Sam Kowal replied to the topic The Better Books Survey in the forum General Writing Discussions 6 years, 9 months ago
@daeus Great idea! It’s really easy to sort of fall into a rant about what you don’t like in fiction, at least for me. I didn’t find anything typo-related. I’d be happy to share it with some people. 😀
As part of the survey, do you then write the better book that the survey-taker has dreamed about? Or do you just leave them hanging? XD

@daeus 😀 That is a great article. The biggest difficulty with it, I have to agree with @that_writer_girl_99, is that it contains ‘writerly terms’ that the average reader wouldn’t understand. However, I don’t think that’s necessarily a problem; if you’re submitting it to a writing blog, there’s probably already an audience built up there used to w…[Read more]

@supermonkey42 😀 The dragons of Pen are against your rebellion. Beware.
(That scary dragon isn’t Stan, by the way. He’s the one that looks like a stuffed toy.)
OW! Stan, it was only an expressio—I said, OW!

@dragon-snapper firstly… ice cream.
*piles up barrels and barrels of ice cream in an old DRAGON*
*Flies with Stan to the top of a mystic mountain*
*Flies into the secret base, where all the rebels and heroes are having a party*
*hands out the ice cream*
Secondly… Ugh. I hate feeling disconnected from my book. Because its like… I’m not…[Read more]

Sam Kowal replied to the topic Weird Things People Tell Me 'Cause I'm a Writer in the forum General Writing Discussions 6 years, 10 months ago
@jenwriter17 XD Nice topic. It’s rather fitting for writers, since… ahem… people often tell writers strange things.
XD @kate-flournoy @dragon-snapper I know what you mean. Trying to tell people is like… hard.
The solution I came up with is to have a really simplified and parody-like synopsis all ready, which really isn’t very accurate but…[Read more]

@rochellaine 😀 That sounds interesting.
I haven’t read many Westerns, but I would read that.

@dekreel 🙂 I’m an ENFJ, or at least that’s what the MBTI told me… although a lot of the percentages were close.
The DISC test gave me an I-C. Too bad there wasn’t a U and then I could be an ‘I see you’
😀 And Stan…
Well, he breaks the tests.

@jenwriter17 😀 Nope. I’m not, but I will probably do so at some point today. I gotta read biology.
If anyone’s looking for a short book to read, by the way, check out Favorite Father Brown Stories by G.K. Chesterton. They’re very suspenseful. -

@dekreel 😀 Awesome!
I can’t wait to read it.
That’s fine with me that you switched me out as a character. I change characters sometimes too.
Stan and I will be sitting here waiting for it, munching on popcorn and raspberries

@valtmy 😀 Welcome to the bestistest place on the internet!
My dragon pal, Stan, says hi, too. 😀
Sadly, I do not watch really any anime. If I ever do though, I’ll look for your recommendations.
I’m a fantasy writer, so I thought your story sounded really cool. (So did Stan.)
Also, please do not try to mount any sort of INTJ rebellion. King…[Read more]

Sam Kowal replied to the topic Chapters in a First Draft in the forum General Writing Discussions 6 years, 10 months ago
@waterlily 🙂 Looks like you already got some great advice, but I’d say, if you actually don’t naturally add them, go ahead and just do what you’re doing.
I actually haven’t even thought of not adding chapter breaks, I usually have it at least roughly planned in my mind where things will be divided up.

Sam Kowal replied to the topic Howdy! in the forum Start HERE 6 years, 10 months ago
@aviantrail 😀 I agree. And it’s interesting how the cats are written as likable characters that you can still connect to, even though they’re four-legged miniature felines and not actually people XD
Wow, your story sounds really cool. Fantasy is my favorite genre, and I like political intrigue and maneuvering, too. 😀 A jaguarundi! Does that…[Read more]

@kaya-young XD XD NOo0
I was scared just thinking about that
Narnia is one of my favorites, I read it first when I was around seven and I’ve reread it a bunch of times since. Of course, I’m sure I’ll forget I ever read them soon. And I’m sure I’ll start having nightmares about parts of the Last Battle, and somehow the books will cause me great…[Read more]

@rochellaine Oh, that’s great. 😀
🙂 Yep, I didn’t expect you to want to try to keep things like my descriptions, especially because I don’t really have any experience writing Joshua’s voice, I just wanted to throw those in as examples.
Also, running quickly through scenes that don’t have much significance to the main story is a great way to…[Read more]

I like Star Wars, too. 😀 Also, I read several Warrior books a while back. I liked them, and I always thought it was funny how there was this epic fantasy cat world basically on the side of a country road and in someone’s back woods (the Thunderpath, right?)
What is your main book…[Read more]

@rochellaine Here |https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Ko4Su754S_pyYGy-mSM_wQy2viP_i5iA3reQCtjwi7A/edit | is a kind of sliced up version where I made the paragraphs and thoughts less rambling, to show you what I meant. @warrioroftherealm No, I don’t think that’s too cliche, although its definitely been used before.
It’s a great way to quickly and accurately send a message (from a relatively short distance). A funny way to subvert that would be to have the person shooting the bow be a horrible shot, and miss, and then either have to walk over to the arrow and…[Read more]

@rochellaine They’re not irrelevant, but having things about his street life pop up in his mind mostly when things in the scenes remind him of that life, and only things relevant to that moment, would help to organize his narration more.
I think readers will learn about why he acts the way he does simply by learning about what kind of person he…[Read more]

@skredder XD Nice. That sounds like something I would dive into eagerly, and then…slowly…get tired…of.
@jenwriter17 That is super cool! XD I would love to have gone to church with an author, just because of all the writing questions I could have asked in the parking lot. I haven’t heard of Merlin’s Blade, but I think I’ll go look it up 😉
