@kate-flournoy sorry I should’ve seen it a while back when you posted it the first time. I’ll check it out and tell you what I think. ‘K? Thanks

I’ll make a quick reply cuz I need to go soon, but here’s my answer.
I do bend the outline a bit but you can tell I follow it.
Yes! Character development can be improved by outlining. That’s probably the thing that made my theme come out even more

Don’t slam me that I didn’t put Jesus Christ. My point in that post was that these people did have failings. They failed more than once. But overall they were remarkable people. And just as good old Xavier says, “Just because someone stumbles and loses their way, doesn’t mean they are lost forever.”

When in doubt, follow my some of two favorite heroes: Captain America and King David. Analyze their lives. That’s what true heroes are.

I’m a pantser who has totally experienced the benefits of taking time to outline. It’s also some great “procrastinating” you can do! I usually just write the first scenes and first draft all based on the preconceived concept.
However, because I wanted to turn my lame superhero concept into something more emotionally satisfying (to the author not…[Read more]

My opinion on stories in general can be quite picky, but here’s what I think.
The whole thing sounds way too modern. It could literally be set in the age of exploration. Even though I hate setting and details, I think that maybe more references about time period things and clothing and stuffs like that would help make it more grounded in its…[Read more]

Cool. 🙂 The undead thing was actually a spur of the moment thing. It was (#1) the personality of the brother and (#2) the conflict of meeting someone you once knew but is completely changed that made me write the story. I’m totally a pantser 🙂

@kate-flournoy So what exactly is quality fantasy?
-
Hm… good question. 😛
I think it’s the kind of fantasy that isn’t full of stereotyped plot twists and characters who just toss magic around like it was nothing. It’s complex— believable. It has creatures no one has ever heard of before— in this case Naldo and Ingrim and Nervil, and beautiful moths that glow in the dark. 😉
It’s a fantasy…[Read more]-
Sounds awesome! I really love the fact that it’s full of hard-hitting themes and struggling/betraying stuff. I mean the chosen one (who’s usually an orphan) is so overused (even though I’m all for giving a stereotype and then psyching out the reader by flipping it). Fantasy, I believe, is written as a quality novel in a unique setting and unique…[Read more]

Well, better to aim high and fall short than to aim too low and reach it. 🙂
Yes, it definitely helps to come from a unique perspective and think about the facets that aren’t usually explored in fantasy. One thing I forgot to mention in my first post was the villains. You probably noticed that most fantasy villains (speaking generally) are the…[Read more]

Thanks for your comments. The idea behind this was something much darker. That one forum about vampires and zombies kind of made me think of this story I’d written.
You could think of him as a vampire now or something, but not an actual bloodsucker/scared of holy water kind of vampire. Just like an undead dude with superpowers kind of thing.
As…[Read more]

Glad to be of help.
It’s a really cool premise. Just keep on working away at it. Even when you have writer’s block and don’t want to sit down at the computer just grab a notebook and begin making diagrams about stuff! Character relationships, plot formation, character journeys, the list is endless (well mine is). Again, welcome to KP and I hope…[Read more]

Mark Kamibaya replied to the topic Zombies and Vampires ~ Yeh or Bleh? in the forum General Writing Discussions 9 years, 2 months ago
This is already an old topic, but I’ll speak out my opinion.
Vampires and zombies are associated with satanic evil stuff. So we shouldn’t write about them. You can use the idea of some undead person but using actual vampires and zombies have a bad connotation. And remember that to others watching their connotation trumps your motivation

This is a sort of dark story that I wrote a while back. Tell me what you think of it.
