  • @ethryndal Yep! Actually I was going to guess Princess Bride, Count Rugen to Wesley on your quote, but I guess that’s not it.
How about, “Oh, look! The princess has a powder room!” (Bonus points to whoever guesses that one.)

  • @warrior-of-the-realm I think chordally, so I almost always start with the melody and fill in the words, tweaking the melody as needed. But that’s just me. I think it’s because when I come up with something instrumental, it already has a meaning to me, so I know what the words are going to be about and it’s not hard for me to finish it up by…[Read more]

@anne-of-lothlorien I wish we could get together and jam sometime. I love writing songs. Your lyrics look great! If you’d like to read some of mine sometime I’d be happy to share them.

  • @anne-of-lothlorien The second one is Gollum conversing with himself from The Hobbit.
@dragon-snapper Yes, the short villain from The Princess Bride is Vizzini. By the way, there is a book of The Princess Bride, which I highly recommend to anyone who liked the movie. It came first.
    Here’s one for y’all: “I had a dream once.”
    @Julia-r you’re not…[Read more]

  • @The-Bean I broke one of those stress balls once, too! Mine had gel inside. Colored gel. And I broke it on our couch, which was fantastic. Now I don’t play with those things anymore, because I always have a desire to pop them (it’s the same urge that makes me want to pop bubble wrap). @kate-flournoy, Silly putty is my go-to if I need to do…[Read more]

  • @warrior-of-the-realm I’ve been writing songs for about eight years, so I’ll give what advice on lyrics I can.
    1) Paradoxes are good. Contrast can inspire emotion in listeners. For example (this one’s a bit cliche, but in my opinion, can’t be overdone): contrasting things like our unworthiness and God’s gift. Jesus took on a crown of thorns, gave…[Read more]

  • @anne-of-lothlorien Having worked with preschoolers at church for the past few years, I could probably give you a few stories or snippets of dialogue if you want. One thing that I am impressed with is the diversity of personality even among small children. A lot of books tend to stereotype them as clueless, innocent, sometimes annoying little…[Read more]

  • I hit 42,000! I had a slight setback when my computer corrupted the document that my novel was on, and I spent about forty-five minutes thinking that I had just lost all 33,000 words of what I had written so far. (I started over from the beginning… then, praise the Lord, I found a backup file that had 30,000 out of my 33,000 words on it. On the…[Read more]

  • @gretald @ingredrd I’m working on planning a writers’ gathering for a Saturday in January. Any particular dates that would work best for you?

@anne-of-lothlorien I love The Princess Bride, How to Train Your Dragon, and Beyond the Mask (I actually have a good friend who worked on costumes for Behind the Mask– she was an extra in the ball scene, where Will and Charlotte are dancing together– next time you watch it, watch for a lady with a model ship in her wig, and that’s my friend,…[Read more]

  • @anne-of-lothlorien
I wrote my first few novels (if you can call them such– they were short) in first person, because I was writing about an imaginary perfected version about myself (I was nine, and that was pretty much all I wanted to write about), but then I switched to third person for a really long time. Finally, recently, I tried first…[Read more]

@daeus I’ll check with the other Ohio folks and see if those days will work for them, too. I’ll let you know about when the next Writers’ Gathering would be.

We’ll do another one in January, @winter-rose . Probably on a Saturday. Same location, same time. What are some dates that might work for you? Do you have any open weekends in January?

I’ve never actually tried to pull 50,000 words in a month before, but I’m not doing too bad so far. I’m at 24,000 words or something for two reasons: early mornings and previous typing training.
My story is…well, I don’t really know what genre to put it in. It’s not fantasy and it’s not historical fiction and it’s not science fiction because it…[Read more]

I would be able to participate in this kind of thing. I give an 8. Sounds like a good idea. It would be nice to be able to ask questions and receive immediate feedback. Keep me posted on this!

  • Hannah R. replied to the topic Have you read…? in the forum Book Discussions 8 years ago

Hey, is there anybody here who has read Les Miserables? I’m working my way through it right now and completely loving everything except the fifty pages about the Battle of Waterloo. 🙂
@anne-of-lothlorien I read The Princess and the Goblin and its sequel, The Princess and Curdie. I loved them both, until the very end of The Princess and Curdie,…[Read more]

For some reason there’s no “reply” option for the post I’m actually replying to. @daeus For Bible bee do you have to memorize a specified 600 verses, or are any 600 accepted? Did you qualify for Nationals? I doubt I’ll ever have time to do Bible bee, but it sounds like a great opportunity.

  • Okay, so I was hesitant to share this because I was afraid y’all would accuse me of not having a life, but I promise I do have a life outside of writing. I hit 10,000 words this morning and I’m a little beyond that now. (Not meaning that I wrote 10,000 words in one day, but since November 1st, I have written 10,000 words.) I promise I have a life. 🙂

  • @Hannah-krynicki I haven’t seen the Lost Colony play but it sounds fascinating!

  • Hannah R. posted a new activity comment 8 years ago

If you can forward the invitation that would be great. If she wants to come hang out with a bunch of random strangers, we’d love to have her. 🙂 Hope your Bible bee is successful. I’ve never done Bible bee before, but it sounds like fun. How has your experience with it been? What are the requirements?

    • Daeus replied 8 years ago

Ok, good. I’ll let her know about it.
As for the bible bee, I highly recommend it. The competition is very helpful in keeping me to a consistent schedule. Only problem is 18 is the age limit, so this is my last year. There’s a local and national competition (for qualifiers) testing both memory of passages and knowledge of the focus chapters of…[Read more]
