@rochellaine, I knew they were similar, but not they were the same. I have to say, I was a bit confused when you said Ashley died in book 4 but I just translated it as journal four. (each part in Robot Wars is called Journal 1, 2,  3, etc.) But I guess for y’all it was actually book 4

For me, even just dancing and a kiss on the cheek was a lot when I first read them. I think if my brain had agreed that they were 17 and not 14 it wouldn’t have been so weird, but I just refused to believe it.

Yes, those scenes are great. I also like all the cryptic emails once Tyce and Rawling figure out what is going on.

I don’t know when they were written. But most future books are set hundreds of years in the future so they can do pretty much what they want. I think writing a book set in 100 years or less is very difficult if you’re shooting for realistic

@alia …friend she was talking about? Well, I don’t know what she said so it could be a different friend. But we have met in real life, if that is what you mean.

@catwing, She was saying that she convinced a friend to buy the Mars Diaries so I was wondering if it was you since the two of you had met before

@catwing, you should, though I’m afraid that now you have a few spoilers

@rochellaine @alia Well I’m working on developing my characters’ arches/slopes do you have any tips from when you do that? Or do you not do character arches/slopes?

@alia Yeah, I never had any trouble seeing them grow up.  It was only three years, and that’s not as much as Bree, Devin and Mikkel grow up in Lois Walfrid Johnson’s Viking Quest series (ever read those?) which is also only five books long.  I understand that it wouldn’t be great if you can’t see them as older than 14.  We have another series where the girl is twelve, and she’s talking about what kind of guy she wants to get married to, with a guy who’s basically her boyfriend, and that’s really weird.  I kind of try and transpose it in my head so that my brain thinks she’s fifteen, and then it’s not so bad.  Though fifteen is pretty young, too. 😉

Okay, I just found them and checked the copyright dates and I was only a tiny bit off.  They were written from 2000 to 2002.  So yeah, they were set, for the author, about 40 years in the future.

No, @catwing isn’t the friend I was talking about.  It’s someone else.  I haven’t seen Catwing in over three years, since we haven’t been to her homeschool conference in that long.  The other friend goes to a conference we go to every year.  I hope we do get to go to Catwing’s conference soon again. 🙂

@catwing, sorry, I’m not to good with writing terms. Could you explain?

@rochellaine, I don’t know why I couldn’t see them as older. My brain is really weird sometimes. No I haven’t read those. I’ll have to look into them.

@alia Okay. Basically a character arch is how your character changes through the book. So I’m trying to figure out what some of my characters faults that can change or need to change. But one of them progresses negatively so I’m calling hers a slope. 😛
Just trying to put down on paper some things… 🙂
Make sense? So I’m asking if you have any brainstorming ideas for when you do that (if you do.) or such.

@catwing That’s something I’m not very good at myself, since I had several people tell me one of the guys in my last book had a really quick change of opinion which should have been explained better.  That was two years ago, though, and I think I’ve gotten better, but I can’t tell yet since I haven’t finished a book yet.

However, I would assume you should plan where your character starts, and where he’s supposed to end, and then think of why and how he should get to the end.

…and that’s like really horrible advice, I think, and probably doesn’t help at all, but it’s the best I can do. 😛

You should probably ask @seekjustice.  She knows more about writing theory, I think.
