        Soldier

        This was all very confusing.

So he was a demon? Then he wasn’t? Then he WAS again??

He didn’t look like one (not that I know what they look like. But it’s not that). He looked like a Changeling, a little bit, but he wasn’t THAT either!

Gabriel didn’t take the words nicely. I wouldn’t either.

Huntress and Sniper hung back, a bit shocked by the words, not speaking. I flapped around the sad little group, thinking of something interesting to say.

Unfortunately I came up with nothing and settled for preening my feathers instead.

          Mel

Mel was fast asleep by now. Unaware of any conflict, she dreamed faintly of chasing rabbits in and out of tunnels and doors while wearing a light blue dress. As she dreamed, her foot twitched. The scraggly bouquet of flowers slipped out her limp hand.

            Gabriel

Gabriel pulled up his mask over his face, pulling the scarlet ribbon tight. The screeching had stopped, leaving behind a ringing in his ears and beyond that, silence. Gabriel couldn’t remember a time where he had heard no background noise in his life before. He couldn’t hear Lucy, all he could see was her mouth open, and a strange expression. Was she laughing at him now? Why he didn’t know, neither did he understand why he couldn’t hear any of her laughter.

There was nothing he could say in his defense now, and he was sure in his mind that the only one in the room that wasn’t wary of him now was Mel, passed out so deeply as she was on the soft rug.

Now, more than ever, Gabriel wished he was never taken to this hell, he wished to be where the dangers ahead were foreseeable, not overtaken by fog, and where he didn’t grow attachments to people who would then turn around to say those words he hated most. He wished he had never met Lucy.

I read that last sentence and I regret all my choices to emotionally torture this poor fellow

                Lucille

Lucy looked at the fist mark once more and let out a shuddery sigh. She let go of her sleeves, which she had been fidgeting with, and bolted forward.

As Gabriel’s hands lowered from tying the ribbon, she reached him and wrapped her arms around his torso. She hugged as tightly as she could.

This was someone who deserved it, even if he didn’t know what this meant to her yet. He deserved someone to see this room and still hold him.  She closed her eyes and buried her head in the hug, messing up her short, fluffy hair.

                That’s what he was like… That’s what he was like… That’s what he…

Lucy locked her wrists together behind his back for extra strength, so he couldn’t pull away.

Honestly, Gabriel needs to work through those emotions. In his actual story (as far as I’m plotting it as of now) his emotions and people’s accusations leads to a bit of a negative story arc for him.

                    Gabriel

As Lucy’s arms wrapped around him, a sharp inhale followed. What was this for? Hugs were things of endearment, things of attachment and comfort. Why would Lucy hug him now? Why after he had accepted he was a demon? Did she not care? That was foolishness. She saw the handprint in the wood, the proof that his strength was inhuman. But it wasn’t unlike Lucy to do strange and rash things. Maybe she really didn’t care.

He let out the breath, hesitantly returning the hug. He didn’t remove his mask, and still his muscles were coiled in maybe anticipation for this moment to end and turn into another knife in his heart.

                      Acharis

Acharis stared at the image projected in the basin. The land continued for miles in every direction with no end in sight, and it was filled with pointless corridors of stone and shrub, mostly leading to nowhere. The island appeared to be even larger than the Sho-lin mainland, which meant it was one of the largest pieces of land in the world. It could support hundreds of thousands of people, and instead someone had decided to use it for some useless architecture project (he still wasn’t sure what the function of this ‘labyrinth’ was).

It was such an egregious waste it bordered on horrific.

It was also impossible that such a place could exist. It would have been discovered long ago. There likely would have been multiple wars fought over it. A thought from earlier returned to him.

“Am I dead?” Acharis asked, not looking up from the image. The idea made even more sense than before. Strange creatures, living statues, and disgusting wastes of land did not exist in the living world. So, either he was dead or he had finally gone mad like his brother always claimed he would.

                      ***

I didn’t mention this earlier cause I didn’t think it would make a difference but turns out I’ve had a hard time not mentioning it in RPs. Acharis’ people live on floating islands, which is why he doesn’t know what a labyrinth is and is and is horrified at what he sees as a waste of space.

                          Lucille

Gabriel didn’t say anything. Lucy didn’t expect him to. The feelings tumbling around were enough to confuse anyone, most of all herself.

                          So she hugged him tighter.

Another door blossomed out of the wall behind Gabriel’s back. A worn brass knob was attached to it, and faded yellow paint covered the birch panels.

                          It was Lucy’s bedroom door.

That was unsurprising. She steeled herself for what she had to do – because this was the only thing to do.

She gave Gabriel a look before she took his hand, led him to the door, and pushed it open. They walked from one room to the next.

Golden light flooded their faces. The labyrinth enchantment was so strong, it was like stepping into another place on the opposite side of the world.

It felt like Lucy had never left. But it also felt like she hadn’t been there in years.

Simple and a little cramped, the bedroom looked as if it had been pulled straight from the apartments. Striped wallpaper covered the walls, and a bed lay beneath the window in an alcove, directly across from the door.

The room began to shake, the window rattling, and the unmistakable sound of a train hurtled past. A clothing hanger rattled on the wall, hanging by a spare nail, and a school uniform hung there. The collar flapped loosely; someone had ripped the fabric down the front.

Model cars, trains, and bits of scrap metal lay strewn across the floor. The signs of a kid playing and leaving a mess.

A person might think it was a normal mess. But they only had to look closer to know this was a frantic outburst.

The metal pieces were twisted and broken apart. A smashed lamp lay under the desk. The desk chair was on its side, the legs sticking out like a helpless animal in need of rescue.

“I didn’t clean up last time I was here,” Lucy murmured.

She stood frozen among the broken objects. At last, she began picking them up mechanically, sliding them onto shelves in her closet.

The closet’s back wall was riddled with holes. Some of the dents had streaks of dried blood.

Lucy hung her head and let the closet door swing open, so the other adventurers could see the damage.

Sometimes Lucy’s mind hurt in a strange way. Every sound and sight shocked her more than a roaring crowd, scraping into her eyes and ears. Her skin prickled, her school uniform constricted her, and when anyone touched her, she wanted to scream.

Some days she came home and felt fine. But on others, she couldn’t stand another moment of acting.

Why didn’t the other children feel like she did?

Why couldn’t they feel the noises, the bright lights flashing, and the sudden cold sweat of writhing inside your own clothes?

In those moments, the only thing that brought relief was to take control of her own room. Run in, scream at her parents to leave her alone. Slam the door behind her and become nothing but an explosive force.

This man Lucy had met, the Protector, who looked like so many of the young factory workers at home – he knew what it was like to hit something because he had to.

Everyone thought he couldn’t control himself. They thought something was wrong with him.

But somehow, he grew up to be a good person.

Lucy stood in the middle of her room, on the threadbare rug. She had opened herself up to be scrutinized. She fidgeted with her shirt, eyes roaming randomly around the room.

“Sometimes you wonder… what’ve you done? And it’s hard for you to be good without h..hurting inside your head, and hurting my… hm. Yourself.”

The words came out in jolted bursts.

“But you really are a hero. You can be one even – even if you used to make your mom and dad cry?”
