Linyang Zhang replied to the topic non-typical critters for stories in the forum Fantasy 3 years, 4 months ago
@hallie-jean Ah, it’s been a long time since I’ve read Percy Jackson… It is by that new Riordan press, though, right? The one with all the mythology YA retellings?
To be honest, if I were to redo mythology, I’d do Chinese mythology, because that’s my personal favorite, heh.

@hallie-jean Ah, no, actually! That sounds very fun, though! XD

@elfwing Mm yes ducks would make such cute spies. My guards would definitely let down their guard for them. If I had guards.
And yes, eat the chickens. Better than eating the horse, heheh.
And geese are absolutely terrifying they would definitely make very good watchdogs. Or turkeys. Forget peacocks turkeys would do more than just be decoration.

@elfwing How about…chickens? There seems to be an underwhelming amount of chickens in fantasy except in cooking.
And ducks. And geese.

These are incredible! Have you thought about published some poems on the KP blog? I did it once, with the poem The Journal.  You should totally do it!!
Also, welcome to KP! Feel free to join any topics that you want. Do you only write poetry or do you write fiction/nonfiction too?

Ugh, I totally get what you’re talking about! Sometimes daydream about my other books while writing a blah one, and I’m like “why am I even writing this??”
So I’d say go for it.  If you got problems, face ’em head-on. That way, you’ll be able to get over the problem more quickly. And as for your idea, I’m loving it!!! I’m per…[Read more]

@kathleenramm Secret identities —- your works sound lowkey like Durarara!, which has quite a bit of that around the climax.
Hmm…for me I find myself pulling more light novel tropes, usually, such as getting hit by a truck, white curtains blowing in a classroom, fireworks festivals, etc…. I watch too much anime…
Um…I use “the quest” a…[Read more]

@joy-caroline That sounds awesome! I’m all for parallels! Sounds like it would be hard to pull off but if you could do it, that’d be really good!

Undoubtedly, most definitely, undeniably dark and brooding love interests… 😐
They’re just so amazing, you know? And even if he isn’t the love interest, he’s probably gonna be a side character.
Also, hate-to-love romances are pretty amazing.
So ya, to some it up, romance tropes are most common in my WIPs… hehe!

What’s the most common trope you use in your writing? Chosen one, love triangle, damsel in distress, old wise man, tragic backstory, secret identity, etc.
The most common trope I use in my stories is most definitely the secret identity trope. Without even realizing, I end up with three characters with secret identities in pretty much every story I…[Read more] -

@keilah-h Of course! One of my favorite books, East of Eden, is a retelling of Cain and Abel, and I love it to pieces. Your methods sound so cool! What stories do you usually choose?

Linyang Zhang replied to the topic Character Arc chat in the forum Characters 3 years, 4 months ago
@kathleenramm Ah, farmer/shepherd meaning Cain and Abel, haha… I didn’t realise I was writing a retelling of the first murder until I was almost done. So…
Yes, reflective character arcs are so good with foils and things… Those always strengthen themes the best, I think.

That sounds like a beautiful story! I love stories that explore themes and struggles but always have a light of hope from God. Those are the most impactful and memorable stories for me.
How did you get the idea for the story?
Those parallels inThe Mafia of Heather Flights sound so interesting. I watched one…[Read more]

ella replied to the topic Questions on drafts and beginnings… in the forum General Writing Discussions 3 years, 4 months ago
Hey Hallie! Good question! A first draft is the first written version of your book. For me, I like to write all my words at once, then edit it afterwards. I always try to edit while I’m writing, but that’s not a great habit to build, because it can make me pretty discouraged. And like @devastate-lasting said, notes would be good to…[Read more]

@kathleenramm Positive character arc…what’s that…
I used to not think about character arcs but hey, now I kind of do.
I know I have some planned but the only one I can think off of the top of my head that I’ve actually written is Rainan Streamgate’s negative character arc. Which, honestly, turned into a farmer/shepherd story more than I…[Read more]

Hey, so I was recently inspired by Allison’s recent article delving into Iron Man’s character arc, and it made me curious if any of you have writing positive character arcs before.
And if so, why you did it, how it went, etc. You know, just a chat about character arcs and maybe some tips you’ve learned from your own personal experience.
So…[Read more]

@hallie-jean Glad I could help! To be honest, I have an outline too, but if my characters want to go somewhere else, I let them and forget the outline completely.

Linyang Zhang replied to the topic Questions on drafts and beginnings… in the forum General Writing Discussions 3 years, 4 months ago
@hallie-jean Me, I write my first drafts as how I expect my story to be, except really really in need of editing. That is, when I’m on paper. My paper things aren’t good enough to be shown to the world. On PC I just write and try to aim for quality.
First draft I think means the first time you write a story through before you edit it. And I think…[Read more]
