Ooh, Tor does unsolicited queries? That’s cool.
That sounds like a good plan. ;D
I’d suggest waiting until you’ve finished editing, because your page count (and thus spine width) might change as you edit. You won’t have a finalized page count until you do all the formatting. But I understand the antsiness. XP
Yeah. XD That’s…[Read more]

Agreed. I’ve published two short story collections and a standalone short that way, and I plan for the majority of my books to be done that way. 🙂
Ooh, a list would be cool. (Even if I don’t use it for this book, it could be handy for the future.)
Yeah. XD I often stink at marketing, and I haven’t gotten very excited about it with my…[Read more]

@seekjustice Thanks! 🙂
@gracie-j Probably indie, through KDP. I’ve considered doing this one traditional, since that’s something I want to do someday, this is a standalone so I feel like it would work well as an “experiment,” and I would love for it to get the reach that traditional novels get. But I also don’t want to wait to hook an agent…[Read more]

This sounds amazing. XD
Yes! I’m actually super, super, super excited to publish it; I absolutely adore it and I can’t wait to share it. XD But I have to get through editing first… Which hasn’t actually been miserable–I enjoy editing, particularly when I love the project–it just takes too long. XD But I’m already daydreaming about…[Read more]

@seekjustice All of those sound super cool! I especially like the idea of the first one, but that might be influenced by some of my recent reads that fall along similar lines, lol. Very cool!
I have two primary projects at the moment:
1) My editing project, which I’ll be setting aside shortly, is about a group of calligraphers whose…[Read more]

Oh boy… Well… The premise is that the main character of book one assassinates a neighboring kingdom’s ruler based on false information, which begins a chain of events that end up with three nations at war with each other. Each book follows a notable character in a different one of those three nations and the books occur simultaneously.
As…[Read more]

My outlining process has evolved in the reverse of yours. XD I used to be a hardcore pantser. I could not outline, it always took too long and stinted my writing, and I never liked the end result. But after way too many unfinished stories I decided to try outlining again and now I’ve realized I work a lot better with a fairly detailed outline. I…[Read more]

Hi, Elizabeth! We seem to have a lot in common!
- Words are, indeed, amazing. I wish I was better with using them, but I do love admiring others’ better skill with them, lol.
- I can’t play any instruments (I leave that to my dad and my sister; my dad can play I-don’t-even-know-how-many instruments, lol), but I’ve been singing my whole life. What…

@leon-fleming I’m… not sure whether to be flattered, amused, or just very confused at this title. XD
I really enjoyed The Hobbit the first time I read it. I was younger at the time. And I certainly don’t dislike it now, it’s just not tops on my list, lol. And I definitely agree that The Silmarillion is a legend, even if it can be difficult to…[Read more]

@kathleenramm Definitely! Maybe you could just be a student of the Inklings and learn from all of them. ;D

@kathleenramm I’ve been rereading The Lord of the Rings and I love it. I’m not so big a fan of The Hobbit or The Silmarillion (I found the former a little boring and the latter just complex and long, though I still appreciate them for their craftsmanship and stories), and I haven’t read much of his other work yet. But I love The Lord of the Rings. ^-^

@devastate-lasting Yes! Bradbury’s prose is amazing! I remember reading the first paragraph of Fahrenheit 451 and immediately pausing in awe because the fire motif was so strong already.
I’d choose Tolkien, though. His worldbuilding, his language-building, his characters and character relationships and focus on ordinary people… I would just…[Read more]

R.M. Archer replied to the topic What's a genre of fiction you want to write in, but haven't yet? in the forum Topic of the Week 4 years, 3 months ago
@kathleenramm I haven’t read a whole lot, but the short story Chronicles of Steele: Raven: Episode 1 by Pauline Creeden is good; I imagine the rest of the series is also. I also read Hoffmann’s Assistant by Renee Lauter (another short story), which wasn’t as deep or polished as it maybe could have been but was still enjoyable to read. I’ve also…[Read more]

The only one I’d like to try that I’ve never written before would be steampunk. Steampunk seems like it would be so much fun, and I love the style and tone! But I haven’t really had any steampunk-style ideas yet, so I haven’t tried it out.
There are other genres, though, that I’ve written in and just would like to do more and… don’t. Like…[Read more]

@reaganramm That’s a really cool song! It has a very Owl City-ish style, and your voice seems well-suited to the sound. I’ll have to check out more of your work!
