Today I read the first couple chapters of Spinning Siver by Niomi Novik. It’s an adult fantasy book that I’m pretty sure is a retelling of Rumpelstiltskin.
So far I’m enjoying it! The atmosphere is really nice, and every time I read it it’s like I’m being transported into a magical winter forest. Â Although I’m only a couple of chapters in, I can…[Read more]

So as you’ve probably heard a million times by authors, is the importance of reading as a writer. But I’ve actually have learned way more about writing by talking about books I’ve read than actually reading the book. And besides, talking about books is probably one of a writer’s favorite things to do, even without all the benefits of improving…[Read more]

Kathleen replied to the topic What was the most difficult scene for you to write and why? in the forum Topic of the Week 3 years, 11 months ago
Oof, yes. XD I know those characters far too well.  Have you ever read a book with a character that you had a sneaking suspicion was the author’s favorite character? I feel like the try-hard comic relief characters are often those characters, but since the author likes the character so much they’re oblivious to it. XD Not sure if you’ve c…[Read more]

I think what you mentioned right there is the epitome of writing. Most likely all writers at one point or another write about situations we have no experience ever doing but write about it as if we did it just that morning. XD And it’s totally prevalent when writing banter between two characters wholly different from you. Their…[Read more]

Is it bad that I’ve never written romance in any form before? I love creating deep, meaningful, and complicated relationships, but never romance. Probably because I don’t read romance often, and I’m only seventeen so romance isn’t something I think about, like, ever. XD
But I can see how writing romance would be difficult.…[Read more]

What was the most difficult scene for you to write and why?
I’m not sure if this scene was THE hardest I’ve ever written, but it was definitely a challenge. The scene was a rooftop fight scene that I wrote at the beginning of this year. It was the first time I’d written a fight scene on a rooftop (or any rooftop scene, for that matter) and their…[Read more] -

I just watched AtLA for the first time last month, and as someone who was expecting the typical kids show, (or just any tv show for that matter), it blew my expectations right out of the water. Particularly with what you mention with Zuko’s character arc. I love the thought and care the writers put into him and the entire story.…[Read more]

This is an awesome idea! I’ve been in sort of a short story writing spree the past couple months so this is perfect. And doing this post Christmas is also a great idea to have something to look forward to, (and give us more time to write the short stories). XD

I love bullet journaling! I’ve been doing it for a couple of years now, and it’s the perfect mashup of both my love for organization and doodling! Plus, they’re super fun to look back on and remeber where you were years ago.
My favorite bullet journaling YouTuber is AmandaRachLee. She’s great if you want some bullet journal ideas…[Read more]

Exactly! I don’t just want to write entertaining stories, I want to write stories that last forever.
Haha, yes. I think we’ve all at some point wrote totally spontaneous stories and wrote whatever cool thing popped in our heads first. XD
But like you said, with structure the story ideas can be fully utilized to…[Read more]

How has your writing process changed since you first started?
For me, it’s the way I approach telling a story. When I first started writing the main thing I would think about is the plot and what would be the most interesting events for the story. Now, what I think before I start writing a story is, “Why am I writing this?” and “Why does this…[Read more]

The notebook switch you do with your friend is really cool. I’ve never thought of doing that before but I really want to try that now.
I can definitely relate to wanting to try EVERYTHING out. It sometimes feels like I gain a new hobby every week. XD
Scenes and characters from stories are my favorite thing to draw as well! Art…[Read more]

I use good ol’ google docs. Because of the simplicity and I can easily share docs with my siblings. But I’ve heard a lot of good things about Scrivener and been wanting to try it out for a while.

It’s really fun to see how each of us likes to describe our writing process. And although we each have our own unique spin on the three words, there’re also a lot of interesting similarities. As Gracie pointed out, we all tend to procrastinate, get distracted easily, be…[Read more]

I find curse words, jarring, unnecessary, and just brings down the overall enjoyment of the book. Like @jenwriter17 mentioned, I totally don’t mind a book saying “he cursed” especially if that particular character is the kind of person to do so, but I instantly get put off if there’s actual curse words in it. I’m not sure why, but all I…[Read more]

I’ve been hearing so much about that series!
What about them inspired you? The characters, the world, the theme, etc. I love hearing peoples thoughts and feeling about books.
Do you like the originals or the re-writes better? I’ve been wanting to read them, but I’m not sure which version to start with.

I’m in the middle many different WIP, so my brains telling me, “focus on finishing what you’ve started Kat” but then my heart is like, “Ey, it’s ’bout time we set off on the roaring seas! Join hands with MGPN!”
Well, a Pirate novel may or may not have started simmering in the back. And you’re right it does look like jolly fun. XD Oh,…[Read more]
