      @seekjustice, good job Zac!

      honestly, sometimes being a writer is hard because in order for us to write something like flirting well, we actually have to go and do it ourselves, which just ends up being awkward

        I know right? on the rare occasions I do talk to a young man of a similar age to myself, I’ll say something and then internally go “Oh wait, was that flirting?? If so, I should probably stop because I’m terrible at it and this is super awkward…”

          @seekjustice, right? most of my friends are guys, and according to my two gal friends most of the time I talk to a guy is considered flirting by society, but for the life of me I can’t see where the friendly conversation ends and the flirtation begins.

            I guess I can accept that but I would really like for the reason why these people are following this fellow who is clearly less wise than them to be explained in the story. Maybe when Jonas and Chessy are talking after he asks her whether she likes Justice, Jonas can mention that.

            Speaking of characters that are bad at flirting… you wouldn’t want to see how one of mine does it. Though I haven’t actually written that part yet 😛

              My predicament exactly. Except that I don’t have a lot of guy friends, so the guys I talk to tend to be casual acquaintances from youth group or friends of friends, which makes it even more awkward. when I talk to people I tend to tease them a lot, which is fine for girl friends, but as soon as its a guy then apparently you’re flirting with them…

              Someone help me.

              Also, I’m sure guys flirt with me sometimes, and then my reaction is usually similar to Justice’s.

              The unfairness of writing is that I can write psychopathic murderers, depressed and anxious, suicidal people…and then can’t even write a little simple flirtation.

                @seekjustice @alia Oh, this is hilarious. 😛

                By the way, my go-to for flirting examples is always the Patty Fairfield series by Carolyn Wells.  Wells writes flirtation so well!!  Should I post an example for you? (by the way, I’ve never written flirting, so my plans for writing it are all theoretical. 😉 )

                I just got distracted reading all our old comments on the Stars Fill Infinity topic.  And guess what, SeekJustice??  I found a post in which you stated you were planning to try and convince me that Chessy and Justice should be a couple!!  https://kingdompen.org/forums/topic/stars-fill-infinity/page/6/#post-69868

                  @valtmy, yeah, my characters are never going to flirt. Probably the main reason is that I am going to try and not write in romance *glares at two characters in book 2 of a series I have just started*.

                  @seekjustice
                  , I’m pretty sure the same thing happens to me, however I can’t write about it because I’m not informed until later where the conversation is no longer up front in my head

                  why is it so easy to write psychopathic murderers, depressed and anxious, suicidal people but not flirtatious people????? you would think that would be easier.

                  @rochellaine
                  , but is that a complete romance series? Because those aren’t really books that I pick up and read very often.

                  Did you actually go searching for proof that she had tried to convince you?

                        @alia
                        I wouldn’t say they’re a full romance series.  The first two books have absolutely no romance in them at all, since the series starts when she’s 14 and the series ends seventeen books later when she’s married with a baby.  I would call it a historical fiction series about the life of a girl growing up in in the lower upper class.  She’s a social butterfly, goes to dances and parties, and flirts with a lot of men, but I don’t find it annoying like I usually do when there’s a character who flirts all the time, simply because Patty is so sweet, and a great character, not the normal flirtatious girl.  Another reason why it doesn’t seem like a romance series even though it’s full of romantic stuff is because she meets the guy she’s going to marry, and it’s pretty obvious they’re going to end up together, but he only shows up for a few pages in each book, and some books he doesn’t show up at all, until the last three or four books where they’re finally together.  I like them much better than modern romance series (they were written back in 1907-1918 I think) because modern romances have so much touchy stuff like kissing and serious dating with people who are not going to get married, while Patty is very careful not to be caught in a situation where she’s alone with a man, and she doesn’t let anyone kiss her until she’s engaged, getting mad when a couple of the men try to.

                        Aaand, you asked, so you got the rant. 😛  I could go on and on about those books!  Anyway, I would love if more people read those books, but if you don’t like romance it’s perfectly fine.  I was just referring to them as perfect examples of flirting.

                        Goodnight!  Talk to you later.

                          @rochellaine

                          Is it true that in America you guys have breakfast pizza??? If so, my whole view of American society has been changed for the better.

                          Oh yes, the average modern romance, even the Christian ones, tend to be….sketchy.

                          Its all right, I love listening to rants. Even though the rant wasn’t directed at me, and it was about a romance novel. 😛

                            @seekjustice  I would be surprised if we didn’t have breakfast pizza.  I don’t recall hearing of it before, though.  The thing is, America is a blending of such diverse cultures that we have many different types and versions of foods for all the different meals and snacks.  Sure, people will give you main foods that are popular among Americans, but with individual families the diet varies greatly.

                            I think nearly everything has a breakfast version of it, however. 😛

                            Well, at least I don’t just like romance.  I like good romance.  You might remember me complaining about how awful the Laura-Almanzo romance is in the LHOTP tv series, but that I loved it in the books.  Actually, recently I’ve been thinking of basing a character on the real Laura Ingalls.  Her character is extremely interesting in the books, and her behavior patterns are so different from the average modern his-fic heroine.  I really hate how they put modern heroines in old time periods and clothing and just expect us to believe that’s what women were like back then!  Girls just aren’t taught to behave the same as they were back then, and whether you think that’s good or bad, if you’re writing historical fiction it should have some resemblance to history!  That’s why I prefer to read books that were actually written in the period, because I can get a true idea of the culture, rather than some author’s idea of “oh, I wonder what it would be like if we didn’t have telephones?  Let me put a modern heroine back in the 1780s and see what she does!  She’ll act just like I would if I didn’t have a telephone, and she’ll rebel against wearing skirts and want to ride astride, and her father and brothers will tell her she can’t have an opinion because she’s a girl even though if I did a little more research I’d find out that women like Abigail Adams had huge influences on their husbands politics…”

                            Ah…there.  I’m glad you said you like rants, because I accidentally went off on one again… 😛 😛

                              @rochellaine

                              My family and I were just discussing we have inhibiting societal rules like not eating pizza for breakfast and Mum said they probably had breakfast pizza in America, so I thought I’d asked.

                              A character based on the real Laura Ingalls would be really cool! And that’s a massive pet peeve of mine as well. Girls actually were different back then, why can’t you just understand that??? Why does everyone have to be modern? I don’t understand!

                              And there were some absolutely amazing women around back then, you didn’t have to be “rebellious” to make an impact.

                                @seekjustice I just looked it up, and then remembered that I have had pizza with eggs on it before, but for dinner at a nice restaurant.  Apparently you can eat that for breakfast too.  Another very popular switch-up here is people very often have what we call “breakfast for dinner,” meaning you eat waffles or pancakes for dinner instead of breakfast.  That’s usually when you’re having a late dinner at eight o’clock or so, but it can be earlier.  Do you ever do that in Australia?

                                She is a very interesting character.  She seems so dispassionate when she stiffly tells Almanzo “you may kiss me goodnight” after they get engaged, but she writes the crazy poem making fun of Eliza Jane, and in another instance she defends her sister Carrie by wildly rocking the desk when Eliza Jane was persecuting her.  She’s almost a confusing character, but so different from the standard his-fic heroine.  Probably because she’s real. 😀

                                Yes!  They can’t seem to understand that not every girl used to lament her lot with every step she took!  They simply think “what would I do if I were in this situation,” rather than “what would a girl raised and taught to deal with situations like this do in this situation.” 😛  Big difference there…

                                  @rochellaine

                                  I’m pretty sure I’ve had pizza with eggs on it too, but I’m not sure. I don’t know if a lot of people do it, but our family used to have a pancakes and icecream for dinner night once in a blue moon.

                                  Maybe she just wasn’t as much into romance? I don’t remember her being as much of a romantic, but its been years since I read the books. But she definitely does seem like the sort of person who would get passionate over her sister.

                                  A massive difference 😛 But I don’t even think that’s the only reason. I think modern feminism has convinced everyone that life was horrible for women back then and that to have a “passive” (I use that term just to refer to a woman who’s perceived as passive, not necessarily that they are passive) woman must be sexist or something. Its all rather silly in my opinion.
