Wren
She narrowed her eyes at him. “Which military? I thought you were a student.”

“The National Civil Patrol.” He spread his hands wide, palms up like a shrug. “I am a student. I just also volunteer with the local military for civil service and emergency response. It’s a good program.”
He could feel himself making traction in the conversation, although he wasn’t sure where it was going. Just that he was headed there. It gave him a sense of confidence that also knotted his gut with worry.

WrenSomething about this boy made Wren’s journalist instincts scream that he was hiding something. Everyone had secrets, of course, but she felt that this one may be more interesting. She resisted the urge to pull out her notebook again, knowing that tended to make people more hesitant around her. She found herself wishing for Veronica again.
An idea struck her. She sat back down next to the boy and spoke a bit more quietly.
“I’m not just writing for the school newspaper. I’m aiming bigger. City news, maybe even the front page. I want to get locals worried about the state of the school so that there’s pressure for change. And you and I want the same thing, right? A school that’s safer for the students. If I’m going to be investigating everything that’s been going wrong here, I may be putting myself at risk. I could use my own security.” She nodded to him and glanced again at the knife. “Or at least an ally. What do you say? Are you willing to help me?”

Reuven
“Maybe.” He bit his lip. “I would not be a good choice for personal security. I have work outside of school, so I can’t stick around much. I’m also not in any of the cliques, so I wouldn’t be a very influential ally. I could identify some good witnesses for you though, if you need interviews.”
He did not like the words ‘city news’ and ‘front page.’ He had been in the newspaper before as an unidentified figure standing beside a bombed-out apartment, and one other time in an unfortunate article on NCP efforts. That was back when it was just him and his dad to worry about. His mind tracked back to where his cousin was still dodging about, directing his team, with more confidence than Reuven had seen for a long time. He was going to have a headache when he got home.
“Hey, Reuven, what’s up?” A kid from math class sat down on the bleachers bench above theirs. Reuven looked back with a shrug.
“School newspaper.”

Wren assessed the unfamiliar student for a moment, thinking about starting a new interview, before shifting her attention back to the other boy. Since she hadn’t gotten his name, she now referred to him as Anonymous in her head, a common name in the work she did. He looked stressed.
“Alright, well thank you for the interview and if you would like to share any more information later, come find me.” Out of her pants pocket, she pulled a business card and handed it to him. Anonymous raised one eyebrow at her as he took it. It read:
Wren Tallow
Investigative Journalist
Office Address: 407 E. Pink St, Linmaus, Brimland
Locker #36She then brushed her hair out of her face and looked about the room.
“And I wouldn’t mind that tip about good people to interview next, if it’s not too much trouble.”
I did not originally mean for Wren to be this socially awkward but I’m enjoying it.

May 11, 2026 at 10:34 pm #211828@beth-torres I never expressed to you how absolutely delightful that Maverick update was! Shame upon me! Forgive my tardiness. Your character is iconic and so much fun to read about. <3

May 12, 2026 at 10:00 am #211837I could see this being very amusing if she caught Dante and Rory. I feel like someone would end up dead or scared out of their mind…..

May 12, 2026 at 10:15 am #211838@ellette-giselle I have been wondering about those two
⭐️World's Slowest Writer⭐️
May 12, 2026 at 10:31 am #211839you could have her stumble upon them. I doubt Dante would talk to her (maybe he would, idk, he’s your guy) but I know Rory likely would out of ignorance, and it could be funny especially if Dante didn’t want him to.
We could say Leo went to fix something unless @koshka wants to join us.

May 12, 2026 at 10:45 am #211846Maybe. We’ll see where Reuven directs her. It may be a bit difficult to get her into the basement. Unless you want to have the two of them to leave the basement first.

May 12, 2026 at 10:50 am #211847If you want, Marcel could give her the scoop on all the violence going on. He was in the basement previously and knows people with stab wounds go down there to chill. He could mention it.
May 12, 2026 at 10:53 am #211849@whalekeeper lol ok. Still no guarantee it will work out since I’m still figuring out Wren’s character but we can give it a shot. @ellette-giselle

May 12, 2026 at 10:55 am #211851Wren doesn’t have to do that. Just an option in a sea of options
May 12, 2026 at 10:58 am #211852We shall see what Reuven does and then we shall see what Wren does. I like the idea and I hope it works.

May 12, 2026 at 11:03 am #211855sounds good!

I don’t know why this made me laugh so hard.
We authors are all so messed up when we say things like this all chill. XD
