”
“I’m willin’ to get in there and take it down.” I said.
Huntress nodded. “I’m up for that too!”

@whalekeeper what do you mean “looks unappealing,” that looks delicious.

It is on the planet Earth.
Emmerich learned from last time i see lol
Huntress
This pair looked like humans too.
I elbowed Sniper. “Looks like you’re the only one of your kind around here.”
He muttered a growl but didn’t say anything intelligible.
Emmerich introduced himself to the couple, whose names were Trevor and Azalea–typical human names.
I noticed Trevor also had a pistol on him, although it was definitely a different model than mine.
He turned to me. “And who would you two be?”
“I’m Jaylen. You can call me Huntress, though. We’re, uh, not from Earth…probably best to leave it at that.” I said.
Sniper held out his hand for Trevor to shake. “My name’s Mick, although since the both of us ‘ave been usin’ our callsigns all this time, I’d prefer it if ya called me Sniper.”
I gestured to Trevor’s gun. “So where, exactly, is Earth’s tech level at? Seems like you have varying degrees across the planet if I’m to believe you’re both from there.”

“Crocodile man,” the kid said, lookin’ up at me wondrously.
This was confusin’.
I flicked my tail and looked back at it, a bit sheepish. “What?”
Huntress and Soldier snickered at me. I gave them an annoyed look.
his brain has stopped working lol

Huntress easily blazed a path for us, trackin’ the creature. I would’ve done the same, but I instead kept an eye out for any others that would wanna eat us.
Several times I sensed somethin’ nearby, but I couldn’t tell whether it was a talkin’ sentient creature or not.
Eventually we reached a cave.
“Its trail leads in there.” Huntress readied her gun. “Do you think we should go in or wait till it comes out?”
Somethin’ rustled behind us. I whipped out my rifle and aimed it into the bushes.
“You’re not gettin’ another one of us that easy.” I growled.

Soldier plummeted. So did the other bird, which was basically a gigantic crow.
Luckily the crow spread his wings at the right time and slowed his fall enough to land in a giant hedge.
Sniper and I ran over to try and help, but Lucy and the other girl figured it out themselves. Their mount hopped away with a piece of string in his mouth. The other girl tried to pull it away from him, resulting in a tug of war.
Soldier leaped on the crow’s back, causing him to squawk angrily and thrash about–luckily dropping the string. The girl stumbled backward.
Sniper caught her. “Whoa there, sheila. Steady.”
She looked up at him, apparently startled by the fact that he had a tail.
I wonder if she’ll react to the fact that he called her a name that wasn’t hers (it’s just his standard honorific for a female lol)
