I rarely enter these conversations, although it’s not because I don’t have thoughts to share. XD But I saw your post and thought I might have something to add.
As someone who does believe that speaking in tongues is the innitial sign of new birth by the Spirit, I still do not want to discount the experience you have with God. I fully believe that you have seen God’s grace and power in your life. That you do not see the Scriptures the same way I do and that you have had a different experience with God as a result is not surprising to me. We are all in a journey toward the fulness of Truth. I don’t have full understanding on everything any more than you do.
Do I belive two part baptism by water and by Spirit is the Biblical way of life in Jesus, and that it is necessary for salvation? Yes. Our faith if only as strong as our obediance (Scripturally) and I see evidence for “repent and be baptised in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of you sins and ye shall recieve the gift of the Holy Ghost” all throughout the Bible. Ephesians calls this baptism in the Spirit the “seal” by which we are prepared for eternal redemption. It’s not about tongues although they are a significant sign and there are reasons God chose them, but it’s about spiritual renewal to the fullest promise of God. There is a richness offered in this infilling that is beyond beautiful. Honestly, it is an experience that I would wish everyone had. I would be a fearful, confused girl who felt absolutely cut off from God if not for the specific ways He has intervened in my life. I find healing in surrendering to His presence. How else can I be the temple of the living God? This is a promise given to all those who seek God. (Acts 1:5-8; 2:14-19, 49)
Now, I understand God has moved in your life, and continues to. You say you have felt the power of His Spirit dwelling with you. I believe that. He draws you into a deeper relationship with Him just like he draws me. That you follow after God without the same experience I have had is honestly impressive. I love you and will always be happy to support and pray with you as my friend. Also totally willing to answer questions to the best of my ability. Can I ask some of my own?

“We write and speak in the language of the Elders. Taenga Sinear. This common tongue is beginning to be used among strangers, so I learned it a few years ago but we’ve spoken the Teanga as long as memory lives. Here.” He drew out a wax tablet and hunted down his stylus as he talked.
“Every letter corresponds to a tree or a star.” He drew the first five runes in rapid succession. “The birch, the elm, the willow, the ash, and the oak. B/v, e/ey/a, w/v, sh/s, and o/k. And here is the star of dirrection.” A sweeping letter appeared beneath his stylus rather like the ‘g’ in Bryce’s alphabet. “It controls a word’s meaning like it guides a ship in the sea.”
He looked back at Bryce with a grin. “I haven’t found many books here in this tongue. Which is strange, because the best stories and wisdom are recorded in it.” He shrugged and replaced his writing implements to the spot in the heap before him. “But I’ve heard some people have outlawed it. Perhaps that is why.”
Tavar leaned back in his chair and gazed at the wealth of knowledge around him. So much wisdom and entertainment locked away into unknown languages. A sigh slipped through his smile.

Ah! What a great question. Here are some thoughts:
What triggered the flash back? Memories usually have a trigger anyway, but because these are grief/trauma memories, those triggers are likely to be abrupt. They’re best if they’re comnected to the plot or character. For instance, I have a character who lost his sister at a young age. He has several flashbacks triggered by flowers, seeing little girls playing, and heavy soled boots/wild crowds. (the last one is connected to her death) Another character remembers a childhood memory of his father when he’s carrying books and when he mets a “tame” eagle.
Now, are these pleasant or disconcerting? Are they normal memories or trauma induced ones? That will change how the triggers work. There is a difference between a traumatic episode and a normal grief trigger. PTSD episodes are more emotion based with specific physical/mental feelings. Maybe you feel your fingers breaking again after almost tripping (personal experience with post traumatic stress that cleared up before becoming a disorder). They can also be a disorienting moment when you feel like you are back in the former situation (war vet hears an alarm and thinks there’s a bomb coming, etc.). Keep in mind grief triggers aren’t all painful and can be nice in a bitter sweet way.
Of course, flashbacks can also just be a trip sown memory lane. Maybe you eat something your grandmother used to make and feel like you’re an eight year old at the kid’s table for Thanksgiving again. These are great for backstory and are probably not as abrupt, though they can be just as impactful.
So, think through your character’s story. What are things that are significant to them or to their experiences with the people he would remember? Also think how the memory will affect him. He is remembering good times(or not songood) along with a painful reality that he lost people. That arrouses grief and other emotions. How do they change his view of his own quest/the book’s plot?
Otherwise, I suggest making them vivid and short. You are not just conveying information about someone, but you are telling the reader what was lost, what the mc thinks about it, and probably why his quest is important. You are also getting to know people through these flashbacks, so you want them to be little “timecapsles” of personality.
So yeah. That’s my two cents. Hope it was helpful!

Hello! So glad to meet you! (sorry this is a late response) We have been desperately needing a dark overlord in these parts.
I’m Elishavet, lover of history, stories, and beautiful things. (like perriwinkle blue evenings, Psalm 27, and hot chai) If I’m not writing an essay or a poem on dewy grass, it’s my WIP with darling characters who keep trying to 1. offer their friends food, 2. Die. That is, if I’m writing.
I am not your target audience. XD Suffice it to say I would not benefit from it. The concept is interesting, though. Would it have a happy ending or would it be a tragedy?

I’m Elishavet around here, as you can tell from my profile name. I write a smattering of things from short stories and poems to a YA epic that is in time out for being too ambitious. Currently, I mostly write nonfiction (college essays) and have just begun a rustic/high fantasy thing I’m calling Songs in Starlight. It’s about a bunch of people who get lost and find their way home. Basically, giving and taking a few details.
I’m a bit of a nerd when it comes to most things like literature, fashion/cultural history, and definetely the Bible. It’s the best thing to be nerdy about.
Which brings me back to you.
First, CONGRATULATIONS on writing two books! It sounds like you have some great skills built up. What is your favorite part of your process? What’s your least favorite?

What kind of plants have you worked with? What are your favorite?

I’m Elishavet around here. I write a smattering of things from poetry and short stories to a YA epic that’s on the backburner. Currently, I write mostly nonfiction (college essays) and a rustic/high fantasy inspired by Norse/Irish culture, Paul’s epistle to the Ephesians, and the Silmarilion, called Songs in Starlight.
I’m also beginning a freelance illustrating business and am always up for an art discussion whether it’s about past artists, current art struggles (hands for instance.), or little victories.
Your WIP sounds fascinating! I love what I can tell of its “texture.” Light weilding should always be legendary and never just a myth. Same with truth.

I have heard, but have not read.
Chocolate, however, I have consumed. The best is a ballance between dark and milk with some deied fruit or cookie bits in it. Unless it is Spanish truffles. Mmmmmm….
Have you heard of/read Christina Baehr? I have a feeling her work is a very different genre from what you are talking about, but I can’t help but think of her books every time I see your username.

That makes me think of the god-disguised-as-a-beggar, and I love the themes associated with that trope. Except in this case, you have a lot more variety going on. This is not just a message about judging a book by its cover – this is also about preconceived beliefs and how they can blind you.
It’s such a fun trope! I hadn’t actually thought of it that way, since most of the story is from the POV of the disguised, but yes, exactly. Those devious preconceived notions.

Seeing truth like Inglor would be such a nice ability to have nowadays. I mean in a fantastical sense; we are lucky to see the truth more easily than others.

He is against the revolution because it hurts the people he loves. It is all very confusing and painful to him, as you can imagine. But he might start to change his mind.
Aw. Yeah, that would be a rough place. More than a little scarry.
He was designed to be a side character for the roleplay. He is not brave, intelligent, or wise, and there is nothing about him that screams protagonist. But I loved his social ignorance too much, hehe. He’s a silly lil guy. So I’m going to give him his own thing. So there.
Sometimes it’s the weird little side characters that steal the show. I’m glad he’s getting his own thing! Social ignorance is one of the most relatable aspects in literature. We should see it more.

Hmm. That is a good scene. I love Rivendel in both. It’s such an ethereal yet cozy place. The dramatic camera angles had me laughing a lot too, or wiggling in awe depending. It’s funny how specific scenes will stick on one’s head. Do you ever imagine your books as movies?

Yes! Actually read that aloud to my Mom once. It was hilarious. I liked that one and Safiki’s story the best. What about you?

Fantasy croquet…. with Remmington….. That sounds both hilarious and terrifying. As I am sure it should be. Would he be for or against any revolution? How much does that play a part in his story?

Technically he’s not an elfling, he’s a DÃlis… that is, a descendant of the Vow Keepers. In his world “elf” is a racial slur. *narrows eyes at Koshka* But basically, yes. XD He has heightened senses generally, talks to trees, and is ridiculously agile. But his real gift is that he can see truth. =D

For the DÃlise, who have so many lies circulating about them, it is common to be mistaken for something else. For instance, a stranger traveling through the Wode expects to see lots of animals, maybe a renegade outcast from society -> sees Inglor -> only perceives a white owl perched too high in the tree to see clearly. That’s an extreme example, but in more general terms, people are often a little different from how they first appear. However, Inglor usually sees past a façade to the heart of a person. This does not mean he can’t be tricked because he’s far from omniscient and rather too young to understand everything anyway. But it is useful….
I’m not being mean to him really, not me. It’s that nasty villian, you know?
