Mandarin or Cantonese? Either way, consider me impressed. I grew up in China and to this day can’t read more than 10-20 characters lol I’m conversational but can’t read the characters

@merieshenanigans If you like audiobooks, there are some good ones on YouTube. That’s how I get through some of my harder texts faster because I can multitask that way. I’m “reading” Silmarillion via YouTube rn while I pack for school.

@morwen Welcome to KP! Homeschoolers who are obsessed with LOTR should basically be one of our names on here lol. I’ve been here for a while but have also been inactive most of that time.
You’re going to find a lot of MBTI enthusiasts here, my sister ( @aliaetter ) and I included.
Do you have a current project you’re working on writing-wise (I didn’t see you answer this yet but I may have missed it and if so I’m sorry for asking again lol)?
What’s your preferred genre to read and/or write in? I’m guessing fantasy from all the LOTR comments.

@merieshenanigans I love CS Lewis, but I are you sure you want to admit to not reading Tolkien on here? That could be a dangerous admonishment (jk but seriously you need to get the audiobook for it or something lol)

@e-k-seaver Possibly. When I first started on here I had similar problems with sending replies but that was 3 years ago so I’m not completely sure if it is a new user thing (where the moderators are just taking extra precautions with new people) or if it’s the actual site.

@e-k-seaver yeah it takes KP a minute to load replies and sometimes you end up pushing the button too many times and it overloads the system, other times it posts it a gazillion times. It takes some getting used to lol

@r-m-archer It’s interesting that you found the Hobbit boring; it was originally a bedtime story so it was meant for younger audiences whereas The Lord of the Rings was Tolkien’s precious (pun intended) to prove that all his world building and whatnot could be incorporated into an actual work.
I would probably choose Tolkien (because I struggle with descriptions) or Doyle (because I love mysteries but I can’t write them very well) and I think I could learn these things from both of them.

@dekreel Sorry, I just saw your question to me. I would be perfectly fine being in the story as Alia’s sister. But don’t feel pressured to put me in. I know I’m joining this whole thing late. I’m excited to read it when you’re done!

My mom told me that I used to sleep 12 hour nights from the day I came home from the hospital, so it is completely possible that this child could be sleeping soundly enough the whole time. I would just also mention cushioning inside the false bottom for the baby or else it may not seem as believable, especially if there is a lot of running and/or talking above a normal speaking voice. (Also, no matter what time period you’re writing in, healers and apothecaries probably would have something to make the child sleep longer and deeper if the guardian went in asking about something for their ailing child–chamomile or herbs or something along those lines probably)
I would worry, though, about a child under a stack of books unless the wooden crate was reinforced with something. Also, books are heavy and a 3 month old child isn’t light either. (Maybe you already have this part figured out) How many people are carrying the crate? If it’s only one then is there some sort of counter leverage to make it possible for them to carry such a load? Is it on a wagon? On wheels like a suitcase? Just strapping it to your back is going to get tiresome after 10 minutes or so.
Last thing (for now), it makes sense for you to want to get all the details right for a minor character. A writing class I took once said, “treat each character as though they think they are the main protagonist.” It makes sense if you think about it. If you were living in a story right now and your bff was the MC, would you know it? Or would you think it was about you? It might sound a little self centered, but humans are addicted to stories. They know the concept of stories so well that they sometimes begin to see themselves in them as the MC in the story of everyday life.
