I love this so much. Sorry I didn’t reply before now. Work has been insane. For a week. I’m typing this up on my lunch break.
I’m thinking of doing a Men of Iron move with Wilhelm’s battle reflexes… It would be a completely different approach than typical modern fencing based on getting points.
Wilhelm
His opponent was holding his own. The challenge had Wilhelm’s blood running high in his ears. A smile gleamed in his eyes though it never reached his lips.
Wolfgang’s sword flashed toward him. Wilhelm had no time to think. He pivoted, striking the blade away from himself with his own. The swords rasped against each other, locking into place for a split second.
Everything happens in the moments between seconds.
Wilhelm leaped forward. His shield raised before he had a conscious thought to do it.
Thud
In want of an offensive weapon, defense can become offense. His shield connected with Wolfgang’s collarbone. The other boy was thrown back against the door.
“Oh!” Wilhelm stepped back He let out a breath.”Are you all right?”
I don’t think that would cause serious injury. He will probably have a bruise though. Boys. Lol. Do what you like.Â

I’m glad the others had timely responses for you! I just wanted to say I have impulses to fast fiction specifically. Once, I fasted all writing for a month, although I did not do it in an entirely beneficial way. Writing non-fiction/journaling/poetry is incredibly powerful for one’s personal Spiritual life. The thing that makes me want to sometimes back off fiction is that I can forget that myth is best used as a lense to see reality with new eyes and instead lose touch with the world God made. For that reason, it can be good to take a step back to refocus. I will not try to say whether God is asking you to step away from writing or not, but I thought I’d let you know I’ve been somewhere similar.
And here’s some food for thought. You seem to have a strong foundation on which your understanding of fasting is built, but here’s a bit of mine in case it helps.
Fasting is something you do for your own personal Spiritual life and/or to bring down strongholds. There are two passages of Scripture on fasting that come to mind. First is Matthew 6, which teaches that it’s to realign your trust and desires into God’s will. Second is Isaiah 58:3-12 which describes the kind of fast that God want us to practice. Basically, it’s about taking away the things that can hinder relationship with God and others (Not about punishing ourselves or trying to convince God to do something). Verses 6-8 say specifically God chooses a fast that is “to loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free, and that ye break every yoke?… to deal thy bread to the hungry, and that thou bring the poor that are cast out to thy house? when thou seest the naked, that thou cover him; and that thou hide not thyself from thine own flesh?” Fasting challenges us because it brings some of our own faults to light so they can be dealt with. Both passages continue to challenge my understanding of fasting and even prayer.

I actually might be able to make this one. *cue muted cheering*

It is, but we’re all pretty awkward tbh. :] We’ve done this before and I can safely say the rest of us will not care if you have vocal ticks or don’t know how to carry a conversation.
This is almost painfully valid. 🤣
Really though, we’re a great group to meet with. We don’t mind if you say half your sentences inside-out (like um, me) or don’t want to talk a lot (we’ve all been there) or talk LOTS!

Yessss!
My work schedule is about to change around a lot, so I’m not sure exactly what will work. (I’m working at a campground and we’re entering camp season.) Around 3-4 pm would probably be best/closest to possible. After this next week I’m not sure if it will return to it’s prior schedule (free after 5) or do something else wild and entirely ungodly. (why do youth camps stay up so late? I have never liked a 1 am curfew.) My time zone is Central Time.
Saturday afternoons are also possibility. I would not be able to meet this weekend, but after that it would be case-by-case. They’re usually free.
I will say, since I’m not 100% sure what will work best with this upcoming schedule, pick what works best for everyone else and I’ll join as best I can. After this next week, my schedule should even out again/be more open. Hopefully.

Eek! Lol.
Wilhelm
He had been on the verge of telling Wolfgang that he wouldn’t aim for his sword – Wilhelm’s target would always be his opponent, not a weapon – when the boy vanished.
That door had a rough time of it that night. Wolfgang’s reentry rattled the cups left on their table.
“En garde!” Cried the madcap creature as he advanced on Wilhelm, brandishing a long, ridiculously narrow blade. Wilhelm met the attack, his laughter lost in a shout.
Forward. His shield rose to divert Wolfgang’s thrust. His own sword was in his hand the next moment, already darting for an opening. Wolfgang leapt back with easy agility, and Wilhelm filled the gap, pressing the fight back toward the door.
Speed was obviously Wolfgang’s best strength. As the ruling factor of most fights, Wilhelm had to admire the choice. Afterall, that was why he had been trained to fight by reflex over mind. Some things were too slow.
He parried another thrust and struck his first attack.

I’m wondering who is going to win this….
Wilhelm
He was in the middle of fitting his sheild onto his left arm. He kept his gaze on his work, but his eyebrows were rising into his hair. They were more trouble to keep in order than either his sword or his shield.
“Heavy weapons prepare us for pitched battle. Strength must be built by long trial in peacetime.” His shield and a polite expression now firmly in place, Wilhelm looked up at his new friend. “I have never seen a style like yours. I would be curious to see your sword.”

Aww. I love him. He looks like a slightly snarky sweet heart with a big destiny.

Hehe.
By the way, his arming sword is a little under a yard long. His great sword is probably five feet, a precursor to the Zweihänder sword if he was in our world.
Wilhelm
“So instead you use flimsy weapons? I don’t see the wisdom of that. What about glaves and halberds? But nevermind. I’ve another trainer here somewhere.” He tossed the arming trainer to Wolfgang. “You can use that one, if you would risk using a weapon you did not train for.”
He began rummaging through the things that the porters had stacked against the wall beside his curtained off bed. Soon he had two shields of different sizes and his other trainer. It had been the one Otto used when they sparred. He couldn’t help smiling as he slid his hand around the hilt.
“Here.” He pushed a shield over to Wolfgang. “Now to find a good place. My quarters are really too close for good combat.”

I don’t have much advice, being in a similar situation myself. However, the thing that helps me the mostis just talking through plot holes and concepts. If you don’t have someone who can be a sounding board for you (in “real” life), I think most of us KeePers would be happy to be that. It’s nice to hear other opinions at the developing/editing stages. Also helpful is having accountability that just keeps me writing even if it’s terrible… I haven’t used that tool in a while and my drafts have suffered.
Whaley is talking about doing a writing call where we can work on our drafts together. I would love to have calls like that on a semi-regular basis, with specific writing groups. I know not everyone can attend that sort of thing, but it’s hugely helpful.

Lol. He might need to learn to notice details if he’s going to lead a rebellion.
Also don’t remember if they already talked about family. Maybe I need to keep better track of details.
I kind of spoke for Wolfgang, but I tried to write it so you could change his lines as you like.
Wilhelm
“Reinhard is…?” Wilhelm looked back from hanging his great sword above the fireplace. He left the question of “highest honor” alone. Wolfgang’s nation was beyond his desire to understand.
The window to his right was dark with a lavender evening. The curfew bell would probably toll soon. Unfortunately, Wilhelm was no longer tired. Adrenaline was running too high in his blood for sleep to come any time soon.
“Reinhard is my brother. My older brother…” Wolfgang was still standing beside the table, talking as if they had all the time in the world. Wilhelm relaxed until his weight was balanced evenly and his breath was soft.
“I have an older brother too. Otto. He’s a squire of the body now, one of the bachelors. He is stronger than I, but I can usually win a bout or two. Speaking of which-” On impulse, he pulled out a training sword, one almost identical to his arming sword except for being blunt, and spun to face Wolfgang.
“Would you like to fetch your sword and have a bout of our own?”

I’m amused that Wolfgang hasn’t connected the dots, especially considering Wilhelm’s 11th cent clothing, rooms, and culture. XD I know he thinks it’s impossible, but something should be tickling his subconscious by now.
Wilhelm
Either this boy was confused or Wilhelm was. Or perhaps both. The idea that knights were antiquated brought Wilhelm’s eyebrows together in a frown.
“I think this wëralt, this dominion of man between the heavens and the grave, is perhaps too large a place for one competition. My people would not travel such a distance for a game.” He took the opportunity to take his sword from Wolfgang. His heart beat steadier once there was no danger of his head getting lopped off in a misfortuneate swing. “It would be interesting if we could, though. Is your sword made for these games?”
Hot Milk+Brown Sugar+Vanilla+Ginger+Cinnamon=All the comfort this world can offer.
They totally are!
Wilhelm
Wolfgang’s second swing was more controlled, although it still sent Wilhelm’s heart up in his throat. He forced his voice into a level calm.
“Ah. That’s better… It depends on the armor, but yes. There’s little use in a weapon that can’t reach your enemy.” Once more, he edged back to give Wolfgang more room. “So he fights tournaments? Is that was the Olympics are?”
It was a little disappointing, but then again, considering the political importance of tourneys, a good champion of that sort was good to have around. Even if he wasn’t a hero.

Aha! I finally got back on here.
Here’s the sketch of Cass.

Hot Milk+Brown Sugar+Vanilla+Ginger+Cinnamon=All the comfort this world can offer.
Ahh! He’s epic. I’ve never imagined him wearing fancy/volumous clothes before. He looks quite royal in them. The freckles turned out cute. You got his facial structure very well! It’s been one of the hardest things to find for some reason.
Thank you for drawing him!
I do have a drawing of Cassion, but it was just an initial portrait sketch so I didn’t share it because I wanted to do something more involved. I’ll go look for it.
