Mallory O'Bier replied to the topic What is your least favorite type of hero? in the forum Topic of the Week 5 years, 5 months ago
I think my least favorite type of hero is the chosen one. It’s pretty overdone, and at times so cliche. I don’t hate it, though.
Also, the Mary Sue hero, because it’s just really hard to relate to and like a hero that is overpowered through basically no effort of their own, always gets stronger right when they need to, and never seems to actually…[Read more]

Mallory O'Bier replied to the topic Which one of your characters would you most likely be friends with and why? in the forum Topic of the Week 5 years, 11 months ago
In my current WIP? I can imagine being friends with at least two of my characters… possibly six of them. Maybe more. I can think of at least one I wouldn’t be friends with at all. Their personality does not mesh well with mine.
But two of them for sure. I could be best friends with at least one. 🙂

I LOVE making cultures. 🙂 My strategy is to mash up various characteristics of real-world cultures to make something unique. Although each culture has a specific aesthetic that I shoot for. For example, I might have a Medieval European aesthetic, but incorporate cultural elements/traditions from feudal Japan.
As a cold-blooded…[Read more]

Corissa Maiden of Praise replied to the topic TOTW – What's Your Favorite Type of Scene in Stories? in the forum Start HERE 6 years, 4 months ago
To read: Plot twist!!! Though I also love a good dialogue or description. And suspense in a story will definitely keep me reading, especially if I’m trying to figure things out along with the main character rather than knowing what’s going on and simply pleading with the main character to FIGURE IT OUT ALREADY. XD
To write: I enjoy…[Read more]

Mallory O'Bier replied to the topic TOPIC OF THE WEEK – Who is the best villain in any book/movie of all time? in the forum Start HERE 6 years, 5 months ago
Count Olaf is a pretty good villain, @erinramm. I liked him from the Netflix series.
I never really gave it much thought, but I guess I prefer the Moriarty from the books. The one from the series was alright, but I don’t even remember the one from the movies. He must not have been particularly memorable.
Honestly, I think I like the idea of…[Read more]

Thanks, @kathleenramm. 🙂
I have seen those movies, @leon-fleming, although I wasn’t thinking of them in particular when I referred to Moriarty. I was thinking of the books.
I saw the last two Disney Star Wars movies unfortunately. I skipped the most recent one. I’m not a Disney Star Wars fan. The writing is just terrible (and there’s no excuse…[Read more]

Being able to freak out an entire world of characters without ever actually being in the room? Maybe Sauron is the greatest villain of all time.
Darth Vader. Why did I not think of him before? Most iconic, in my book. He is also a good candidate.

@leon-fleming mentioned Sauron. I would say that Sauron is a brilliant example of a villain who distances himself physically from the story but is still very active within it. I often find myself marveling at this.
He acts through his minions, somehow escaping a passive role in the story despite the lack of physical presence.
Although… I guess…[Read more]

My favorite villain is probably Sydney Carton, but I’m not sure if he counts exactly.
And the six-fingered man.
Hmm… honestly the first one I thought of was Loki, but again, he’s a wishy-washy sort of villain overall. He lacks conviction.
Moriarty! Smaug! I like them too.
Mother Gothel… she was really good, I thought.
Captain Hook! Now…[Read more]

Welcome to the family! Worldbuilding is always a favorite topic. I have created some languages here and there, but I’m not a linguist at all. I often create a language based off a certain “sound” I want.
Do you like creating cultures? And do you base them partly off real world cultures?

Hey hey @Dekreel! It’s okay. XD Sweet! That’s really cool. A couple of my siblings are into digital art things, and don’t much know how it works because I can’t draw much of anything, but it looks fun if you can! ;D

(Of course, not that the world isn’t problem-riddled now, but y’know, epic wars and stuff. XD Anne of Green Gables is a bit more of a wise choice for living-in in that department. :’D)

Heyyy @Dekreel!I’m well, how are you? What kind of art are you into? I know you used to do some manga-style stuff… (I think…) What’s your favorite kind to do?
@Hannah-C Thanks for the enthusiasm! ;D HA, well I’ll admit, that does lend itself to one being legitimately allowed to tell people when they’re wrong. XD XD Heheh. :’D
