@sarah-h @kate-flournoy, How does it sound to take a week for each chapter? I realized that the chapters are kind of long and we might get more out of discussion if we take longer on each chapter. If we spend the first week on John 1 that will also give more people time to jump in if they want to. I’ll call some more people over. @bluejay…[Read more]

The Last Leaf was good. I like that O. Henry always has a twist in his stories, but none of the others stand out to me. I liked Rudyard Kipling’s Rikki-Tikki-Tavi, but I don’t think I’ve read any of his other short stories. Are there any that you recommend? @jess @sarah-hoven

@winter-rose the author is Dorothy Sayers. You might be able to find it online. I found it in a collection of short stories. Okay, while I’m on the topic of short stories I have to ask: has anybody read “The Ransom of Red Chief” by O. Henry? It’s probably my favorite short story of all time.

Hi @corissa-maiden-of-praise ! I tend to be a little late in joining conversations but I nevertheless extend to you my welcome. I hope you enjoy this site as much as I have!
I happened to notice that you titled your introduction “Greetings and Salutations”, which happens to be the same title I used when I first arrived at KP. So you’re not alone.…[Read more] -

Wow @bluejay, now I want to go to Australia! I used to be really into birds (to the point where I said I wanted to be a professional ornithologist), but I never saw that kind before. Ohio has some pretty neat birds, but their tails are all short. 🙂
What is the general climate of your section of the globe? Ohio is going through its hot and humid…[Read more] -

The Book of John is probably my favorite book in the Bible. Every time I read it I notice something new. But what strikes me every time is that, from a strictly literary point of view, it is extremely well-written. So I’m wondering if anyone wants to do a literary study of the Book of John with me. I’m going to start reading it next Monday (August…[Read more]

I dare you to write about a villain who communicates his evil plans through paintings and the hairdresser who stops him.
@winter-rose have you ever read the short story “The Inspiration of Mr. Budd”? It’s about a hairdresser who catches a murderer. Highly recommended.

I used this dare and wrote a 5,614 word story. Thanks so much.
I’m glad you were able to use the dare! Now I want to read the story 🙂

Tough question. I missed the entire previous discussion on mercy killings, so I have a little about that for later.
When is it right to kill? It’s a question that has haunted us for centuries.
I can’t say what the man in the movie did was right or wrong, but I could make a case for either way. If it’s right, isn’t that kind of like sacrificing a…[Read more] -

Ok, @bluejay , let’s see. I’ll give you a couple to choose from based on what you’re working on.
If you need an idea for a story to write, write about a king who hates his job and comes up with a plan to get himself out of it.
If you need a scene idea, throw a goat in there. Things always get interesting when there’s a goat involved.
Or if that…[Read more] -

@Daeus, I can help with the first stage, but I think I’d be better at the second stage. It sounds like an amazing story! At any rate, the synopsis has me completely intrigued. I would be glad to help in any way I can, and to do a swap.
I have a couple of novels that I could swap. One is called Fire and Wind. It’s long. It’s 100,000 words long.…[Read more] -

@C-C-lane I know I’m about the bazillionth person to say it (bazillion is a real number, by the way), but welcome to Kingdom Pen. I, along with many others, love to write medieval fantasy, and I know enough guitar that I can play most songs in the key of C. If it’s not in the key of C I use a capo. 🙂 I’m a pianist, and I love writing music. And I…[Read more]

In response to your comment about seeing the world in a different way, @kate-flournoy, what a great story that would make! Maybe I’ll have time to write it after I graduate high school and college and after my potential future kids grow up and then I retire from whatever job I might have and have tons of time on my hands. 🙂
And @daeus, you need…[Read more] - Load More
