Jodi Maile replied to the topic Have you ever considered quitting writing? Why or why not? in the forum Topic of the Week 2 years, 11 months ago
@trahia-the-minstrel Yes!! It’s so hard for me to move into writing a new book, editing is one of my favorite parts. I feel like it’s easier to see the light at the end of the tunnel when I’m almost done editing, you know? Like all the effort is about to pay off, because I’m almost done with the project, and it’ll be published soon or something…[Read more]

Jodi Maile replied to the topic Have you ever considered quitting writing? Why or why not? in the forum Topic of the Week 2 years, 11 months ago
@kathleenramm Yes. I actually have quit writing before. I just thought I was never going to measure up as a writer on my own, since I’m always so harsh on my own work. I lose faith in it and just hate it and then delete it or abandon it entirely. That had been going on for about seven years before I tentatively stepped into writing again last…[Read more]

Jodi Maile replied to the topic How do I make a non-cliche escape scene? in the forum Plotting 3 years ago
@elanor Great question! I wrangled with this for a long time in one of my stories. Here’s what I figured out from all that research and whatnot:
Think of the environment and how you can create environmental obstacles. In Avatar Volume 3, there are two episodes where Sokka and Zuko have to escape from a high-security Fire Nation prison surrounded…[Read more]

Thanks for starting this conversation! All I can say is that you guys are great and I’ve just learned so much right now reading through all your responses.
I don’t have much to add, since I think you guys have covered everything that I would have said. I think I’ll just address the topic of Jornan and Emeric and the personal issues…[Read more]

@trahia-the-minstrel The forum ate my last reply so I’m replying again! XD
I just checked my books and it looks like I have the Phantom Hourglass, Spirit Tracks, Ocarina of Time, Twilight Princess, and Wind Waker books! And I love Midna’s Lament and the Song of Time/Song of Storms. I also love the Gerudo Valley theme!I hadn’t seen Spencer…[Read more]

Jodi Maile replied to the topic When you don't like the direction of your story… in the forum General Writing Discussions 3 years ago
@abigail-m Hey and welcome back! Thanks for replying! I’m so glad this is such a relatable issue, since I tend to struggle with it a lot. Especially recently, I’ve realized more and more that you should just write what needs to be written, even when you feel like you should be adding other things. Trying to add in themes just kills my writing, so…[Read more]

I should also add that I love Taylor Davis’s Zelda violin album! Her covers of Zelda music themes are so good.

@trahia-the-minstrel no worries! I love your Zelda fanart!
Once, I was Link for Halloween. I still have the whole costume, partly made by myself and partly bought online. I actually have a replica Master Sword, which is pretty cool, and the Hylian shield. Both are fairly heavy to carry around but I plan to hang them on my wall someday 🙂
I’ve…[Read more]

That premise sounds interesting! I’m definitely leaning toward the resistance saying no to Torrent, I feel like that would make her have to come up with her own solutions, which would be interesting to read about. I’m also a big Rogue One fan, so…yeah. That might have something to do with my choice XD

No worries! Thank you for your input, I always appreciate hearing other people’s advice about this issue, since it is something I struggle with more often than I like. With relatively small short stories, I’m fine with restarting them, since a thousand or so words is not as big of a commitment to me as a novel is. But I…[Read more]

Jodi Maile replied to the topic What's something you thought was necessary in writing, but actually wasn't? in the forum Topic of the Week 3 years, 1 month ago
True, villains and antagonists don’t always need to be in a story. I’m usually writing some kind of story where they’re like, far away, so they don’t always show up in the main story (you know, like a Sauron kinda thing), so I always feel like I have to find ways to have them interact with the protagonist. But…I don’t always need…[Read more]

@lydia-s so sorry for the late reply! And thank you so much for your advice, I’ll definitely keep it in mind next time I’m faced with something like this. I ended up trying to rewrite it a couple times and on about the third try, I got something I really liked! So I’ve finished that short story now 😁

So cool! A synopsis would be much appreciated, I enjoy hearing about other people’s works! 🙂
Yep, pretty much same. Ever since I thought to myself that I could write stories like the ones I was reading, I’ve been trying to tell stories XD

@trahia-the-minstrel That’s so cool! We might have the same ocarina! And Song of Storms is such a beautiful one to play. I love Song of Time too!
I love the inspirations for your story. The novel I’m planning to write is about a girl who has to save her country from an invading army, but this WIP is still in the very beginning stages of planning…[Read more]

@lorelei-writer Hellooo! Welcome! I’m Jodi, and I write a bunch of things, usually fantasy or dystopia these days depending on my mood XD
Some questions:
Do you have a WIP you’re currently working on?
What inspired you to start writing? I’ve always loved fantasy books, which is how I ended up writing so much of it…
Anyway, nice to meet…[Read more]
