Yeah, heavy themes can be really hard to write well.
But I do really like the ending of your story with the hero scarifying himself at the end. It makes the theme hit so much harder. I barely know anything about your story, but I can see how the theme and character arc might feel half-hearted without him sacrificing himself…[Read more]

Favorite time period? Hmmm… Probably the ancient time period. I definitely would never want to live in that time, but there are so many cool things to learn (and steal for writing purposes) from.
What’s something from history that’s given you a memorable story idea?
Well, I guess I usually come off as pretty quite, introverted,…[Read more]

That’s really interesting! I don’t think I’ve ever experienced that.
I’m not sure if you want any tips on ways to maybe help you be more critical of writing, but here’s some thoughts I had that might help.
Sometimes when I’m reading a book and want to use it as a way to improve my own writing, I keep a notebook with me as I read. On…[Read more]

@sparrowhawke Haha, yup. And knowing me, I’ll probably end up with ANOTHER trilogy in the mix at some point.
Thanks! I write mostly about faeries and humans, since those are the main two races in the book. But within the category of “faeries” there are elves, gnomes, dwarves, sprites, pixies, naiads, dryads, half-blood/hybrid faeries that are a…[Read more]

@keilah-h Ehh… not usually my cup of tea, but I’ve read the first Wings of Fire book. Not my fave thing in the world but it was good.

@sparrowhawke *oh shoot i didn’t mean to type mana on the summary for THBoH XD it’s called aera, just clarifying 🙂
Also, aera IS NOT magic. It is power (for lack of a better word) granted to the faerie races by God so that they can protect themselves, heal, etc. It’s just their natural God-given defense like a porcupine has quills and a bear…[Read more]

Percy Jackson was actually the book that got me into reading!
And I’m with you on the History subject. For me I think it really depends on the history book and whether or not they focus more on the people or on dates and basic events. When I started reading history that focused more on the actual people and their lives I started…[Read more]

I’ll definitely will be checking those out!
That’s so interesting! 1st person POV has always been my favorite and still is, haha. What books changed your mind on first person POV?
Yeah, I had the exact same experience with books I had to read that were part of a school curriculum. Still to this day they…[Read more]

@nanisnook Of course! And it’ll also save you more work – if you go in and write the ideas now, then you can write fluidly about those same ideas as the story goes on. 🙂

@kathleenramm I know I’m late to this topic, but it seems really funny, so I’ll join in XD
So. Three characters from my series!
1. TÃ e – a fiercely introverted, very shy elf. He’s very sentimental and loving, though. Strangely, he has no mana (mana is power granted to the faerie races by God for defense and healing). He’d probably be, in…[Read more]

@kathleenramm Hmm… I haven’t really gotten a lot of critiques on my writing. But sometimes people tell me that my themes are heavy, and I’m like “wait, really?” I mean, my series has a rather lighthearted tone to it, in my opinion (lots of funny things sprinkled in and lots of action) but is it really that heavy? So I guess I’m just working with…[Read more]

What’s the harshest or most honest critique you’ve ever received about your writing?
Now, I have a hard time getting raw honest feedback, because most of the people I hang around with (aka my siblings) are super nice.
But I really wanted honest feedback on my writing. So what I did was have someone on the KP team critique one of my short stories,…[Read more] -
