Im not saying that breaking rules are okay just that if you read books in that genre you should prepare for that kind of thing to show up

As a result, we don’t read much YA fiction! I’m concentrating on writing it instead. 🙂

One thing about writing style: sometimes using more descriptive words for “said” can be distracting and sound contrived.

I agree with @folith-feolin about how similar it sounds to Harry Potter. And the Elves are very similar to Tolkien’s. At least in the first book Messenger hints that it was on purpose, saying something like Tolkien had been allowed to visit or something and he used what he learned to write LOTR.
