@savannah_grace2009 I will agree with the others and say that that isn’t too graphic. It’s not descriptive and it kinda paints a vaguer picture. But everyone is different…some people are more sensitive and others are less sensitive. But again, I don’t think it’s graphic at all, so you’re good. <3
It’s hard to find that happy medium. I don’t want to be too vague, and I want to show the character’s pain and how it affects them. But I don’t want to be graphic. Does that make sense? If you don’t mind, could you share one of the abuse scenes in your book so I can see how other writers are doing it?

Hmm, well, in the novel I just finished I never really incorporated an actual scene of it happening…I kept things very vague, and kinda just hinted that Riker had been through abuse. Like, for the scene where I fully began to reveal what Riker went through, I did vague things like this👇
He wasn’t scared of the dark, no, he was scared of what it reminded him of. Darkness let memories seep in…memories he didn’t need nor want to remember.
Riker’s shaking hands rose to his left cheek, touching the fresh wound…the new scar.
Riker shook his head and blinked several times.
He continued down the ladder. He was almost near the bottom. Not too much further. He…he could make it. He had to.
“Riker, are you alright?” Ezekiel called, already down, looking up the ladder.
Riker gritted his teeth and shoved back memories. “I’m fine.”
Oh, he was far from fine. The darkness…the tight space…it reminded him of much. Too much.
“I don’t see what anyone else sees in you. I wanted a son that would be the greatest gift I could ever have. I wanted a son that would make me proud. I wanted a son I could love. Instead, all I got…was you.”
Riker tripped off the bottom rung and stumbled away from the ladder, still surrounded by darkness, dizzy, and trembling from head to toe.
His head ached and reeled from the memories…the flashbacks.
Riker collapsed against the wall and groaned.
Fin stepped off the ladder. He ran to Riker and crouched down beside him, squeezing Riker’s shoulders gently.
Riker moaned. He didn’t want to be touched.
For other characters, like “The Bois”, I still try to keep it vague but definetely more hinted at/talked about, kinda like this👇
Reuben tried to draw with his left hand, hand shaking, and cradled his younger brother with his other arm.
His fresh injuries, already beginning to bruise, protested at Wolfgang touching them, but Reuben wouldn’t push his brother away.
“Why do they have to be so mean!? We-we’re just trying to do the right thing, and Mutti and Father…they…they…they hurt us!” Wolfgang cried, tears coursing down his cheeks in droves.
Reuben wrapped his arm tighter around Wolfgang.
Wolfgang sniffed and looked up at Reuben, their matching blue eyes meeting. “…Can we…can we never be loved?”
Reuben released his pencil and wrapped his arms around his brother. “Oh, Wolfgang…”
Wolfgang sobbed into Reuben’s shirt.
Reuben held him closer, even though it hurt. He’d never let his brother go…not for anything or anyone.
As Frida had said, she’d left Felix to “deal with them”…and “deal with them” he had…especially Leo.
Reuben glanced at his oldest brother who sat on one of the beds, Joshua tending to the wounds their father had inflicted. Leo winced as Joshua pressed a cloth against his chest. “Shh, I’m almost done…hold still.” Joshua whispered, softly chided, even

I wanna rant about a character that I haven’t talked about in what feels like FOREVER…XD
Here we gooooooooo, my beloved Nathan 💖
(i love this character more than I realize half the time XD I would consider him the first character I wanted to write a novel for…even if his novel is on the backburner for now bc it still has a lot of plot holes, haha. I love him so much tho😍💖🥰)
Main Character in Love’s Sacrifice; Side Character in other Novels
Nathan James Meijer
23 years old; approx. 5’9″. Curly blonde hair, pale complexion, bright blue eyes. Average height and slightly muscular build.
Nathan’s story began July 31st, 1753, born to a poor Irish couple, James and Sophia Meijer, as the youngest of five.
Life was hard financially but amazing in every other way. Nathan was loved by older siblings and doting parents who did everything in their power to teach their children about Christ. His parents loved him and his siblings with a love that was unmatched and did everything to provide for their kids…everything.
Nathan loved his family and loved his life, and they all knew that nothing and no one could take what they had.
Or so they thought.
At the young age of 12, Nathan’s life changed drastically when the Royal Army took him away from the only life he had ever known. There was no reason to take the small child other than the fact that the Army wanted a drummer boy, and Nathan was the one they took.
The last memory he has of his siblings is seeing their tears as he was taken away.
The last memory he has of his father is his father trying to fight back, telling the Army to take him instead of his beloved Nathan.
And the last memory Nathan has of his precious, beloved mother, whom he was always the closest to…is his mother begging to have her baby back…his beloved mother screaming his name as he was dragged away from the only life he had ever known.
In the first few weeks of his time in the army, he met Dawson, a boy only five years older than himself, and the two became inseparable, Dawson taking the young Nathan under his wing and protecting him no matter the cost to himself.

He sobbed.
This place was so big and loud and cold and scary. He wanted his brothers and his sister. He wanted Papa and he wanted Mama.
Sitting on a stump, Nathan sobbed even harder. Everyone had simply been walking past in the last few hours, not even giving the sobbing child a glance.
He wanted to go home!
Another heartrending sob escaped. His arms ached from carrying the heavy drum and his legs hurt from marching.
He wanted to go home to Mama and Papa!
Shuffling sounded, and Nathan wiped away his tears and snot with his uniform sleeve. His uniform hung too loosely as well, so he was always tripping, which made Colonel Hitchens very angry.
“Hello there.”
He nervously looked up, expecting Hitchens, but instead, he met bluish-gray eyes. “Uhm…uhm…Hi…” He whispered, burying his face back into his uniform.
But the man grabbed his arms, stopping him. Nathan waited for a blow, but none came. “I won’t hurt you…you must be the new drummer boy. What’s your name?”
“…Nathan. Nathan James Meijer…” He whispered, his heartbeat beginning to go back to normal.
The man smiled. “Hello, Nathan.” The man stood and gave Nathan a playful bow. “Sergeant Dawson Thomas at your service.”
Nathan laughed. “You’re silly…”
The man smirked. “Is that so?”
Nathan nodded and giggled. “Yeah. I’m 12…how old are you?”
Dawson’s eyes went wide, and his mouth formed into an “O”. “Well, what do you know? Me and you aren’t too far apart then, are we? I’m 17.”
“Really!?”
Dawson laughed, smiled, and nodded. “Really.” He stuck out his hand. “Now, come on, are you hungry?”
Nathan nodded. He was very hungry. “Mm hm.”
Dawson smiled faintly. “Then come on then. Take my hand.”
Nathan hopped off the stump and did so. He clutched Dawson’s hand in his. He looked up, their eyes met, and Dawson smiled again. “Come on, kiddo, you’re with me now.”
Thrown into a world of dirt, cruelty, and military discipline, Nathan slowly began to lose any sense of what love is, and even Dawson’s care couldn’t replace the love Nathan’s parents and siblings had for him, and Nathan still believed that he couldn’t be loved.
In Love’s Sacrifice, Nathan is a 23-year-old young man who has spent over half of his life in the British Royal Army, stationed in Obadiah Creek, Virginia in 1776 (made up town, lol), where he meets the best friend of his life, David, and Nathan begins to finally feel…happy.
But their friendship is mostly secret, given that David is on the “Rebel” side of the war whilst Nathan is on the side of the crown of England.
But a tragic loss hits Nathan, and he’s more confused than before.
He and David may have been friends, but they were on opposite sides of the war.
He and David were supposed to be enemies.
They were enemies.
So why…
…why would David take the bullet that was meant for Nathan?
Why would David give his life for his enemy?
