Snapper replied to the topic Balancing Dialogue and Description in the forum General Writing Discussions 9 years, 4 months ago
@holly-nelson-gray Aloha!
Dialogue I think is probably more important than description, though description is definitely important. Dialogue shows how the characters interact with each other, and it can also add a bit of setting as well. As for description, you can have some, just be sure to avoid info-dumps. I always skip those. I read a book…[Read more] -

@jadamae Haha! Yes, I know what you mean. “In Which I Fall in Love” isn’t spoilery at all, is it? (I’ve read a book with that exact chapter title.)

@daeus @graciegirl I’m done for now. My mom and I edited a short story, then I entered it into a contest.

Alrighty! Thanks everyone for your wonderful critiques! I have submitted the final draft into the contest, so we’ll see what happens. I’ll know on the 26 whether I’ve won or not. Again, thank you all!

Grinding to a halt after her long run across the court yard, Anne hesitates on the edge of the volleyball rink. Completely at a loss for how to play and not terribly willing to learn she digs a book out of her pocket and plops down in the grassy sidelines.
“Let me know if you need me to do something,” she calls absentmindedly as she dives into…[Read more] -

Thanks all!
After considering everything you all said, I decided I probably won’t keep them. I mainly just had them before because I don’t know. I had no reason really. They weren’t very good ones anyway. -

@anne-of-lothlorien This is great!!! You’re character in Ali is great! Even from the beginning I feel terrible that she has to go through that with her family. I can’t wait to see what happens next!

“That’s all right @cindygreen!” Anne calls out amiably. She lowers her voice to a stage whisper, “I don’t really know how to play either…”
She finds another ball, giving up Faith’s served one for lost. Throwing it in the air, she whacks it with the flat of her long dagger. Sailing speedily through the air, it approaches Cindy at an unbelievably…[Read more] -

@aratrea @bethanysinkyroses Thank you. I just ordered the paperback version of Ivy Rose’s ‘The Old River Road’ which should be here tomorrow after my root canal… looking forward to that, and knowing the fact that I probably won’t die from the pain will help me through.

@northener @graciegirl I’ve read a bit of the backstory, and I love the fact that Pippin and Diamond had a boy named Faramir, and he married Sam and Rosie’s girl, Goldilocks. Someday I’ll get round to reading it through. And the Silmarillion, but that is far and away currently.

And *takes deep breath* Here’s the short story.
I’m crazy.
I know that.
My mother shakes her head sadly as she closes the door. The dull click of the lock echoes in my head.
They say it’s for my own good. They say that I’m mad, a lunatic, a delusional fantasist. Locking me in here is supposed to protect me.
But I know the truth…[Read more] -

Thank you very much @graciegirl. You guys are all wonderful on here, and the enthusiasm means a lot to me. I’ve been a little discourage about my writing lately, because it didn’t seem to be coming from the heart, and then this… this is how I need to write. I mean, in all the flash fiction and short stories I do, the ones that I feel are really…[Read more]
