That sounds really interesting! The world where anyone could be insane is so cool and works so well with the MC’s desire for family. It sets up a really clear desire vs fear.
Where did you get the idea for Spirals?
I really love these kind of simple yet really intriguing premises. I tend to overcomplicate things in…[Read more]

@kathleenramm I’m gonna use the current arc of Thirteen Ways since the stakes are the clearest. Basic premise: they need to gather ingredients for a spell to vanquish a demon. If they don’t, then some friends and family are lost forever to the demon.
In order to collect the ingredients, they must defeat the guardians of some of the ingredients.…[Read more]

What’s the 2 biggest stakes in your story?
So I’m going to be using the story I’m writing with my siblings, because my solo novel that I’m currently working on is still a baby. The MC Bennet’s main goal in the beginning of the novel is to get enough money so he no longer has to steal for a living.
In the beginning, the two biggest stakes if he…[Read more]

@kathleenramm Good luck on your story! Yes, now I think I want to incorporate at least one delivery boy henchman into a future story. I love it when henchmen have distinct personalities and appearances. Makes the story much more fun.

I know! I think that’s the very thing that makes him so relatable. We sympathize with him because of all the mental torture he put himself through, but at the same we are annoyed with how mean and pathetic he can be.
It’s not a character you want to relate to because, who wants to be Colin? But his positive character arc gives hope for…[Read more]

That sound like a really fun and chill way to write. Just letting ideas flow as you write the novel.
Where you find you get the most story ideas from?
Following characters is the best right? So many fun and out-of-no-where ideas come to me when I do that. Plus writing is so much easier.
I’ve done it with outlined…[Read more]

Haha, that’s okay! Grace gave some great tips!
It’s cool how you just took up a pen and started writing stories when you were younger!
Funny, I don’t think I remember a time where I didn’t know what outlining was, I guess because I grew up in a family of writers. XD
It totally makes sense that you outline Biblical…[Read more]

@abigail-m Sorry this took so long. I’ll answer your questions now.
how likable are the characters?
Very likeable! I do like the three that you introduced here.
If you had to eliminate all but one character, what one would you keep and why?
I’d keep Anton because I’m a sucker for minor characters. But seriously, I wouldn’t eliminate any of…[Read more]

@kathleenramm I fully pantsed some works some months ago. It was terrifying. Like, usually I have no idea where things are going when I’m writing, but at least I have an outline as a roadmap. No, for this I had one sheet of paper covered with characters I wanted to be in it, and then another page for me to jot down ideas as I wrote.
And…[Read more]

After reading Grace’s most recent article on pantsing, it got me curious about how many on here are pantsers. And of those who are, if you have any techniques or tips you use to keep your story in order and not coming out as a complete mess haha. XD
I’m more of a meticulous planner, but I’m considering pantsing a short story so I’m looking for…[Read more]

@lewilliams I just looked up the Keeper of the Lost Cities series and it sounds really interesting. How are the characters? (I’m seriously considering ordering yet another book from the library lol)
That’s been happening a lot lately to me too recently. I used to stick up my nose to classics because I thought they were dull and…[Read more]

That’s interesting. It would be cool to look back through the book to find what exactly it was missing that made you unable to connect. That’s what I love to do when I read a book I don’t like. Pinpoint everything little thing that made me dislike it. It really helps me out with my writing.
Ooo, what book was the best book you’ve read…[Read more]

Lin replied to the topic Writing a conflicted character while getting readers to root for her? in the forum Characters 4 years, 7 months ago
@joy-caroline As someone who generally likes antagonistic characters I like her a lot already! Kind of reminds me of Caleb Trask, one of my favorite characters in all of literature, who is supposed to symbolize Cain. I think as long as you portray all of your above ramble clearly, then you should have no problem getting your readers to like her!…[Read more]

@godlyfantasy12 I don’t really have much to say, but I have a couple of movies to suggest for @gracie-j .
1) Knives Out. It’s a murder mystery that came out recently, I’d give it a strong PG-13 for language and stuff, but I really enjoyed watching it.
2)Â Batman Begins. Mm yes this one doesn’t have that much of a transition but it’s pretty g…[Read more]

Ooo, that sounds really cool. The vibe sounds like something I’d definitely be into.
Did you have any favorite characters in the book?
Animal behaviour books? Is there a reason, or do you just like to learn about animals? I’m intrigued haha. XD
