If you clicked on this topic because of the interesting title, I feel obliged to tell you first off that this is not about the practice of fire starting 🔥
Sorry to disappoint you, but, please, stick around!! 😉
Today I have a simple question for y’all:
How do you go from an semi-fleshed-out idea to a real plot? How do you build a bridge from a s…[Read more] -

Okay, so last night I got this amazing idea. At least I think it sounds amazing. But my problem is, it also sounds a bit cliche.
The problem is, I don’t get out much. Honestly, I’m pretty picky about what I read, so modern secular works are very rarely added to the list, and I am pretty clueless about what’s actually on the shelves. I know I…[Read more]

Hey @elfwing,
Here are my two cents. When I write emotional scenes I try to think about where the character’s hands are and what they’re doing, as well as other facial cues. Like others have mentioned, you don’t necessarily  need to show tears to show someone is sad. For example, the character scratches the bridge of their nose, avert’s thei…[Read more]

HELLO MY KEEEEEPERS!!! SO! I am currently drafting Project Garden as you know, and I have discovered that I am seriously Pantsing it. Like…legit. I’ve got ideas and obviously some plot and storyline but it’s just like…writing whatever comes which is honestly hard most of the time and easy sometimes. SO WEIRD!
ANYWAY!! I’m wondering how…[Read more]

Okay, y’all, so I recently finished my YA fantasy novel.
*cues the high-pitched screams*
But my next project is a middle-grade novel featuring a 12-year-old MC who gets herself into all sorts of scrapes.
The problem is, I’m not naturally a humorous writer. It’s something I’m trying to work on in this story, true, but a very not funny writer…[Read more]

Hello, one and all! For those of you who are newer, we used to have some topics called “Writer’s Corner” or something like that, but I’m far too lazy to search for the previous ones or consult how many of these we have been through, so we can just start a new one.
This thread is just a place for off-topic chats, where we can talk about our day or…[Read more]

GodlyFantasy12 replied to the topic Characteristic Lines in the forum General Writing Discussions 4 years ago
Can we get this up and running again with brand new lines from characters? I still don’t really have many….but maybe we can expand this to be lines of not just dialogue but just very short bits of our books?

I’m not sure this is really counted as ‘advice’ or not, but once I was talking to my dear friend Elfwing. Now, she’s great at sticking with her world and exploring it in different books, kind of like Tolkien does. I, however, am the exact opposite. For me, there are just so many worlds…[Read more]

Whoa, lots of awesome responses – one thing I’ll add is that it can be nice to focus on more than just one sense. If you usually describe the way the tears burn in the back of your character’s eyes, then mention the way the tears glint in the moonlight. If your habit is to describe how hoarse your character’s voice is, then show their…[Read more]

I just got here and I’m probably quite late, but with describing characters crying, you can use less common bodily responses to strong emotion then just tears. Things like a lump in your throat, trails of watery snot coming out the nose, dry heaving. This could just be a me thing, but sometimes I hear a soft popping noise in my ears when…[Read more]
