Lin replied to the topic What do you believe is one of the most important elements of a good story? in the forum Topic of the Week 5 years, 10 months ago
@kathleenramm East of Eden by John Steinbeck has some great characters. And Dickens also has many memorable characters as well.
For me, it has to have a good ending. Not a happy ending, necessarily, but a good ending. I judge a whole work based off of the ending. For the ending to Inkdeath, I was so dissatisfied with it that I hated the whole b…[Read more]

@kathleenramm There were, actually. I felt like they were all developed pretty well. The mc wasn’t my favorite character… he’s kinda an awkward teen, tho that does play into his character arc. There’s some pretty good side characters tho 🙃
Anyway, yeah I would definitely recommend it. I’m re-reading the series (The Reckoner’s Trilogy), and…[Read more]

@kathleenramm (Yea; world-building is great, once one gets the hang of it.) Oh, and also: The Desolation of Smaug (also Extended Edition), and The Lord of the Rings books, The History of Middle-Earth books, Unfinished Tales/etc., lots and lots of Charles Dickens (The Mystery of Edwin Drood, and Barnaby Rudge/etc.), The Fall of Gondolin, The…[Read more]

The Prestige is an awesome movie! I really enjoyed it.Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban! It’s such a well made movie and I absolutely loved the book as well. But the movie, which I watched about six weeks ago, broke my eighteen month writers block and I started writing a…[Read more]

@kathleenramm Probably the movie The Prestige by Christopher Nolan. Absolutely stunning. The way the plot was, how the characters acted…made me realize the potential of extremely convoluted plots.
That wasn’t the most recent, though. I just wanted to mention it.
The actual most recent was probably The Golden Sheep, Vol. 1 by Kaori Ozaki,…[Read more]

@r-m-archer Thanks!
@gracie-j Thank you! Also my synopsis…

Hey there, recently discovered this fun thing and thought that I might share it with ya’ll.
Essentially it’s a text analyzer to find out which famous author do you write like, style-wise. Just copy/paste a chapter or something of a story into the box and in a few seconds you’ll get results. The longer the better.
Is it accurate? I pasted a…[Read more]

@kathleenramm I was at a speech and debate competition for homeschoolers, and I guess they happened to be in the same region. I saw their last name, asked the youngest kid if he knew Josiah DeGraaf, and responded with, “Yeah, he’s my brother.” Needless to say, I was shook.

@kathleenramm Is that so? Then I’ll it to my to-watch list. And maybe get to it after… *squints at list* Yeah, when I have some free time.
I was too lazy to learn how to reread sheet music for the kalimba so I mainly just play by ear. It’s good practice for transposing different songs into the key of C and helps me remember the main melody of…[Read more]

First of all, I completely agree about MacGuffins. They’re not bad, after all, I would argue that LOTR is a reverse-MacGuffin-quest-thing, but they’re often lazy.
Secondly! My worst mistake? I don’t know exactly, but a lot of my early stories and novels suffered from far too many main characters and subplots connected to those…[Read more]

@kathleenramm Probably thinking that my writing was good, lol. My child brain had no concept of what good writing actually was. Gotta say nowadays I feel like I’m falling into the same trap. I have to constantly remind myself to keep the pride down and be humble.

Is it odd that I…don’t get a ton of new story ideas? Like, I definitely get ideas for one of my two current WIPs, but I can’t really remember the last time I had an idea that wasn’t applicable to either one or the other. My dear duology just takes up a lot of headspace, y’know?
When I get an idea for my WIP, though, lately my…[Read more]

They’re in my standalone novel. Hoping to finish the first draft of it in November.
Tempest is the main character and narrator. Reven is her best friend. Almost like a little brother to her.

@kathleenramm Not really, haha. The closest would be a few days ago when I dreamed I was watching Makoto Shinkai’s new non-existent anime. When I woke up I really wanted to write it down, but I forgot the ending, unfortunately.
