Linyang Zhang replied to the topic Has a song ever inspired a story, scene, or character? in the forum Topic of the Week 2 years, 7 months ago
@kathleenramm Yes, definitely! There’s too many to count, haha. But a couple I can remember:
- Bird Song by Florence and the Machine
- Gasoline by Brand New, covered by Falling Up
- Daylight by Northern Abbey
I’ve tried starting some based off of them, but usually I just write down the ideas and keep it for later. Too many ideas, too little time.

Linyang Zhang replied to the topic How Do You Turn a Spark Into a Blaze? in the forum Plotting 2 years, 7 months ago
Ah yes, right on cue for me today, wanting to write a whole novel with nothing but an idea for the villain. I can feel the general vibe of the thing. I heard a song lyric today that I want to incorporate into the plot. I know nothing else.
I think generally I’ll feel for how long the work will be, like a short story, novella, or novel,…[Read more]

Has a song ever inspired a story, scene, or character?
This is something I’ve always wanted to do and also shocked that I haven’t done it yet as I pretty much listen to music 24/7.I think I have gotten quite a few ideas for characters, scenes, stories, and such from music, sometimes from the lyrics but often from the overall feeling the song g…[Read more]

A desk job has never seemed more enticing. I guess my dream of becoming a advertising street sign holder will have to die. Its a so sad, but I must do it for the arts…
But in any sense, thanks for the tips! I will definitely be using them.
As for your question about what rhymes with orange, it’s Sporange. An uncommon, but very real…[Read more]

Welcome back! It’s awesome to have you back!
I don’t know about you, but there is always this fresh sense of excitement when I get back into writing after a break.
Is there anything in particular you are excited about with getting back into writing?

Linyang Zhang replied to the topic Do your characters tend to be more extraverted or introverted? in the forum Topic of the Week 2 years, 7 months ago
@kathleenramm I feel like I usually plan for characters to be a little more reserved but they end up being more extraverted to keep the story moving along and the scene interesting, haha. I always need a bit more dialogue.

Do your characters tend to be more extraverted or introverted?
I’d like to say that I have a pretty good mix of both, as the contrast between characters adds nice dynamics, but after a little thought it might not be as equal as I thought. When I first started writing, most of my characters were more on the extraverted side, but since then it’s k…[Read more]

Kathleen replied to the topic What's Your Favorite Relationship Type in Fiction? in the forum Topic of the Week 2 years, 7 months ago
Woah. I thought I had written a lot of sibling relationships, but I can honestly say you’ve beaten me.
And yeah, two friends so close they could be brothers pretty much counts as brothers in my eyes.
Since you have written many brother relationships, have you written any sister relationships in your stories? And if you…[Read more]

How long have you been writing poetry for? Also, have any tips for a beginner? You know, asking for a friend lol.

Kathleen replied to the topic Find my characters Want/Goal in the forum Characters 2 years, 8 months ago
Well, one option would be that his goal is to confess to his crush or find a way for his crush to confess to him. Depending on what kind of guy he is.
Another option would be that his goal is to get away from his father. Whether that be earning enough money to buy a place away from his home, or to run away.
He could have both…[Read more]

@lydia-s Nice, nice! I’m quite in love with Steinbeck and Dostoyvesky, throw in some Ray Bradbury and Dickens here and there, and there are so many more titles I’ve been meaning to read. Your literature program sounds fun! I’ve been meaning to take one at some point, haha.

Kathleen replied to the topic Do you Prefer Classical or Modern Literature? in the forum Topic of the Week 2 years, 8 months ago
Yeah, Classic lit. feels so much more grounded. It also feels a bit more comfy and homey to read. I do really like fast paced books, but slow paced books like classics are so relaxing.
Do you have any favorite classics?

Linyang Zhang replied to the topic How do you draft/write the "first" document? in the forum General Writing Discussions 2 years, 8 months ago
@godlyfantasy12 Usually I write a beginning, and then I start working on an outline/plot/characters, and usually after I have the outline for all the chapters done, or most of them, enough to keep me busy for a while, I just starting writing each chapter one by one.

Linyang Zhang replied to the topic Do you Prefer Classical or Modern Literature? in the forum Topic of the Week 2 years, 8 months ago
@kathleenramm These days I can consume nothing but classic lit. I think when I was younger I found it boring but now I find modern lit lacking in depth and character and theme. Still, I prefer literature from the 1800’s and 1900’s, and maybe occasionally the 1700’s. Anything earlier I find, well, hard to read.

Do you Prefer Classical or Modern Literature?
Ask me this question a few years ago, I would have said modern literature without hesitation. However… recently I’ve been gravitating much more towards the classics.
I still think modern literature has some clear strengths over classical literature, like having fewer filler scenes and more creative…[Read more]
