@valtmy Yeah, sorry, I really haven’t been on top of my beta work for a while.ย  SeekJustice sent me her part three several days ago, and I haven’t even read half of it, while I usually read her stuff straight through day of or next day.ย  And I didn’t get to Jen’s book until a couple of weeks after she finished it, I think.

So, if I don’t get to it soon, please remind me again!

You aren’t alone in thinking that ๐Ÿ˜€ The June Rebellion, which was what it was called, happened in 1832 and it was mostly led by students. See, after the French Revolution, the monarch eventually was restored to the throne and things got even worse from then on (for the poor at least. For everyone else, things were dandy) and there were two small rebellions one in July 1830 and one in June 1832, which is the one the revolution part of Les Mis is set in.

Well, I found a way to get around it. I just couldn’t believe no one had pointed it out at all.

I’m very wary of large age gaps in marriages. I don’t know why, but it freaks me out if its more than two or three years, at least when they’re young people. Fortunately, in my reread of Les Mis, I discovered that Enjolras is only twenty, so I lowered Justice’s age from twenty-four to twenty.

I think the reason that disturbed me so much was that I’m seventeen and I know a guy who’s twenty-four, married with two kids. That’s way too much of an age gap in my mind. Chessy’s still a minor.

@seekjustice Well, since I’ve never read Les Mis fully, I guess I didn’t notice the time period much.ย  I probably would be able to tell if I read it in-depth, since, as you say of yourself, I am also a history nerd. ๐Ÿ˜›ย  Okay, so this is after Napoleon, right?ย  I actually don’t know much about Napoleon, either, except as he has to do with the Haitian revolution.ย  Have you heard much about the Haitian revolution?

You’re not the only person with that opinion.ย  And in some cases I would agree.ย  I just think it completely depends on the circumstances.ย  Sometimes a twenty-year-old guy can be way more mature than a thirty-year-old guy, as Enjolras was, according to how you describe him.ย  And sometimes a girl can be mature enough to get married at seventeen, and some girls aren’t mature enough until they’re in their late twenties…and some never.

A lot of it has to do with culture and customs.ย  If you think about it, Mary (mother of Jesus) was probably about fifteen or sixteen years old.ย  ย And Laura Ingalls was seventeen when she got married.ย  But it would be very hard for me to believe there was a modern fifteen-year-old girl who was actually mature enough to get married, and it would probably freak me out.ย  And that’s just because we don’t teach girls the same way they were taught in previous time periods, and they are expected to stay young longer.ย  By the 1900s girls were expected to usually wait to get married until around 20 or 21, and since then it’s been going up and up until now most women don’t get married until they’re well into their thirties!ย  But I think it’s just different for every girl, and depends a lot on what her parents/guardians teach her.

              @rochellaine

Yep, its after Napoleon was exiled and Louis XVII (maybe? there’s so many Louises I get them mixed up) is on the throne. No, I’ve never heard of the Haitian revolution.

I don’t necessarily mind people getting marriedย young, say if the girl was seventeen and the guy eighteen or nineteen, and I don’t necessarily have a problem with the Biblical customs of girls being married at fifteen or sixteen, like Mary (though younger than that I think it just wrong. Besides, girls bodies aren’t made to safely carry and bear children until sixteen/seventeen/eighteen). I just don’t like it when there’s a massive age gap, though I think there’s a point where age doesn’t matter as much (like thirty and forty, for example. There’s still a ten year age gap, but I don’t think it matters as much as, say, seventeen and twenty-seven, since there’s a huge difference between the maturity of those two ages).

I feel like I’ll be one of those people never mature enough for marriage ๐Ÿ˜›

@seekjustice The Haitian revolution is very horrible and very interesting.ย  It has many similarities to the French revolution.ย  I first heard about it in a G.A.Henty book.ย  (Have you heard of Henty?ย  He’s extremely popular as a historical author among U.S. homeschoolers)ย  I later watched a movie about it, and absolutely loved it.ย  (It didn’t hurt that my favorite actor starred… ๐Ÿ˜› )

@seekjustice I was just reading where Chessy disapproves of Justice’s methods of trickery and bribery, but for some reason doesn’t disapprove of his plan to kill people… ๐Ÿ˜› Yeah, I know that’s not really what’s going on, but it just reminded me of this:

Sorry, I just had to save my brother from the tyrannical rule of the Shetland ponies and then he fell off his bike and I had to deal with that as well ๐Ÿ˜€

I have heard of Henty. I’m pretty sure I have one of his books as well, but I haven’t read it. Oh, who’s your favourite actor?

My littlest brother was just demonstrating his use of bicycle brakes and showing off. Of course, I pretended to be all excited about his remarkable abilities.

Me: Whoa, you can use your brakes, Josh!

Him: No, I was not using my brakes.

Me: Oh, did you stop using your strong imagination?

Him: No, I used my back brakes.

                      Me: That’s what I said.

Him *looking very wise and grave*: No. In Australia we call them back brakes.

@seekjustice “tyrannical rule of the Shetland ponies?” Haha!ย  Sounds intriguing.ย  In what manner, exactly, are ponies tyrannical?

Which book do you have?ย  Oh, well, the one I was referring to is Dale Robertson.ย  He’s not far above a lot of other favorite actors I have, but he’s the one I’ve “picked” to be at the top of the list right now. ๐Ÿ˜›ย  This is only including non-musical actors.ย  He does sing, but he doesn’t do musical films, so I don’t compare him with my favorite actor/singers.

It’s okay that you disappeared, because I got distracted rewatching Lydia Bailey (1952), the movie I mentioned, on YouTube. ๐Ÿ˜›ย  I think you might like it, actually.ย  It’s very good.

Oh yes, that’s from the Princess Bride. ๐Ÿ˜€ย  Possibly the best movie ever, right?

Hahahaha!ย  I love conversations with young kids!ย  They have absolutely no idea how hilarious they are.

In no particular way, one of them is pretty old. But Josh decided he was terrified of them and couldn’t ride until they were all gone. Apparently, in his eyes they are monsters who might eat him.

I’d have to check, but I believe its one on Sir Francis Drake, but I could be wrong. We could have a few actually.

                          What’sย Lydia Baileyย about?

I’ve only seen it once or twice and I remember enjoying it, but I tend to like more serious things ๐Ÿ˜€ It does have some hilarious quotes though, which we were quoting before we even knew where they came from.

I know! Now he’s going around saying, “Watch this! But this is not the best part….”

@seekjustice Ah, I see. ๐Ÿ™‚ย  Irrational fears always seem to be the worst.

It’s been a while since I read most of Henty’s books (we have the full collection, or possibly minus one or two) and I don’t remember that one well.ย  I think it wasn’t one of my favorites.ย  I have three favorites, and one of those three was the one on the French Revolution. ๐Ÿ˜€ย  In the Reign of Terror, I believe it’s called.ย  The Haitian revolution book is called A Roving Commission.

Lydia Bailey is about an American lawyer to travels to Haiti during the war between the Haitians and the French to get the signature of Lydia Bailey on a legal document since her father died and they’re settling his estate.ย  The rumblings of war turn into a full fight and he is trapped in Haiti, because even though he’s an American and not French, he’s a white man, and so is in danger for his life.ย  Eventually…oh, I don’t want to tell you because I’m afraid I’ll give too much away in case you end up watching it sometime.ย  But it’s an action/drama period film.ย  They have title cards throughout that explain the historical events depicted.ย  Anyway, you could always look up the synopsis if you want. ๐Ÿ˜‰

I’ll have to think of some of my little sisters’ quotes to tell you. ๐Ÿ˜›ย  But there’s something else I found today that reminded me of you.ย  Some undereducated American (there are a lot of those) found out that China is twelve hours ahead of us.ย  Her response?ย  She complained that they must be horrible people because they should have warned us about 9/11 before it happened instead of letting all those people die!

That’s not exactly how time zones work, but we do call you a time traveller.ย  So next time something bad happens, I guess we’ll just have to blame you for not warning us, huh? ๐Ÿ˜›

Well, I’ll have to put them on my list to read (as if that list wasn’t long enough already ๐Ÿ˜› ).

Sounds interesting, I’ll have to look into that one as well!

Oh my word. Are there really people that…uneducated? Unfortunately, I can’t stop snickering about that now. And Australia’s something like 16 hours in front of you, so we’re even worse than the Chinese. ๐Ÿ˜›

@seekjustice The long list of books to read… *shakes head* I know exactly what you mean.

Yes, so if something happens, you should have plenty of time to warn us.ย  Can I trust you to do so? ๐Ÿ˜›
