Hey everyone, so Wings is a story I’m working on (and am probably going to end up having as another serial story on my blog), but I’m struggling with the first little bit. Is it engaging? What do you think of it? Where do you anticipate the story going? How do you feel about the characters?
Critique as brutally (*cough* Dark chocolate *cough*) a…[Read more]

Hey people!!! I finished my first chapter of Lioness (YA, futuristic speculative fiction), and I’d LOVE it if y’all could read and critique it for me!!! It’s about 2000 words long. And please please please don’t hold back on critiquing–I’m trying to become a better writer so I absolutely need to know what has to change. (
And besides, I can…[Read more] -

Gracie J. started the topic Fantasy Linkup in the forum Fantasy 3 years, 3 months ago
So…@devastate-lasting gave me a fantabulous idea the other day. She started up a topic called “Let’s Build a World.”
Well, I only fiddle with fantasy and worldbuilding, but I thought it would be cool to not only put in a little work but to also see everyone else’s worldbuilding skills…
So I started my first ever linkup. *insert nervous…[Read more]

So, technically this topic is much broader than the title suggests. Maybe something more like “Writing Different Cultures, Languages, Countries, Religions, Denominations, and Other Stuff We Don’t Know About.” We do have this fantastic topic here (https://kingdompen.org/forums/topic/database-for-information/), which is for more specific…[Read more]

Linyang Zhang started the topic Let's Build a World in the forum General Writing Discussions 3 years, 3 months ago
Aight, I saw this idea on another forum and decided to steal it as well…with some changes, perhaps.
In the real world there are many famous landmarks, both manmade and natural, that have become iconic sights known the world over. There’s the great wall of China, the moai statues of Easter Island, the Grand Canyon, the pyramids of Egypt, and so…

@william-starkey Something on how you build languages and how they reflect the cultures they’re attached to would be awesome, if you have the time. 🙂
(BTW, totally random question but some of the books you’ve added on Goodreads made me curious: Are you Calvinist?)

Heyooo!!!!! Ok. So I’m looking for books to read while hunkering down in quarantine… 😉
I’ve heard so many AMAZING things about Brandon Sanderson’s books, but I’m not sure which ones I should try first.
1) Do y’all have any suggestions for which of his books to read first?
2) Or any other random book suggestions that you absolutely ADO…[Read more]

Hi! I’m looking for a few writers who would be willing to write about developing fictional architecture, fashion, cuisine, and language (respectively). I’m prepping blog posts for a section of this year that I’ll likely be out-of-town and I’m finding that I have a lot of posts ideas for the intangible aspects of worldbuilding but I’m not so good…[Read more]

Hey peoples!!! I am currently in that “writing-the-first-chapter-that-turns-out-to-be-a-dud-FIVE-THOUSAND-TIMES” phase… I may be over-exaggerating a little, but I’m sure y’all have felt like that before… 😄

@epicaddie2 Yes! I love pretty much every time period, depending on my mood. I’ve written several books set during the Golden Age of Piracy–but Medieval and Victorian were my first loves! There’s also Regency and the Wild West that hold special places in my heart…and Colonial America…and Biblical fiction…and, yeah, all of them!
Apart from…[Read more]

Thank you and good morning to you as well. So far I am enjoying my time here on Kingdom Pen.
It definitely will be interesting moving all of my books. Especially since I have quite a few pre 1920’s ones which are more fragile.
My Lord of the Rings books have leather covers as well, which might be a bit difficult. I also hav…[Read more]

First, I want to bring attention to the fact that we do not, as of yet, have a “Mystery” sub-forum in the “Genre-Writing” category. I find this disconcerting.
Second, I want to pose a question to y’all. In light of mine and @godlyfantasy12‘s work in the mystery department, what would you say (as readers and writers) makes a consummate…[Read more]
