This, was much harder than I thought it would be. Congrats on coming up with challenging homework!
I have been thinking about the theme for my current WIP for a while, but coming up with the focusing questions and the message was really helpful for me to narrow down what I wanted to convey through my story.

Story: The Witch of Blackbird Pond.
Theme: Acceptance
Focusing Question: What does it take to be accepted and make friends in a new place?
Message: You must be friendly in order to have friends.I have a small question, and please forgive me if it should have been asked somewhere else. Is it possible for secular books to have a theme? Or do they…[Read more]

Shaina replied to the topic Discussion for Video Two: The Importance of Theme in the forum Discussion Questions 7 years, 9 months ago
I think what excites me most about theme is that it is able to create stories that linger in a persons mind. Like in a book I read recently called Heartless. In the book the main character is pursued by a prince who loves her even when she is unlovable. The theme is the power of unconditional love and I am still blown away by how the author did…[Read more]

Shaina replied to the topic Sorcerer guy in the forum General Writing Discussions 7 years, 9 months ago
If all this guy does is predict something that is going to happen, I am pretty sure that is just prophecy (I could be wrong).
A question to ask yourself is where is his power coming from? A good place or a bad place? The reason most people don’t like sorcery or magic is that the power does not come from God, therefore it must come from somewhere else.

Shaina replied to the topic Writers Score Results in the forum General Writing Discussions 7 years, 9 months ago
You guys all got good scores! I got a 60 the second time round, which honestly surprised me.
Good luck with your blog, @Gabrielle, it sounds neat! I have had one for a while, it isn’t the biggest or prettiest thing in the interweb, but it is fun, and I think I have grown as a writer because of it. (and gotten better with deadlines. 🙂 ) -

You can also get some great ideas for a slumping story by listening to young boys play games. They make up the craziest things!

Shaina replied to the topic Those Tear-jerkers :'( in the forum Book Discussions 9 years ago
Hmmm, I don’t usually out and out cry over books, though there are a quite a few that make me tear up. The ending of Lord of the Rings does that to me every, single, time.
But, there are a couple that I have bawled over. ‘The Boy in the Striped Pajamas’, very well done, very, very sad. And ‘The Three Brides’, I love the book so much, even…[Read more]

Shaina replied to the topic NaNoWriMo in the forum General Writing Discussions 9 years ago
This will be my second year of doing NaNoWriMo. I finished my novel last year, but I didn’t make it to the word count. I still called it a success! We will see if I have a success of any form this year…
My advice would be to write every day. Even if its only 200 words. Write every day so you keep the creative juices flowing!

You know your a writer when you can point out all of the typos, even the ones in professional writings. I actually kind of wish sometimes that I didn’t see them.

Question. Is anyone else having trouble keeping their stories within the word limit?
I constantly have to chop my stories to make ’em fit, so they are not always as good as I would like. -

You know you are a writer when shopping for notebooks and pens is more fun than shopping for candy!

Shaina replied to the topic Is it Possible? in the forum Novel Idea Critiques 9 years, 1 month ago
Hmmmm, very true. I think it would be hard to get readers used to it. I doubt it would be necessary in a story. There are many other ways to tell a story that are just as interesting. But I would still like to try from a purely literary ‘what if’ stand point. I am completely sure that it would never get published. 🙂
Anyway, thanks for the…[Read more] -

Very nice! It is not like anything I have read before, but that’s fine. I write free verse as well, though sometimes I do try to make it rhyme, or have meter. This is one is distinctly my style, with a mixture of both! Do not be afraid to critique…….

If you critique a book while reading it.
Haha! I do that all the time!
You know you are a writer when you have 15 minutes to write, and the next thing you know its been two hours!

I haven’t ever tried writing anything from the POV of anything but a human. That could be interesting…..
Has anyone ever had will o’ the wisps in their story? They are small, glowing creatures that lead the hero to their destiny, or to their grave, depending on the story. They are fascinating creature, and I love the way that they are…[Read more]

@IvyRose
I totally did that during our last vacation! I even brought a story to work on just in case inspiration struck, and I still came up with a new story! You know you are a writer when you hear a song and go, “Oh! That would go perfect in that one scene I am working on!”

You know you are a writer when you groan in a movie because you just KNOW that even you could write that particular strip of dialogue waaaay better than the script writers did.

Shaina replied to the topic no such thing as magic in the forum Fantasy 9 years, 1 month ago
This has been very interesting for me! At first I was completely against, but I started looking into myself, and now I see your point. I mostly agree with you, I still think that there is magic, but that it is a MUCH narrower field than I previously thought.
