Just saw the second drawing and I love it. Totally want to read that scene

January 13, 2024 at 3:22 pm #173076not necessarily, they weren’t meant to be any sort of person in particular beyond accidentally reminding me of the elf versions of two old oc’s who’s story will not see the light of day lol (at least not in it’s current form), and both being revered guardians of different times of day.
I totally get that! if you want your character’s overalls to look more sci-fi, I recommend looking up sci-fi fashion inspo (caution, there might be revealing clothes, especially on women, but I have never run into full nudity) for inspiriation. Also, looking up industrial clothes might help you too, like coveralls.

January 13, 2024 at 8:36 pm #173086It’s ok! I’m still learning too, and here’s some of my limited knowledge:
For the glowy lights, I use a layer-type called color dodge, for a really colorful light, I use overlay, and multiply for shadows.
I used an airbrush for the more blended light like sunrays and such, and used a textured blender where I wanted texture, and a blur blender where I wanted smoothness.
And at least on my software (Krita), you can right click a layer, select add, then you can play around with different filters over that layer, I used gaussian blur on the back, and some motion blur angled upward for the nigh time one.
There also should be different texture brushes you can use in your program, for the night elf I used a star texture that just scattered dots around, and a splatter on a low opacity for the day elf’s skin to give it some texture and to make him slightly sunburnt (even though it’s not super visible in the final image), and I used watercolor brushes for clouds.
Also, for the day elf, I pulled my color palette from a reference image of a sunset I found off of Pinterest (seriously, this is a great place to get good references from), since I wasn’t sure how I wanted the colors to behave, only knowing the elf had to be a redhead with blue ribbon and white clothes.
And also, I never outgrew my elf-adoring phase that occurred once I saw the Hobbit movies and wanted to marry Legolas, so I drew elves… a lot… 🤣.

January 13, 2024 at 8:42 pm #173087I guess all that to say, don’t worry about skill level, that’s what practice is for! I wound up drawing elves a lot — especially warrior princesses, horses, and centaurs — so I got fairly good at those, and only recently have my drawings of men not hit the uncanny valley lol. Just keep drawing, using reference often, and you’ll get the hang of it!

January 14, 2024 at 3:06 pm #173099@scoutfinch180 thanks for the advice!
Uncanny valley…..yeah, plenty of my drawings have gone there. Since I mostly draw fan art, I can tell when I got a character so wrong it’s not even funny.
and LOL about the marrying Legolas part. Y’know, I’ve never found him hyper-attractive. Like, he’s the kinda guy that I can think “Wow, the female elves must find him really good-looking” but he’s never been the swoon-worthy one for me. That prize……That prize goes to animated characters more often than live-action ones, actually…….mostly because of the Star Wars TV shows……
Why am I willing to spill my darkest secret to everyone on the internet?"When in doubt, eat cheese crackers."-me to my charries who don't even know about cheese crackers
January 14, 2024 at 3:09 pm #173100It’s weird, because it’s less of an “Oh, I’d marry this character if I could” kind of a thing, and more of a just “Wow. He’s awesome.” kind of a thing. I’m strange like that, idk.
