I might be able to help kinda. I second Loopy’s question about what kind of tragic, and also, what type of music? More gentle (piano, violin, gentle guitar vibes) or upbeat (pop type I guess? Idk, steady, catchy beat.)

March 10, 2026 at 4:49 pm #211227Well, he ends up in the Nazi S.S. through some bad choices in his younger days, then has his salvation arc and finds out that his childhood sweetheart is Jewish. So he loves her but can’t marry her… and then he has to leave. So tragic and sad and separated and even him dying sort of song would fit.
as for the type of music, I was looking for something systematic and maybe musical like, but at this point I’ll take just about anything. (so long as it fits)

March 10, 2026 at 4:50 pm #211228@ellette-giselle ooooo that sounds like an intriguing story!
Gerald handled that. You don’t question Gerald. (if you know you know)

March 10, 2026 at 4:53 pm #211231If one dies, I say See You Again by Grey Havens. It’s a theme for several relationships in my books. Deeply comforting, focusing on the the “there wasn’t time for etc.” regret. I personally love the Autumn Sessions version, but there’s not really a difference.
Not entirely tragic, but absolutely possibly applicable, is Carry the Fire by Andrew Peterson/Ben Shive. The original song was partially inspired by the pain of loss within a relationship. My Love has Gone Across the Sea is also a lovely little song in the tragic love vein, and there are many versions so one might fit better than others.
Also, for broken longing for heaven, Paradise by Grey Havens is fiting. Theme song for one of my characters who dies prematurely.
And! A song about heaven that’s practically a lullaby: Dream of Heaven by Anthony Tremble. So much backstory behind this song. It seems to have been published by the artist’s family around the time he died of leukemia. It’s not really about a relationship though, so probably won’t work. Just thought I’d share. 😉
You have listened to fears, child. Come, let me breathe on you... Are you brave again? -Aslan
March 10, 2026 at 4:55 pm #211232Ah. I see it is not about dying early though. Hmm.
Pioneers by 4 King and Country? It’s not tragic though it’s about facing the estrangements of time. My family loves it.
Other folkies probably have more fitting suggestions. I’ll keep on the look out, though.

March 10, 2026 at 5:09 pm #211233@ellette-giselle cool!!

March 10, 2026 at 6:12 pm #211235Nobody try to assassinate me please, but I think I might have just maybe reconfigured a certain sci-fi book out of YA and into upper middle-grade/young youth and it is so beautiful now and everything works so shockingly well I might be replotting the whole thing. Maybe. If I go with it.
It is really beautiful.
*Hysterical laughter*
But I also got clearance/direction from one of the official people on YWWs over what to focus on right now so this whole detail doesn’t even really matter that much at the moment as I won’t be major WIP writing for some time–just mainly focusing on my writing voice and polishing wordcraft until I get a better handle on life. And yet this might change the whole feel of my future work if I decide to go with it.Anyway.
If you didn’t understand that mildly sleep deprived word dump, here’s some cookies for the effort. Thanks.

Not entirely sure why this was so funny to me, but congratulations on making me snort-laugh.

March 10, 2026 at 7:23 pm #211237Never Love an Anchor – The Crane Wives (I think this one fits what you described best maybe but also I will share some bonus songs.)
Eleanor – Samuel Lim
you would love it here – quiet thrill, Joel Ansett
Pull – Joel Ansett
Honeybee – Steam Powered Giraffe
Hope at least one of those are helpful:]

March 10, 2026 at 9:49 pm #211239Same Same Stars by Sleepy Man Banjo Boys would be perfect for that! I have more too, (you aren’t the only one with a tragic couple XD) but I haven’t eaten dinner yet. I’ll send them later.

March 10, 2026 at 10:36 pm #211240If I find anymore, I’ll let you know. Idk if any of these are what you’re looking for, and they all have very different vibes.
- Pieces by Rob Thomas
- Message in a Bottle by Livingston
- The Last Goodbye, an end credit song from The Hobbit
Yes, I know the last one you probably read and doubted me, but hearing the lyrics, I always imagined it as the sorrowful farewell before a soldier went to battle again. It doesn’t mention love, but the soft music and the slightly echoey voice of Billy Boyd singing it makes it feels like he’s all alone, mind wandering over the adventures he had before, and longing to be there “under cloud, beneath the stars” to “turn at last to paths that lead home”. It applies to the contest of The Hobbit but it also can apply to other things as well. Give it a chance.
Message in a Bottle might not fit, idk, but it’s someone broken, mourning over the one they lost, but still holding on to the memories. Their message in a bottle is the remnants of the memories they once had, and life they wished they had with their love.
This one I doubt will work the most, but I’m adding it anyway. Pieces is like someone both blaming themselves and the one they once had, trying to hold on, but everything is in pieces. They feel lost, they wander in the song, in the end they seem to resign themselves to the fact they can’t hold on despite their begging.
Let me know if this was helpful at all.

March 10, 2026 at 11:14 pm #211241*pulls out binder* Okay, here goes!
First off, Same Same Stars, like mentioned above. This song makes my dad cry
Who Wants to Live Forever -Postmodern Jukebox cover (It’s West Side Story style
which I’ve never seen XDand the singer has an incredible voice. I love this song)They Can’t Take That Away From Me -Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong (This would probably fit your time period too)
I think those three would work the best, but these are good too:
The Ghost of You -Postmodern Jukebox 40s style cover (This really only works with a death though)
Paint it Black -either the original by the Rolling Stones or Robyn Adele Anderson’s cover; both are great.
Deep in a Dream -Frank Sinatra
I hope this helps!
If not I think I have more.?For our Blessed Lady's sake, bring us in good ale!?
March 11, 2026 at 10:43 am #211243Why didn’t I ask you guys sooner!!!! The good thing is I have only heard of about 10% of these, so there may be a chance some of them work!!!! Yippy! I shall listen though them while I clean the house later today. Thank you all so much!!!!!!!
